The Panzer 87 Leopard 2 is the Swiss designation of a Swiss licence built Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tank. Pz stands for “Panzer” or rather “tank” in English and the 87 refers to the year deliveries of the first vehicles to the Swiss Army. The licence for the production of 380 vehicles was obtained in 1984. The first 35 vehicles were built-in and supplied by Germany while the rest were built-in Switzerland. Production ceased in 1993.
The Pz 87 Leopard 2 differed from the Leopard 2A4 in that it uses AN/VCR 12 radio sets, has x2 7.5mm Machine Guns (coaxial and Cupola Mounted) and has additional snow grouses on the turrets side.
Another interesting addition to the vehicle is the large circular tubes mounted across the hull rear. These are actually muffler to reduce engine noise in built-up area’s.
A Pz 87 was used during the development phase of the joint KWS III project, to see if a 140mm bore calibre main gun could be installed on the Leopard 2. This would have required changes in the turret to accommodate the larger rounds and autoloader.
A single Pz 87 was fitted with a 140mm main gun, however Germany eventually went with the longer 120mm smoothbore (L55) and the Pz 87 prototype was reverted back to a standard gun tank.
The Pz 87 WE Leopard 2 (Werterhaltung) is the most modern version of the Pz 87. In 2013 the final Pz 87 WE of the 134 upgraded was delivered to the Swiss Army. In 2013 the final Pz 87 WE of the 134 upgraded was delivered to the Swiss Army. Of the remaining original Pz 87, a number have been sold to Canada and Germany. Others have been converted in to Combat Engineer Vehicles and others placed into storage.

@@terrymcconville3659 As far as I know switzerland wasn't the only country that had financial trade during the appeasment policy with nazi germany. Not even mentioning that all credits were lost and never paid back and that all german assets were paid out to the allies through the washington agreement in 1946. They probably also lost a lot of money by mobilizing 600'000 soldier and keeping the economy in a limbo. Not that it even mattered since the world economy collapsed with the outbreak of the war... If you think that switzerland funded WW2 you are a bit insane to be honest, there have been financial credits but so did many allied countries including the US during the appeasment policy. Remember the US didn't enter the war because of germany but japan, the war on germany was just an after effect. The trade with the nazis wasn't a taboo even for countries like the US and others... And even then, granting a credit so switzerland could keep their food import assured seems to be a reasonable action. Better then a mass famine, which wasn't an unlikely scenario.

*Happy swiss tanker noises* Seriously though, if you are interested in tanks and visit Switzerland and happen to be near Thun, the city where the one of the biggest army bases of the swiss army is and all tank related troops such as us tankers, the Panzergrenadiers etc. are trained, there is a small outdoor tank museum where we have each of our own used ones, from the early 35(t), the G20 (basically a Hetzer), the AMX-13, domestically built tanks such as the Panzer 61 and 68, and we even have some that were gifted to us such as a Panzer IV and a Panther, a sherman, T-34, basically every important tank is there. You need to bring your passport and will be accompanied by the local guard if you want in since it is smack in the middle of the army base. I've been told that the tanks would in theory all still work but haven't seen any maintenance or anything since they were put there so they probably wouldn't. Many of the pictures used are from Thun. Four fun facts about our tanks I picked up during my service as a Leopard tanker: -While the Panzer 68 was ergonomically and performance wise pretty bad, the british gun and the turret systems in general had the reputation to be excellent. One of the adjutants training us when I became a sergeant and a tank commander was under the first crews to be trained on the Leopard 2A4, or the Panzer 87. During this time the Leopards were used in secions made up of only three tanks because we had so few, so there were still other units using the Panzer 68. During an experiment it was apparently noted that while the Leopard could shoot on the move and hit moving targets more accurately, overall the 105mm gun of the Panzer 68 was more accurate even at great ranges. -The full name of our Leopards nowadays is "Panzer 87 Leopard 2 WE". We built the 2A4s back in the day ourselves, 380 in total with 35 bought directly from the germans. In 2006 we started an upgrade program aiming to get it on the same level as a Leopard 2A5. Proposed ideas included a remote weapon station for the commander, additional armor, mine protection and many more things. Most of the bigger upgrades were skipped but the really needed ones were kept, such as finally converting the turret from hydraulic to electrical, a new commander sight allowing him to control the entire turret if needed and a bunch of smaller changes including track segments for when there's snow. They pretty much count as a Leopard 2A5 except for one thing and that is the armor which wasn't upgraded. -Of the 380 Leopard 2A4s we upgraded only 134. We sold 94, made 10 into training objects for recovery vehicles, 3 are in museums and 24, 12 each, were converted into other tanks of the type Kodiak (Combat engineering) and Leguan (bride laying). The remaining 96 tanks were put into storage, somewhere in giant bunkers in the swiss alps. A fellow soldier's grandfather recounted a story where one day some Leopards drove past his house into the mountains but never came back. -Small one at the end, in the turret of our tanks there has always been a small step that can we folded up and down, making it way easier for the loader to get in and out and perfect for standing on and pocking the head outside. I've heard that this is a small little quality of life feature that the germans either didn't have until one point after the swiss implemented it or never had. As someone who was trained as a gunner and loader, I am thankful for that small change. If you have any questions, please ask. Except if they are about the 140 mm canon because while I've heard of it before, this video is honestly the most information I heard at once. Also a little personal side note, I am thankful for our still "short" 120mm L/44 gun because how the hell do the germans with the L/55s get around in villages without hitting everything with that barrel?!

Since tank combat is line of sight fire, laser weapons are more likely the next steps. If you are getting into 140, 150+mm guns that is field artillery territory, to keep a relatively low profile, you start hitting limits on number of shells carried. Of course maybe this is less important if your IFV has a 50-90mm gun capable of firing he shells, meaning tanks only focus on anti-tank action.

  • @Bird_Dog00

Not quite. Generaly. "Panzer" is the noun, so "armour" not "armoured". The adjective "armoured" would be "gepanzert" For example, "Armoured personel carrier" does directly translate to "Gepanzerter Mannschaftstransporter" "Kampfwagen" means "combat vehicle" Even tough "Panzer" is the noun and not the adjective, "Panzerkampfwagen" does translates to "armoured combat vehicle" and not "armour combat vehicle" as "Panzer" is used as an adjective in the context of the whole composite word. "Panzer" is just the shorthand. "Main battle tank" translates to "Hauptkampfpanzer" but is generaly shortend to "Kampfpanzer". German is a complicated language ;)

There is footage of some shooting test and with every shot fired there seems to be a lot of recoil, almost like an artillery piece, that might be yet another problem for such caliber.
