Yep this game looks trickier to climb but is more forgiving with the amount of check points you have. The only part of Getting Over It that would be considered a checkpoint was the small part after the Orange Hill where you have to cross over the floating islands and falling off them doesn't send you to the bottom. Everywhere else in that game is has the potential to send you to the very bottom. At least this game has way more checkpoints.

You know when you're like 8, and "helping" your dad with his project in the garage, or fix the sprinkler system outside, or fix a leaky faucet? And it starts out as fun, you get to see some cool stuff and hold the flashlight. But after y'all are five hours into the project things have devolved... Mark's shouting about reality and explaining monitors "calmly" reminds me of a dad shouting at the project and as a kid you do really know what to do so you just watch the situation awkwardly. So... Keep it up Mark, we'll just all be here holding the flashlight...

It's kinda comforting seeing those familiar patterns he goes to through😊. He gets frustrated and his ADHD kicks in. He'll try the same spot faster and faster with ever lessening focus, until the rage hits, and eventually he calms down again enough to progress again. My favourite Markism is how he fails to spot the most blatantly obvious hints, and starts playing the level/puzzle/sequence all wrong, making everything needlessly difficult. Only to ace it, doing it better than I ever could.

personal theory: whenever you are playing a game or doing something that seems simple but is suddenly very hard; take a step back, evaluate if you are hungry or thirsty. its incredible how much hunger can tank performance. i was very frustrated building a loft bed once, and after 3 hours walked away to eat a sandwich. came back and was able to assemble the part that had been frustrating me in less than 30 minutes. a sandwich made all the difference.

Okay so, for anyone wondering, no there's no RNG. What's actually happening is that the physics is pretty meticulous: every material has a specific friction, and rocks are not at the maximum they're just really high. Too wild a change in momentum will make you slip. On top of that, your momentum is VERY specific. The reason he struggled with the wheel was because he was coming in from too high an angle, making his momentum too fast to grab onto it. tl;dr no there's no rng, the physics are just complex enough to roughly emulate the chaos effect.

I once heard an archer describe the way of learning a skill. You train every day, until the act of shooting an arrow becomes muscle memory and you do it completely by instinct. That's when you start to think about other things, because your mind is free and then you start to notice your mistakes. That moment shatters your instincts and completely breaks your routine. You actually have to start to train the whole process from the beginning, just like an amateur, but you do every movement with complete awareness of what you do and when you reach the point of instinct again, you are a perfect archer.
This entire video is just Mark trying to get past that damn wheel 😭😭

After watching the “I made the game” video for this game. The physics system is the basic Unity friction system… the exact same as Getting Over It. I have no clue where everyone is getting all the “it is exact precise momentum or you slip” as the developer was very open about making it a rage game that uses unity assets and already built in physics system from Unity. The game is you have force on your hands, when you grab it becomes negative force, and everything has different frictions so that grabbing depends on the force you use. But sometimes your hands will wildly have weird large or small force and that probably is giving you the “RNG” feel to it. It also explains why you can just be sitting there doing nothing and move your mouse and suddenly slide, as sometimes you’ll just get a large corresponding negative force on your grabbing hand as it appears to also be associated with mouse movement. The faster or wilder your mouse movements are, the more often the jank in the force will sometimes just slide you. But even going slow, sometimes you’ll still get that large force happen. I’m pretty certain speed runs are going to be figuring out how to maximize the force in your hands to just fly to the top.

Tldr: it's not RNG, it's just basic unity physics. It sure as hell isn't as insanely realistic as some ppl in the comments think though!

"What is hitting?" though this won't help Mark, I'll help an audience member hopefully: the arms are limited in length. If you extend too far, they snap back a little, giving directional momentum from the snapback. Same for the legs and head providing collision and rotational momentum.
