    I decided to start Borneo over from episode 1. Watching it now, I haven't seen it since 2000. 10 minutes and 35 seconds into episode 1 Richard says..."I'm good to go survival wise. People wise it'll be a little more challenging, but I've got the million dollar check written already, I mean I'm the winner". How cool and iconic is that 😂🥰

    Producers are human... so sharing honestly is a risk. I really shared honestly, because for me, I wanted viewers to have as full and honest a picture of how I was playing. Had I edited myself in those years before viewers understood the game, it is likely I would not be perceived to be such a villain.

    There is an interview where Adam Klein said it's easy to tell who has an idol, as a contestant, if you pay attention. They'll start to follow someone for awhile out in the woods, and then stop following them and others out in the woods because there is no longer anything exciting to find or film. He said a camera person was following either Ben or Sarah, I cant remember, and then stopped following them and others, so it tipped him off to who had an idol.

    I think holding your cards close to your chest can be beneficial in Survivor sometimes. Danni was very vague in her confessionals because she didn’t want Jeff to know what she was doing and then ask “questions” at tribal that are really just ways of letting other people know what you are thinking. So in that instance it really helped. Honesty would be nice as a viewer but I wouldn’t jeopardize my game just to be honest I’m confessionals

    I wonder how much the observation of who is being pulled into confessionals and how often or how seldom that occurs affects the perception of players. Somebody who is always being pulled into confessionals has a lot going on in their game, don't they? Whereas the player that is done with their confessionals quickly might seem like a non-threat. And if you are the player who isn't being asked a lot of questions, maybe you're a nonentity in the game. It also seems to me that 'getting the take' quickly is beneficial to a player, because that means you can extend your extra time away a little more.

  • @RichHatch

    @RichHatch

    Great points! I must say, though, producers do make some effort to ensure participants are relatively-equally pulled to confessionals. That said, producers are human, and an observant player certainly can gain valuable insights by paying close attention to what's going on. Further, for viewers, please know that it is also important for you to observe confessionals somewhat critically too. They are ostensibly opportunities for the participants to openly and honestly share all that is on their minds with viewers to help viewers enjoy even more of the game... HOWEVER, as I mentioned, producers are human, and sophisticated participants sometimes hold back or somewhat alter what they say in confessionals to avoid ANY tiny chance what they say could influence how producers react or how their next questions of other participants might be influenced. OH, THE LAYERS... THE MANY, MANY LAYERS of this wonderful game.

  • @MollyPorter

    @MollyPorter

    This was my question as well. I think to Richard's point, it probably behooves the producers to get as many confessionals as possible from as many players in order to create the storyline once filming has concluded, since anything can happen and anyone can win. That's why Richard's million dollar comment on day one of his season looks so prescient. Who knows if other players made the same statement?

    How many people knew you before Survivor, 200, 500, 1000, 25,000 people? You now have a voice due to Survivor. Your a contestant on a Reality Game Show on TV. Now we have listen to your negative comments about the Game Show named “Survivor”. Didn’t you signed a contract? If you didn’t read the contract of being a contestant on a Game Show, that lasts “39” days. What gives you the right to complain about it. You signed a contract.! You knew what was expected of you, and what the TV Game Show has to produce for you. Because of Survivor, over a million viewers are looking at your negative comments on a Game Show that literally, gave you a voice. People know who you are NOW. A contestant complaining about your experience on a Game Show. Congratulations on you winning Million dollars. Why not take your fame and do something positive? You are famous now. Are you aware of the children in USA, that live in shelters, cars, cardboard boxes, under overpasses, etc? These children are the kids that will in charge in the future. One or many of these overlooked children, may hold the key to making the world that everyone has to share, better.

For example, is there any strategy in the transportation to the island? I've heard from recent players that they're all in the same plane, and some talk to each other and create pregames on the way there.

    Mr. Hatch. Curious Question: What are the reason(s) why they edit out camera/film crew & event staff on the weekly public shows? A prime example is during challenges. We see a camera person running alongside a participant, but then when they switch to another angle or drone shot looking down, we only see the participants & host Jeff Probst in motion, no one else. Respectfully Submitted & thank you Richard! I'm subscribed BTW.

  • @michael.valenti

    they do that to make the show have more interesting shots and angles and they are probably filming the crews that test the challenges (from a different time or day) from those high angles so you don't have cameras being caught on camera from above.

I was 3 when your season aired, but watched it as a teenager, not really understanding why you were perceived as such a villain. Everything you did just seemed rational, and the loyalty you demonstrated would've been perceived as damn-near heroic by today's standards. I kind of get it now (people thought it was "cheating" to make an alliance at the time, your personality rubbed some people the wrong way, etc. etc.), but did you expect America to perceive you that way coming out of Borneo? Did YOU perceive yourself as a villain the way so many others did? I'd love to know. Thanks!

But someday.....I would really love to see a full special episode......on EVERYTHING behind-the-scenes. From the beginning of the audition process.....the crews that go out & set up the challenges....the logistics of getting everyone out to the island......questions about when & how the 'loved ones' are flown out. When players are voted out......are they sent to Ponderosa,,,,,but moved elsewhere once the jury members arrive.......and then the entire cast & crew all fly home at once?

    Btw, I'm super disappointed that you are not on season 40! I watched your other video explaining what actually happened in season 8 between you and Sue. I haven't rewatched that season in years, but I have a vague recollection of Sue laughing and joking around about you being naked during the challenge. I never did understand how she went from joking around to being violated. I don't think her tribe understood it either. I always figured she was worried about what her husband might think about her joking around with you, and as a solution, chose to play the victim so it would overshadow what actually happened... which was nothing inappropriate. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the conclusion I came to after watching that challenge.

    Does Probst watch any of the confessional footage or any of the day-to-day footage? My sense is that he is aware of events and details from these that he then uses at Tribal to stir the pot and at times, manipulates the game a bit. That would be why I would be hesitant to be completely open in a confessional. That being said, it seems like one of the hardest parts of being in the game is that, unlike at a stressful job, you have no time over the 39 days where you can completely relax and unload. A confessional would be helpful for that release.
