I just watched survivor for the first time! I am so sad to hear about Rudy. I was so shocked to see you and Rudy’s relationship from a show in 2000! I was in kindergarten as it aired and it would have been great to see a relationship like that back then. I’m sure you two DID change a lot of people’s lives.

Hi Richard, I have to say, I just got back into survivor after more than ten years of not watching. I rewatched Borneo, and I have to say, after watching it as an adult, I really liked the way you played the game. I remember as a twelve year old watching Borneo, I thought you were nasty, but now, I think your game was less nasty than others and extremely strategic and groundbreaking. I think the best thing that probably ever happened in survivor was your alliance/friendship with Rudy. What I really liked in Rudy is that he was willing to change and adapt some of his views from day one, seeing that they were all young and that he had to fit in. This is the real difference between Rudy and for example B.B. Andersen who was unwilling to change. But definitely your game with Rudy was legendary. And I reckon had you stayed on All stars atleast until the merge, you would've taken care of Amber and Rob who somehow convinced everyone else to follow them. you would not have fell for that. Had you been in Lex's position, you would've sent Amber home, and that would've made it more interesting. If only. Cheers!

Richard, thx so much for talking about Rudy...The only thing missing in the video was a few anecdotes, I would have loved to have heard a few short, funny stories that came to mind...I was not aware that his wife, Marg, passed before he did.. Rudy was very much a beloved icon and our gruff hero.. I believe he knew exactly what he was doing when he friended you on Season One.. You worked your butt off each day to feed your entire tribe, and got zero thanks, ungrateful folks..Rudy saw through both of your differences, and Rudy knew, in his heart, Richard Hatch understood what must be done to keep his tribe alive, Hatch came through, battling genius fish every day..Rudy was so much like you- if the island was under attack, Rudy would have dragged you, and the others out, one by one, on his back, through quicksand...Just in case you do not know, I think he would have jumped in front of a bus for you... as far as Jeff Probst goes, he and Burnette have lots of nerve, posting ( IN Memory ) newsclips that Rudy had passed away to viewers, without one word of PERSONAL thanks to the messenger..( you ) The classy thing for both men to have done, would have been to air a few clips, from the past, which showed how close you 2 guys as buddys were, it would have been a classy way to thank you.. Richard, just like every one of out here have a shit load of enemies- you have yours, too...People are easily very threatened by folks who deeply understand human nature, and who are just born with a touch of genius.. Folks are jealous of, and feel inadequate when they admire somebody who is cool and calm, and these types are royally pissed when folks are correct, and when folks cut through hard situations like hot butter like a knife...( remember when you grinned, and whispered you probably could start a fire by blinking your eye ? or, when you shared, “ Im not even hungry “ ? ). These turds do not such up your funny anecdotes with grace, and smile, because it is meant by you as humor...The dumb asses are furious, as they feel you have made them look stupid...As if Burnette somehow poked the casting director in both eyeballs, because, except for you and Rudy, the rest were a bunch of Brownie Scouts.. Dont carry the weight of the ( slow burn ) they still feel, as it is THEIR problem, not yours... Like I said, the smarter and cooler you are, the longer your enemy list is...Probst is so holier-than-thou-he still does not know how to dress himself properly, and is kidding himself if fans do not know he has dated former female contestant on seasons past...He needs to get lifts in his footwear, he might even be shorter than Tom Cruise...*** If Rudy were here right now, he would tell you to ( fuck ‘em both ) I am glad you were honest enough with us, to share the truth about how your respectful phone call to execs about Rudy’s decline was handled...I indeed think you had every right to feel very resentful...Not because how those 2 snubbed you- but because you rightly felt that Rudy deserved much more respect than that...Rich, you are on target, because you do not watch people’s lips, you watch their ( hands/deeds ). Of course, Jeff is obligated to be a ( company man ) because that job keeps him safe, but he is paying a price...By the time Jeff gets to enjoy the nest egg he built, he will be too damn old to lift a spoon to his mouth...Meanwhile, I know Rudy and Marg have new bodies, they look great, and are in Paradise...Your old buddy looks in on you from time to time, and Rudy saw everything that you did for him, and the TRUTH is written in the book of life...Rudy likely owns a big pub in Paradise, and one of the bar stools has his buddy Hatch’s name on the wooden back...I bet it is well known up there, that nobody is allowed to put their butt on your bar stool- because it is special...Reserved for his fat-assed, queer friend, Hatch...yup, his FRIEND...keep in mind, Rich, a guy like Rudy has very few trusted buddies, you were one...( Burnette and Probst can put THAT in their pipe and smoke it ). I very much liked this video content, and hope you pick up speed...Richard, pick up your head, and hold it up high...based upon what I just watched, consider me subscribed....I really had forgotten what a good guy you are...blessings, and remember, ( your fans love you ). xxoo

I just started rewatching the first seasons that I haven't seen since they originally aired and it was so nice to see your relationship with him when I have no doubt in my mind that a big reason they cast you and him was they wanted to see conflict. Ironically you both not just played as an alliance in the game, but you actually had a very real friendship. It was so nice to rewatch it after 20+ years and I don't know if you still are active and read comments on youtube, but I hope you are doing well. You should have gotten further in season 8's all stars, and I don't know if they used the Sue 'incident' blown out of proportion as an excuse, but they should have had you on season 40's all winners cast. Out of curiosity, if you were asked, would you ever play again up until you were 72 which is how old I think Rudy was in season 1? Take care! 🙂

I'm sorry for your loss Richard. Rudy was the absolute best. I was 18 years old when survivor 1 came out and it blew doors on everything and changed the reality/television game completely and forever. You were obviously instrumental in that. Unfortunately it spawned the cesspool that reality television has become over the last 20 years but it is what it is I guess...It's a reflection on and of a corrupt and broken America if you ask me. Rudy was the absolute best and always a fan favorite. I just went back and watched the first season again for the first time since it originally aired and got a few things out of it and enjoyed Rudy just as much now as I did back then. I hope you are doing well and I appreciate the insight you provide. Take care champ.

Rudy showed the audience what they had forgotten in this crappy PC world we now live in. How to be yourself. He up front, in your face, no holds bar type of person. It is sad on how petty Jeff Probst was with how he handled things in Rudy’s last days. To not to have been “man” enough to reach out and contact you to get in touch with his family shows how smallJeff Probst has become. Survivor used to be one of my favorites, but because of wanting higher ratings, Probst would rather sacrifice the essence of the show. Sad Thank you for your tribute to the “Old Bullfrog”. He will be missed, but he is back with Marge. (And it’s bull crap that you aren’t on Season 40. They needed to “shake things up” after the fiasco of last season. You would’ve done that, and Survivor would have told the world that they go by their own rules. Being PC is just putting the show to death.)

If the mind is blind so are the eyes. Richard your words in this post reminds me of a father who imparts great wisdom to the children of the world. The story of you and Rudy deserves to be a best seller. You and Rudy proved that surface appearance in no way shows a person’s greatness, darkness or the many shades between. Glanced judgment anoints self-proclaimed judges with cascades of neon arrogance and ignorance as seen by the self-aware. Make the public look at itself gaining some level of self-awareness with the inner story of Rudy and Richard. Prove a meeting of the minds can happen on some level in the most unsuspecting ways if you just look. It’s been said that looking deep within one’s self is the path to outward gain. Just what did you two find within that built a bridge between two very different worlds? When did that spark ignite, did it smolder over time or hit you two like a cosmic brick? Who opened that door or did it happen naturally and mutually. Richard please peal back the many layers of this friendship on paper from your perspective and also what Rudy may have expressed on this subject. Note: I say on paper because it can detail things a three hour movie could not but a movie would be grand. The Challenge: Speech is linear whereas concepts are globular leaving the perception of language subjective, a place where intent often resembles a startled flock of quail. Words are only words not necessarily transferred thoughts or ideas in a world where perceptions of black and white splinters into a thousand shades of grey. It’s much like the countless influential factors that author a person’s world view, albeit right or wrong it’s a person’s reality. Is (knowledge) and knowing the same thing? Is (a truth) the truth? Perhaps the greatest tip of all time “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.” Socrates My Notes: Note to Richard, suggest book based on a friendship between two men from very different walks of life; a life lesson for all. “We are not our own enemy” Patrick Martin Richard this has been a time coming but I hope it inspires greatness that can change not only a swath of the world but all of it.

I will always believe that Survivor was put together in part to give Rudy a million dollars, and he knew it, and thats why he was so pissed off when he lost. So many times it seems production saved him, and the last immunity challenge is basically geared to an old man to win.

I legit just rewatched season 1 for the first time that I was 10, and I swear Rich, you and Rudy’s bond should be more represented as how America should be. Generation gaps as well as people Are different. Especially your attitude about who you are as a gay man. Being gay isn’t your entire personality, and I respect that so much. Props to you being the man who built the game the way it’s still played today: 41 seasons later!

I think with the last season or so, Survivor has forgotten that message. The producers are trying to be politically correct while causing drama. The way Zeke’s situation played out along with how Dan was handled shows that they don’t care. I think that with Dan, they thought it was nothing, but then turned it around to make themselves look like heroes.

This is from someone who dident watch the first season at air. I was 5 at the time. But when I got to high school years ago our guidance council were was doing a huge assembly about gay rights. I’m guessing 2009 or 2010. And at the end of their presentation they got questions. One was what moment in pop culture did views on homosexuality start to shift and become favourable. They said 2 moments one being Ellen coming out and also you and Rudy being able to bond and become such great friends even with the huge stigma at the time

@@TheOscar401 Well, Jenna did bring it up, but that was before they even knew Peanut Butter existed. Jeff only offered it once seeing some boobs was on the table. However, they're different things of course - seeing some consensual boobs is different than a guy consistently touching women who felt it was not consensual.
