The People On This Greek Island Live Over 100 Years | The Art Of Living | Tonic

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ikaria, an isolated island in the Greek archipelago, is on average 10 years older than the rest of Europe. Niklas meets wine producers and beekeepers, and takes a closer look at what the cause may be.
Niklas travels the world exploring Blue Zones, areas where people often turn over 100 years old. What is it that makes a long life in these places not only possible but also likely?
In this food and lifestyle documentary series, internationally renowned chef Niklas Ekstedt explores the secret of living past the age of 100. He’s travelling to six of the world’s ‘blue zones’ - regions such as Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Okinawa in Japan, where unusually high numbers of people reach an advanced age - in a quest to find the recipe for a long and healthy life. Along the way, he befriends locals and gets to know them, joining in with their daily routines and discussing their approaches to life, food, and ageing. He also reveals different ways of living. For example, in Ikaria, Greece, he discovers a town which keeps the stress levels down by not keeping track of time. And, as you would expect from a leading chef, he also can’t resist sampling some of the local specialties in every place he visits.

Yes. Both. If I am correct folks like that don't do all the "counting" of everything like so many do over here in America. They just eat foods that naturally help you all the time and the food is balancing so therefore no need to "count/tradeoff/watch" what you eat so much/if at all due to how the food is natural and good for you.

Hallo!!!! I am Greek and I also live in Greece although I haven't visited Ikaria. In terms of herbs and virgin olive oil it is true that we eat a lot, as well as vegetables. We use olive oil everyday for cooking and basically on our salad. Olive oil is a remedy for many physical disorders .In every city there is a marketplace at least once a week where someone can buy fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs which most of them are cultivated by farmers. Of course, we can find them in supermarkets but in marketplace they are more fresh and less expensive. Generally, the Greek cuisine contains lots of herbs such as dill, parsley, oregano, mint, basil and green salad like radish , kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, tomatoes and cucumbers, green and yellow peppers, paprika and fresh green onions and onions.

As a Greek this is a myth about vegetarian life in Greece as it is very meat based, especially in ikaria where the meat eaten is primarily goat, lamb , pork and fish. Vegetables and fruits are seasonal and herbs are added to cooking, but the Greek diet is not vegetarian. In fact a lot of dairy is consumed as well from region to region. This video doesn’t show the entire story unfortunately.

This is an excellent example of a high context culture. They value the moments of life and how they communicate within relationships is not to be rushed whether with people, growing, preparing or eating food which is seldom done alone. They are the original slow food movement, common all around many Mediterranean cultures.

So beautiful. And watching all these episodes just confirms to me all over again what I intuitively always knew: that we are supposed to eat what the earth gives us, what grows locally and what is fresh and available seasonally. A wide variety of foods, a mix of everything from herbs to vegetables meat fish wine all is perfect. Prepared the way our ancestors prepared the foods. No need for these new health crazes that today´s society is so happy to promote. No need to put weird vegan sausages with undecipherable ingredients in your shopping baskets. Just stay away from all of these strange processed foods that you find on the shelves everywhere that has nothing real and natural in it. Meat is not bad for you, even alcohol isn´t. Everything in moderation and in balance. The chemicals and toxic ingredients they put in foods and all this "invented" stuff they come up with that´s what is unhealthy. Just eat close to nature and your health will thank you. Also be thankful for the food before you eat it, be it plants or animal products. Treat the animals well and make sure they have a good life .. and the products they provide will be healthful to us people. Everything has a vibration. What we eat connects us with the electromagnetic field of the earth. Yet better if you yourself or someone you love prepares the food with their hands. Loved this series of visiting the Blue Zones - wonderful content!

I believe some enterprising Ikarians now sell their wine online. But the VAT tax is tough. One thing not mentioned in this video - while the Ikarians drink a lot of wine - they never get drunk. To be drunk is a thing of shame and foolishness. They cut their wine with water. They've done that for centuries. When someone gets drunk on the island in the summertime, the locals will laugh and say, "Ah, a German," or, "Ah, an American."

I would love to relocate to Ikaria. Since I can't get good wine in the US, that is a natural wine, I just make beer so I know what's in it. I even grow several varieties of hops. I am convinced that hops are the secret to the preservation of the liver. We'll see.

I would love to try some organic wine from one of these locations, I have tried making my own and it was terrible but I’d made it from juice. I think the trick is using real grapes and probably the right ones, organic of course!

They have a limited number of bee species on the island. Also, no wolves, bears, coyotes, or any other type of animal found in mainlands across the world. They are a very isolated island. So, they deal with the bees they have.
