I never thought a “recruit” was an actor. I just think it’s probably easier to win a season with a bunch of recruits (like survivor Fiji) because they aren’t necessarily fans of the show or strategically-minded.

My understanding of a "recruit" is none of those things. What I thought a recruit was just some producer goes into a bar/restaurant/park/whatever and sees someone who he/she thinks seems interesting or compelling and then gets them to apply and fasttracks into the show. Hence why we see lots of mactors that make it..... though the more I thought about it, the more I didn't really care, if they are a model or actor they are still just a person playing the same game as everyone else.

I was too young to watch Survivor when his season aired, but I recently got a copy on DVD. I'm the sort of person that likes forward thinking people, people that dare to try something that hasn't been tried before. For that reason, I was quickly drawn to Richard's game. This is probably going to receive some hate, but I was drawn to Russell's game for the same reason.

I don’t have a problem with people being recruited. However, it seems that people who are recruited are more likely to quit or be dragged. They seem more concerned with getting air time and promoting themselves than winning the game. Fans of the show and applicants usually understand how to play the game and want to win. They have much more to lose in the game they love and play like it. It works against the producers to recruit people who don’t know the show and therefore have no qualms about losing.

Respectfully Richard, your take is a strawman. But before I give my critique, I want to emphasize how essential you were to the success of the show. Your intellect set the stage for what the show became. Also, while casting and game design mistakes were made; both casting and production made many many great decisions. But to your take here ... no one is bothered by "recruits" as you describe. The tipping point in the applicant/recruit controversy was Fiji were the pool of 50,000 odd applicants (tape/casting call) were deemed boring, repetitive, untelegenic, undiverse, losers etc ... which forced Casting to recruit all but one of the cast. The lone applicant was Gary, a 55 bus driver from Minnesota. It was brazenly cynical and condesending of the fan/applicant pool (as flyoverland deplorables). It was also deceptive and reduced the fan applicant processes to a PR farce. Survivor also suffered from the Californification of the casts which damaged the geographical diversity of the casts which connected the fans to the show ... it is us playing (nothing against Cali applicant fans, 1 in 9 Americans is a Californian and therefore there should be roughly two Californians per season). Fans became disillusioned by the casting farce as they were ignored in favor of dim witted blondes discovered at Santa Monica taco stands (literally). There was also a narrative that casting all fans would destroy the show because they would play a boring game "by the (Hatch) book" of building dominate alliances going into the merge and systematically "Pagonging" the minority groups. Therefore, it was necessary to cast Survivor know nothings; recruited dolts, who literally had never seen the show, to add randomness to the game. We got a glimpse of how bullshit this all had become back in 2011 when CBS and Sears created a contest to allow fans to vote on a pool of applicants from which CBS would select 1 from the fans' Top 10. What we saw was two pools of some 5,000 applicant video tapes that were deep in compelling people. At this same time, hard core fans were also discussing game design changes that would stress "by the book" play and create more dynamic possibilities as well as strategies to the game itself that evolved passed simple alliances ... that is, ideas of how to win Survivor in ways that "passed the Zeke test". The low point was the early 20s seasons where horrible casts dominated by rediculously contrived recruits playing a game they neither cared about nor understood; they were there to be validated or to be discovered or to have a vacation ... and the show was nearly destroyed. Several of us hard core fans came together to illustrate this by loading all 5,000 application tapes onto a 3rd party website and conduct our own casting where fans voted on the 5,000 directly. Then a few of us assembled an actual cast of 18 from this pool and designed an entire season that placed these 18 super fans into a game designed to stress alliance and promote dynamic play. Many of the concept we come up with were used in subsequent seasons and ultimately we were validated when seasons of fans like S28: Cagayan were finally created and we got modern dynamic Survivor. The fan cast simulated season is still up on the fan boards ... including all 18 application videos ... would have been an amazing season. You may recognize one from our cast, Laura Nelson, who you have met at several reality TV confabs as she was subsequently cast on Naked & Afraid. www.tapatalk.com/groups/survivorsucks/survivor-east-vs-west-casting-game-design-game-pla-t99338.html

Um WRONG. Rodney admitted, and will tell you or anyone else, that he met one of the producers at a club where he frequents and 'she' asked him to come be interviewed for the show. This is a well-known fact and is commonly understood by anyone paying attention. When attempting to submit a video to the official cbs survivor website I find NO 'list of questions'. AND......that's not the only example I can give. Rich, you do realize this show has been around for some 20 years right? The available information on it is crazy copious, like a ridiculously overwhelming amount of facts to disprove what you're saying. Say it with me Rich: "Google"
