The Passion Translation: Encountering God?... Or Deception?

There's SO much more to say about this topic. The Passion Translation is an independent, one-man 'translation' of the Bible. It's 'translated' by Brian Simmons, a respected figure in the hyper-charismatic community. We talk a lot about him and his claimed credentials for translating the Passion Translation. This isn't a 'translation' so much as it is a re-worded and re-written Bible made to fit the theology and terminology used in what people have called the NAR- The New Apostolic Reformation.
There's a lot more information on this listed below. Please consider further research on the origins of this Bible.

I’ve noticed recently, after watching a lot of Pastor Winger’s and Melissa and Doreen’s videos, some concerning things in my own church. From prosperity-ish messages (God wants you to be without troubles!), to Bethel songs (reckless love), to reading from the Passion “translation”. I’m really uncomfortable when these things go on, it’s clear the leaders think they’re doing the right thing, the emotion and sincerity is evident. It’s absolutely terrifying how sneakily the new age is creeping into the House of God, even Christians aren’t immune to being deceived!!! We need to be discerning and diligent in our study of the INFALLIBLE Word. It’s all we have

This reminds me of Sarah Young's book, Jesus Calling. On top of the adulteration and personal interpretation of scripture, this is emotional manipulation, something we see taking place in churches now -- the repeated mantras and swells in music all geared toward pulling the congregation in through their emotions. Obedience to God doesn't have to involve these intense emotions. "The fruit of the Spirit is... ...self-control." Must we have an emotional reaction to get something out of scripture? Why not simply read God's word, learn and apply?

45:45-47:25 YES, this was me at my old church. I felt great after leaving service because I kept hearing how I was going to change the world and do all these awesome things, and kept hearing the same crap over and over again. Real life would hit and I would fall apart, then hear how I needed to stir myself up and dance and worship until I felt better or my trial/tribulation/regular sucky life circumstance was over. It was so detrimental to my mental health. Those kind of teachings can lead to such a warped view of God and His character ☹

Kimberlee, Your testimony is becoming more prevalent today and that isn't a good thing. I have heard the same thing from so many others who become disillusioned with the whole "Jesus loves you, it's okay" spiel for exactly the reasons you mentioned. People need to know, before they can truly understand and accept what Christ did for them, that they were enemies of God, lost without Him in the world. We're just not preaching that today...

The fist time my pastor read from the Passion i was disgusted. I didn't understand why but i instantly hated it. It was as if i felt insulted and tasted something vile at the same time. The pastor looked up at our little flock and said, "isnt that beautiful?" And I literally said, "No!" So i did a little research. It wasnt much but it was enough to convince me that it wasn't a valid translation and probably shouldn't be used in service. My pastor read from it a few times since and every time i felt appalled. I said something to our associate pastor and thought it was resolved.... This past Sunday my son told me his Sunday school teacher used the Passion in class and i was instantly alarmed. And now, a few days later, this video shows up in my feed.... Wow! I now have some good information to bring to my church about this "translation!" Thank you for investigating and bringing light and truth. Please continue this good work for the glory of God. I pray my church elders hear my plea!

I've been hearing this term, "activate" in reference to the Holy Spirit...at the church I've been attending. Plus, lots of other things that I've been questioning--which led me to do research on "prosperity gospel" & Word of Faith movement--once I had a term to research (just recently). That opened up a whole world of information. So, the more I learn from Melissa on this channel, Mike Winger's channel, Allen Parr, Apologia Studios, Cultish, Steven Bancartz, & Spencer Smith the more my questions are answered. While there is relief in learning more about the truth, there is a grieving process when you realize some things. It feels like you just discovered you have a very bad fiance & must break off the impending marriage--coupled with a desire to warn others. Still processing & determining next steps...Ultimately, very thankful for the brave folks willing to share this information.

"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed." Gal. 1:8 Adding to, subtracting from, and rewording God's Holy Scriptures is clearly a cursed action. Even just adding the word "a" completely changes Christian theology in John by changing "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God" to "the Word was a god." Satan mascarades as an angel of light and Joseph Smith justified his "revelation" by claiming he was instructed by an angel. We have the complete Scripture and need no angel to teach us. I fear that those who receive angelic revelation are heretics, longing to receive special knowledge, just as Adam and Eve desired the special knowledge Satan offered in the Garden of Eden.

Anyway, I’ll pray about this too! And hopefully not get my answer through a TPT devo lol! Edit* I like when Mike says “you have no authority to change God’s Word” and then goes on to share Proverbs “Every word of the Lord is pure. Do not add to His word, lest He rebuke you”.... The fact that The Passion ‘Translation’ has become so popular so quickly is a big concern. People think they’re reading the Word of God but they aren’t. At best it’s one man’s work to promote his twisted theology. At worst, it’s demonically inspired. And considering how Simmons says he got started on the project (a visit to the library of heaven, talking directly with Jesus, and being shown John 22 on a shelf) I think I know which it is.

If I was to give a translation from the bible, it would not be accepted as truth because I am only one? If it is God's truth, that would be blasphemy not to believe. The disciples asked Jesus, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" Jesus replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, has been given to you, but not to them. Jesus said in ( John 16:25 ) Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my father. He called it another language. He was speaking in tongues. That is why there are so many different translations. He said, "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the World. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field; the field is the world. In Revelation, The new heaven and the new earth, and I saw the Holy city, the New Jerusalem. The Angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city it's gate's and it's wall's. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be about 1400 miles in lenght. And as wide as it is high. The city was laid out like a square. A square is a measuring tool like a "L" shape ruler, but more like a compus. It's as easy as putting a camel through the eye of a needle, if the needle is a state and the camel is a town. With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible. It to bad that no one believes in me. The Son of Man has the authority to forgive sins on earth, and whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened. So the problem I have is that I AM only one? ( Matt.18:19 ) Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my father In heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Now if this was true, this world would be a whole lot better, don't you think? And the reason why is because the son's name is Immanuel, which means, God with us. And God gave him that name. (1 John 4:1-3 ) "Test the spirit"

Can you add to my list of red flags about this translation? 1. Translated by one person 2. Isn’t qualified to make a translation 3. Lies about his work/qualifications 4. Says it’s good enough for careful study when it’s basically a paraphrase. 5. Says there’s a secret chapter in John yet to be revealed. 6. Sells the Bible over-priced in parts 7. Claims special knowledge about the biblical languages. If you go on the passion translation website and read the verse comparisons it exposes itself. Read the other 4 translations compared to TPT and it’s the odd one out in several of the given texts.

I’ve done literally hundreds of their “bible plans” and a lot of them are from contemporary charismatic preachers.. until pretty recently I never knew the problem with reading and/or listening to people like Joyce Meyer, TD Jakes, etc. God in His rich mercy has brought me out of the charismatic movement but I wonder if it’s wrong to keep using YouVersion seeing how much they promote the new and false Christianity and bible “translations”. Would love to know some of your thoughts.

I've approached them already 3 or more times in the past with simular experience but then I noticed one of their members maybe even founder is involved in the NAR movement deeply which made me understand why they are so passive in their response. I loved the app but I decided for that reason to uninstall it, but like the App +Sharon Benjamin mentioned I'm using the blue letter bible app too. Not the sleek interface maybe but it has solid tools like cross reference, translation comparison and for me very useful text commentaries included, I use the one of David Guzik. I can recommend that app too.

I appreciate this discussion. It's becoming more and more scary to be part of the church in these last days. It doesn't feel safe because everyone seems to be on a different page re. Bethel movement, Prosperity Gospel, NAR, end times, same sex attraction and social justice. After nearly 38 years of doing my best to stay close to the Lord, I am beginning to feel safer in 'the world' than the Body of Christ. At least there, you know the basic ground rules.

I never knew there was any controversy about this translation until someone mentioned it at our church recently. Unfortunately our pastors use both the passion and the message translations (along with other more reliable translations). I sent this video to our pastor's wife, hopefully she'll pay attention and pass it along to her husband, our head pastor. . I also sent it to a friend of mine who loves this transition and she replied to my message with "yeah no, 20 minutes into this video and I don't believe a word these people are saying". Then she proceeded to argue with me about the credibility of it and all the translations but completely missed the point that ONE delusional guy came up with the passion where as TEAMS of scholars put together the bible. (The true collection of Godly inspired words). I hope she is lead to look deeper into it. I know there are many out there who would rather just follow blindly these things that make them feel good. . Honestly I enjoyed this translation for the most part until I learned of the truth of it. Now I know better and will stay away from it. I'm starting to feel like we need to find a new church as well, especially if the pastor keeps using these translations! There are other things I'm not very comfortable with at our church as well however for now the good things outweigh the bad so we'll stay for now.🤷‍♀️ Thank you for this video and all the info!! You guys are awesome.

Oh man, the NAR church we came out of endorsed the Passion Translation and invited Brian Simmons to come speak each year. Our young pastor swore by this “translation” and told everyone about it. So so sad how far the church has drifted from Scripture and can’t discern if they are reading a false translation. Sighhhhhhhh! 😮🤨

My old pastor started teaching from the Passion shortly after I left the church when they started bringing NAR into the church... A week before Brian Simmons was supposed to come speak at his church, something awoke in him and he became aware of the danger of it and how off it is, he began researching it and ended up throwing it away and telling Brian not to come. Praise God that he woke up from that. We have to pray for these pastors who are being led away by these teachings. God can bring them back!

God is a righteous Judge. He knows best. Pray for these folks to discern, wake up & that God saves them. Even those who appear to be saved, we may not know they are. Only God can know the heart. @@grapesofthevine1801, I looked at a recent video from Brian Houston's church Hillsong and he was reading from a passion Bible. He said on another video that we believe in the same God as the Muslims, no we don't. Anyway I have nothing to do with his church or Bethel. There are 2 very good channels perhaps 3 that expose wolves. One is STEVEN KOZAR, another is SPENCER SMITH there are 2 by the same name so a good title to start you off of his is MODERN WORSHIP = WESTERN WHITE MAGIC HYPNOTISM? The last one is FIGHTING FOR THE FAITH. Some church leaders and most evangelists use Freemason hand signs like Kenneth Copeland and even Joel Osteen.

Mike and Melissa, thank you for all your videos. My wife and I have watched too many of them to count. Bless you both for calling out the things of this NAR movement and bringing to light what many people don't have a clue about. This morning I was reading in 2 Thessalonians, and wouldn't you know it. Just as the Holy Spirit does, He puts things into perspective as we allow Him to speak to us. Check this out. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NIV Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us-whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter-asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. No wonder this false religion is so wrapped up in miracles, signs, and wonders. They're paving the way for the anti christ to be revealed and have millions of followers. They won't be put off by the things he says or does because they will be used to it. They will have been hearing these heresies already in their churches by this anti christ's predecessors. Couple that with Gods powerful delusion and they won't know anything is wrong. Even now we see so many of these blind followers coming out of bethel and the like. They have an almost cultic attitude toward love and worship, not like the normalcy we would see at a normal church. It is strange indeed. The biggest problem I'm seeing is that this NAR movement is infiltrating even our normal churches because of their exquisite, even excellent music. Not many are sounding the alarm and even when they do most pastors, like mine, are not taking it seriously. In my opinion, in the past clowns like Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer were definitely deceiving many. But they were not really accepted as legitimate. Not like now with what is happening with this new NAR movement. It is creeping into (for lack of a better term) every orifice of the Christian body of believers. I am struggling with what church to go to. Jesus sure wasn't joking when He talked about a narrow gate. It seems as if it may be shrinking as well.

God bless your ministry. I’m so encouraged that you’re bringing awareness of the deceitfulness of the passion bible. When I first read a passage from the passion bible, it was a translation that interpret the Bible for you. The way the translator wanted me to take in. Immediately red flag went up. The truth is if you’re a student of the scripture, every word counts and directs what God wants us to understand. For the passion bible to add lines and words into the passage that’s not in the original scripture clearly shows it’s evil intent. What better way to confuse and destroy believers than to adulterate the scared text? This is so serious if many are beginning to read this bible. In a time where very few believers read and study the Bible, the church is primed to embrace this danger. Thank you for your heart to up hold the truth.

I think you are right about the NAR and how this translation makes their teachings palatable . It’s very emotion based. My husband really liked psalms and proverbs . He was abused as a kid and it was a great starting translation . He nows reads the ESV . All in all I was not impressed and haven’t wanted to read it again. I love the ISV , KJV and sometimes the Amplified. Most importantly, I pray before I read any translation that God would send his Holy Spirit and wisdom and understanding and he always does.

Thank yo for sharing this, it is soo important!🙏 I just want to share one thing. It is important what translation you have, even if it is close to the original text. There are often small differences that are very subtle. I know by own experience. Here in Sweden there is different translations and they can look good at first sight, but then when you look closer you see small differences. For example one whole verse is taken away in many translations and in one place half of the verse. It is an hidden agenda I believe. I recommend strongly to have KJV, it was like God's word really got alive when I changed to that translation, from other translations I have read before❤🙏

Sadly, this is true of the large Baptist Church I was attending: They use Bethel and Hillsong music, incorporate the Passion and The Message, embrace the worldly "Social Justice" narratives . . . And the leaders got VERY defensive when congregants raised concern. These seem to be the consequences of the many churches that are more concerned with 'seeker sensitivity' and numbers than anything else.

This actually goes much deeper. The NLT also adds a lot and was originally labeled a paraphrase. Having worked in the field of Bible Translation in Nigeria, my take is that all translations have a level of bias, not as much as the Passion but it is still there. You mention the interlinear, scholars with some level of bias chose the English word to go with the Hebrew or Greek when there is sometimes several options. Point being that even an interlinear can have bias.

I just bought my kids new bibles recently and both are NKJV while I use my MEV for study and NET for devotions. There are so many translations it's kind of overwhelming and then throws new believers off.

Thank you for all your work and insight! Our passion is the Truth, God's Word, Jesus' love, salvation because of Jesus taking our place! What an awesome Saviour! We don't need a new Bible, we need a new heart! Praise God for His faithfulness to us. (I'm concerned, too, that even NIV Bibles aren't the same anymore as they used to be. You can't read the same version together, because they're being changed! Don't even get a new NIV, stick with your old ones!!)
