I was so mesmerized, it took me several times to notice that Jukka was close to collapsing over the drums, but he kept on. That is what I call a deviation. But I would not be so harsh about her changing clothes - after all, it was a pause that should have made her less capricious. Though, interesting, what would have happened, if they had parted their ways earlier.

The original Queen, face and voice of Nighwish, when it was magical, majestic with class, unique rich voice with high quality and power. If it wasn't for Tarja's voice there wouldn't have been a Nightwish nor other singers for many that know the history of this band. All the popular songs everyone loves were written in Tarja's era for her voice and are the originals, later on they were reconstructed to fit other singers voices and not the originals. You don't get songs written now as when they were written in Tarja's era. Originals will remain Legends always and forever. Thank you for reacting to Tarja and for us fans who were listening to this band from the beginning. Tarja and Marko are legends with Legendary voices when combined, it's a powerhouse, the best era. This was Nightwish's last concert with Tarja, in 2005. The concert was recorded on DVD under the name "End Of An Era". With certainty, the artistic performance that all the members of the band achieved in this concert is unique, but the "rift" between Tarja and the rest of the band was already deep, after dissensions accumulated over the years. I think you already understand the context that generated "The Poet And The Pendulum", and I think it would be interesting to see some of their documentaries.

Tarja and Marko really brought that gothic energy to the band, I love this era! Notice how Tarja's vibrato in the last section matches the exact beat of Jukka's drums? Amazing amazing 🙏🏽❣ I know especially newer fans love the newer era the most, which i get, but the previous two eras were fantastic as well and Tarja, Tuomas and Emppu made Nightwish, they built the foundations and launched it into success within just a few years ❣

Then came all of the fuss in media. If you want to hear more Nightwish with Tarja, I suggest her version of "Ghost Love Score", "Sleeping Sun", or "Nemo".She is still the mother of symphonic metal. Good reaction.

This concert was in 2005. And the bond you saw between her and the band was already broken at this point - she was fired right after the concert. Jukka hunkering over the drums or the tears in Emppus face (at 4:43) might be related to that. Everyone except her knew that it was the last performance together.

Tarja's (tar-ya, with rolling r) voice inspired Tuomas to write the way he does. Nightwish was supposed to be an acoustic band until Tarja opened her mouth. Those long, soaring, dark operatic vocals over the symphonic sounds and metal band was so unique and nothing like we ever heard before. Female vocalists in metal were rare, and something like this didn't really exist elsewhere. If you check out Swanheart from From Wishes To Eternity concert, you'll see baby Nightwish from 24 years ago. Even Marko has not joined the band yet. I and so many others my age grew up to adulthood listening to Tarja's voice and when she was kicked out so many of us were completely devastated, also about the way it was done, which was a bad call from the band. It was such a big deal that even the prime minister of Finland gave comments about it. The whole mess was all over the press. People thought the band was finished, because nobody could replace Tarja. It was a big deal. I'm happy how everything turned out in the end though but it's been a rollercoaster.

They built their sound and style essentially around Tarja and her voice. So the Nightwish Floor inherited was Tarja's Night wish. I'm convinced that if they didn't build from the beginning with Tarja, there wouldn't be the Nightwish everyone has come to know and love. Because they were originally going to be a folk metal band, which probably would have been quality anyway given their talent, but it would not be the more Gothic symphonic metal they became.

Nope, not metal. In the summer of 1996, Tuomas was sitting around a campfire with friends and he wanted to capture the atmosphere in "acoustic campfire music". In the autumn, he brought Empuu along and they recorded the first demos. The two were not happy with the result and brought Tarja in. Her voice then exploded the concept and the Nightwish sound was born.

Actually you have that partly right, Tuomas writes songs for the singer whoever that singer might be, Tarja Anette Marco Troy or Floor... He states this in almost every interview The only reason he built the original around Tarja is because she was the singer at the time.. and also back in the day Marco sang all the gritty parts that Tarja couldn't (in any song) but Floor sings all of it now because Tarja can't with her style of voice, her deep accent and her strong vibrato. But she still got a tremendous voice regardless!

@@myspacewolfThey turned into a metal band because Tarja’s voice was too big for acoustic folk music. If they would have started with Floor, or anyone else, they would have stayed an acoustic folk band. Marko wasn’t even in the original line up, so a Toumas sang on the first album. Tapio Wilska was on the next two albums. Marko didn’t join the band until their fourth album. Toumas always wanted a male vocalist. Hence, that’s why Troy is still singing on the albums even though Marko’s gone.

Age catches up with us all (I'm a prime example), but Tarja has arguably done better than most. And her voice still carries that power. Tarja's versions of Nemo and I Wish I had an angel should be must views. (the non-live versions are a bit dated, but still an important part in understanding how the band was being positioned. It is just a crime that they did not get US airplay back then (and now as well, dammit).

Floor and Henk Poort's version at Beste Zangers (2019 Dutch TV show) is well worth a watch. It's not "Nightwish", just the two of them with a house band (Henk Port is a well known Dutch opera/musicals singer). Both Floor and Henk do solo songs on that show which you might also want to check out. It was so well received that Nightwish reprised the song in 2022 with Henk as guest singer. Floor's solo shows have featured it too, again with Henk as guest. It's definitely a fan favourite.

I consider that performance Nightwish adjacent and my favorite of the three "Nightwish" performances. They are clearly using the Nightwish arrangement, just not as metal. More hard rock/musical theater. I absolutely love Floor's vocals in that version. Definitely in a musical theater style with more of a straight tone and lot more ornamentation in her runs, especially in that famous last section. Tarjas's big wobbly vibrato in that section isn't to my taste.

If you've never heard the Andrew Lloyd Webber version i wouldn't bother now, because it's nothing compared to this 😂😂😂 THIS is how the original should have sounded. For Poet and the Pendulum just to warn you the lyrics are VERY dark, and typically quite cryptic. The live version from Wembley is my favourite metal performance of all time. It's absolute perfection in every single way possible. For performances with Tarja i recommend Deep Silent Complete, Swanheart and Walking in The Air (all Live Wishes to Eternity, the latter being a cover of the main title from the British animated short Christmas movie The Snowman), Wishmaster, Nemo and Sleeping Sun (all Live End of an Era - same concert as Phantom you just heard)

Hi Lanae. Great new opening titles btw! This was recorded in 2005 and was the very last performance that Tarja (pronounced Tar-ee-ya) ever did with the band. That evening she was sacked by way of an 'open letter' which has caused controversy for years. It's funny that you remarked upon the onstage chemistry between Marko and Tarja - in truth, at that point, Marko and the rest of the band were having great difficulties with her 'Diva' attitude, and this was the root cause of her dismissal. As others have said, the band re-recorded a version in 2022 in Amsterdam with Floor. She has been with the band for Eleven years now, yet there is still a factional enmity between Tarja and Floor fans. Personally, I think it is a ridiculous argument, as Floor replaced Anette, the second singer, NOT Tarja. Anyway, you take care x

Everyone except Tarja knew she was going to be fired after the show and Marko was definitely part of that (she'd told them she was going to quit after the next album but they didn't want to drag it out). If interested in some great Tarja era songs, listen to Nemo, Sleeping Sun, Over the Hills and Faraway, Snowman (live version) as well as I wish I had an Angel with Tarja. She is the sound of white snow and clean ice in the dead of the winter, crystal-like waters of the mountain rivers of Lapland and the pale, ageless midnight sun coming trough the leaves of the ancient Finnish forests. Live or album, doesn't matter. With Anette, only listen to studio versions (Amaranth, Storytime). She is great on album, but honestly not great live (when singing Tarja era songs). She is very good live when singing songs that had been written to her instrument, aka her voice.

I'm always happy to see how you get to know the music of Nightwish. I also came across Nightwish by chance at some point, and today I'm a big fan. Unfortunately, there are no radio stations here in Germany or anywhere else in Europe that play the bands. Only charts that are manipulated by big producers apply here. Sometimes you think that the radio stations only have 10 records. Formation and Origins of Nightwish: Nightwish was formed in 1996 in Kitee, Finland, by Tuomas Holopainen, Emppu Vuorinen, and Tarja Turunen. The band originally started as Holopainen's acoustic music experiment, which quickly evolved into a full-fledged band as they recorded their first demos. This initial lineup was crucial in establishing the unique symphonic metal style that Nightwish is famous for. Key Members: Tuomas Holopainen: Founder and main composer of the band. He plays keyboards and is the creative heart of Nightwish. Tarja Turunen: The original vocalist, known for her powerful, operatic voice, which was a major contribution to the band’s unique sound. She was with the band from 1996 to 2005. Emppu Vuorinen: Guitarist and co-founder of the band, known for his melodic yet powerful guitar style. Marco Hietala: Bassist and vocalist who joined the band in 2001. His gritty vocals and distinctive bass playing further shaped the band's sound. He left the band in 2021. Anette Olzon: Vocalist from 2007 to 2012, who joined the band after Tarja's departure. Floor Jansen: The current vocalist who joined in 2012 and has significantly contributed to the band’s evolving sound. Background of the Band: Nightwish blends elements of symphonic metal with classical music and film score elements. Their music is known for epic, orchestral arrangements, complex compositions, and profound lyrics. The band often draws on literary, mythological, and nature-related themes. Message to the Audience: Through their music, Nightwish aims to convey various messages. Their song themes range from personal experiences and emotions to societal and philosophical issues. Nature and Environmentalism: Songs like "Elan" and "The Greatest Show on Earth" reflect a deep connection to nature and a message of environmental preservation. Human Experience and Emotion: Many songs deal with personal struggles, losses, and triumphs, helping the audience to form an emotional connection with the music. Philosophical and Spiritual Questions: The band also explores deep, existential questions, encouraging reflection on the meaning of life and our place in the universe. Overall, Nightwish seeks to create an emotional and intellectual connection with their audience through their music, encouraging reflection and awareness about the world and human existence.

Enjoyed your reaction! This is my second favorite "Nightwish" performance of this song. My favorite is with Floor Jansen and Henk Poort in 2019 from the Dutch singing show Beste Zangers. It is not with Nightwish but the house band, The Marcel Fisser Band, uses a less metal version of Tuomas's arrangement. Beste Zangers is a show where famous Dutch singers from different genres of music are brought together and each show one singer is in the spotlight and the other singers sings songs from the artists catalog or that are meaningful to them except for teh last show where they sing duets. Henk Poort is a famous Dutch musical theater star and was best known for being the original Phantom in the first Dutch production of the Phantom of the Opera. Floor saw him as a teenager in that role and always loved the song and a big reason for her doing the show was to meet Henk. She asked him to sing Phantom with and he agreed as long as the next time Nightwish was in Amsterdam he would get to sing it with Floor and Nightwish. That performance is my favorite because of Floor's choice to sing in a more musical theater style with more straight tone and her beautiful ornamentations in her runs. For me, the best part of this performance is Marko. He totally steals the show with his gritty, creepy Phantom. I think there are other Nightwish songs that show off Tara's beautiful dark enchanting voice. Songs like The Siren, Planet Hell, Bless the Child, Wish I had an Angel, Nemo and Forever Yours. I especially love the music videos for Nemo and Sleeping Sun (2005 video with Tarja in a beautiful dress striding across a medieval battlefield like a Valkyrie) with her. Funny you mention their connection. I think that was them being professionals. There was already some big rifts between the band and Tarja and they fired her right after this concert. Yes that was a Jack Sparrow doll on Tuomas's keyboard. Tuomas does bear a striking resemblance to Jack Sparrow and Tuomas is a big fan of Hans Zimmer who was one of the composers for the soundtrack for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Don't know if Tuomas did that by his choice or if the roadies did it for fun and he thought it was cool.

Tarja's answer to Nightwish for the Poet and the Pendulum. When you get into the documentaries and what happened there was so much wrong done to Tarja. Enough Song by Tarja Turunen Ego selfish primadonna Dancing in your poisoned cage Thinking that your conscience's clearer If you drink your dreams away Feed your anger to the devil In your self built wishing well Take a swim in muddy waters All the dirt will leave a trail Had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away Masterpiece of treachery Build a wall and make me crumble Just because I am in love Don't you cry now look at all the Dolls and toys that you have got Smashed the mirror of perversion With the dagger that you made Mirror, mirror, is there someone Who can make your day today? Had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away I've had enough symphonies of sorrow Beasts of prey one breath away Masterpiece of treachery Kept my thoughts buried in a box With each shot I still kept it locked You drew a play written with my blood Went ahead just to feed the lot I've had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away I've had enough symphonies of agony Beasts of prey one breath away Masterpiece of treachery kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zqx7xNaIacXdXaQ.html

@@melicriszoe1 It was jealousy from Tuomas. He clearly had love interest that wasn't mutual. Tarja did the work for Nightwish and also had her beloved man to give attention to that also took her managers role. Tarja was asking what she was worth and because of these things Tuomas wanted her gone. He was too weak to handle the emotional side of it. It is hard to deal with someone new that you are in direct conflict with that is about a girl you are in love with and you lost to him. Tarja was very understanding in her letter and press conference but after using her as the target for Nightwish bitter songs I think she put it strait on this song "Enough".

The proper Nightwish version of this song! I love Floor and she has been the perfect frontwoman for Nightwish but this version has no holding back from the singers its crazy and I think that is what makes the song metal! The Floor / Henk version is too controlled and similar to the original and loses it's metal edge because of it.

With regards to “Poet and the Pendulum”: of course listen to songs in any order you want, but it definitely adds a LOT to the experience if you understand the backstory to it, which is arguably the band’s most important song. I remember watching one reactor whose very first Nightwish song was Poet, and man that dude was in over his head. But anyways, keep going ,love these !

2005. The final show with Tarja. Yup. that is ole Jack Sparrow. Tuomas is a big film fan. Lots of documentaries. There is context to understand what the PNP is all about. It is a very personal and emotional song for Tuomas and everyone in Nightwish. With the back story will come the understanding of the imagery and poetic metaphors used in the lyrics. It is a song that is very much like a movie or musical play. It tells a poetic story of tragedy and redemption. A band is like a marriage and when it goes bad it can be quite devastating.

Now that you have heard in the comments about the rift forming in the band and that this was Tarja’s last show, you should read the open letter given to Tarja after this show as well as her response. This will provide more context to The Poet and the Pendulum, as Tuomas addresses the fallout and responses from that fallout from the fans. Read those letters, then I would say to react to the video for Bye Bye Beautiful (which is Tuomas’ goodbye letter to Tarja), Master Passion Greed (Tuomas’ letter to Tarja’s husband, whom the band mainly blamed for the change in Tarja’s behavior), then the Poet and the Pendulum (which is Tuomas’ reply to the fans who believed he was to blame for the entire fiasco. That will provide context, especially with the introduction to Anette.

This is a cornerstone of Nightwish‘s history. And the Phantom story of Nightwish does not end here. So, they break up with Tarja after this concert. The stars haven‘t aligned yet for Floor, and Anette becomes Nightwish‘s next singer. Anette has a pop voice and no operatic ability, so Nightwish‘s music has to adapt and gets more poppy. Anette is not so great life, but has the ability to transport the songs through recording; as a result some very good official non-live videos are from Anette“s time (Amaranth, Storytime). But Nightwish is a live band and does world tours, and in 2012 they just can‘t work anymore with Anette and separate during the US tour. In the mean time, Floor‘s band After Forever has broken up; she has been through burnout and thought about quitting music. She is at her sisters wedding when she gets a phonecall from an unknown number. It‘s Tuomas, and he asks if Floor can jump in as singer to finish their world tour, and by the way „Can you learn the setlist in 48 hours?“ There is a video documentary with that title you should watch. Fast forward to 2019. Floor is a Metal world star, but virtually unknown in her home country the.Netherlands. So in 2019 she enters a tv show called „Beste Zangers“ (best singers). It is a.show where a handful of singers sit together and interpret songs for each other in a small intimate setting. Each of them has an evening where each of the others interprets one song, either from their repertoire or a song which has special meaning for them. The first evening is for Henk Poort. Henk is one of the most well known opera and musical theatre performers of the Netherlands; he was the first „official“ Phantom of the Dutch production and Floor idolized him when she was young. So when he asks of anyone has prepared something operatic, Floor jumps up and performs „Vilja Lied“. They hit it off artistically, and at the end of the show they perform „Phantom of the Opera“ together. Henk extracts a promise from Floor to perform that song together with Nightwish. Then Covid strikes; all concerts are canceled; Marko leaves the band without ever singing Phantom with Floor. (Sob!) After Covid, tours slowly resume. In 2022 Nightwish performs in Amsterdam during their world tour. At that concert, without prior announcement, a very special duett is added to the set list with a special guest performer… Cue the Nightwish Army completely losing it! ;-) And, yes, please watch all the videos I mentioned here.

"Amaranth" is one of Nightwish's biggest hits, and a really different vibe from some of the other things you've heard from them. Also "Eva" and "The Islander" from the Dark Passion Play album. Be warned though, DPP is by far Nightwish's most divisive album with the fanbase, but i also think that makes it just that much more interesting.
