Philisophy behind it?.. It's very unique. 1. Indonesia are islands counrty and mostly isolated. Whoever want to attack them, they must bring their vehicles with them. From air or from the sea, mostly they can bring light and amphibious vehicles. And this system enough to be eat all of them. 2. Indonesia has a lot of mountains mountains and unregular urban areas. And all of that areas very rainy. Many big and small rivers divide that territory. Roads are not good. Terrain has a high density of plants. And this vehicle must be survive on that envinronment. Bcs of this it must be little more high than other tanks. (Not low like Japanese Type 16) 3. They want to use this vehicle not only direct fire support role. They also want to do indirect support role if its necessary. And this Cockerill system can do that up to the 18 km. (Like a howitzer) 4. In Indonesia, they have not lot of threats like ATGM's. Even the ppotential enemy bring that, high density trees and plants can be provide very good passive protection. Mostly RPGs and similar unguided systems are very serious threat. But... 5. In European battle theatre, infantry follow the heavy armored punch. Armored systems take the lead on battlefield. But in Indonesia it can not work bcs of nature and combat customs. Infantry fight and armored systems provide fire support behind them. Bcs of that unique philosophy and list of requirements, this different Tank happen. And it has a many potential user in Southeast Asia. Vietnamiese army openly interested this new vehicle already. Kaplan MT is the Turkish name. In indonesian language it name is Harimau. Both of this meanings is Tiger. And also it has a large interior and that feature provide good working environment for the crew. Many system can be add in this tank also in the future. Space and energy source is avaliable. Best regards...

From what I've read, this tanks purpose is to replace the aging AMX 13 and Scorpion tanks of the Indonesian army, while supplementing the Leopard 2RI. After all, Indonesia is a an archipelago with lots of mountain and jungles, so the idea of having a smaller chassis, half the weight of an mbt while carrying a 105mm gun is entertaining.

Yes you're right, because Indonesia is a tropical Nation so most of the terrain will be jungles, hills, rivers, muddy terrains. So it was designed to be a flexible medium tank for hard terrain, the reason it has a high figure is to make it easier when crossing rivers or mud and preventing the tank to drowned. And the purpose of the tank is to support infantries and not a head-on tank vs tank combat

CR BZ Perhaps, but in a forested area, or an area with a lot of hills, it could be useful due to its strong engine, and high speed. And to be honest, I think this would be more maneuverable than Russian designs. And Soviet designs... this is beyond their league. It should be faster, and mounting a better gun. Perhaps less armor, but that is a trade off for the higher speed.

Its going to replace our older tanks like AMX-13 and Scorpion 90. So yeah its designed to be like this. Just think it like Stryker MGS but with tracks. Also here in Indonesia its not wide flat grassy fields of Eastern Europe so spamming MBTs won't work. These boys are here to support Infantry, against IFV, APC, AFV, etc. With luck it could fight an MBT, but i wont advice it. Also fighting older MBTs with the 105mm works-ish, against old tanks like T-62, T-64, and who knows maybe T-72. Just think it like a mobile Anti-Tank gun but with tracks. Its a glass cannon basically.

Once again Indonesia shows it means business I am really impressed with the Indonesian armed forces threat assessment and their willingness to get the best bang for their buck. First it was the purchase of 2 Danish frigate of the iver huitfeldt class (cheap, versatile, low running cost, goes far on a tank of gas) and now its the KAPLAN. The Indonesians definitely knows what they are expecting to face on the battlefield of tomorrow and are willing to stick to their assessments and either develop or buy whats needed to counter that. Just wished more European nations did the same rather then buying wholesale from uncle Sam to appease the US diplomatically.

The way the tank was described and spec'd, it uses standard NATO ammo, which Matsimus and many commentators say is insufficient in a modern anti armor role. Eddie Lane notes that his USMC M60 was armed with a 105mm, but things have changed since the 1980s. That being said, in the role I describe, it is unlikely that it would face a state of the art MBT because they are too heavy for the infrastructure of the AO. A 30 ton vehicle can go many places that a 60-plus ton behemoth simply can't go. The Soviets and Germans lost quite a few tanks to weak bridging in WWII, and U.S. heavy tanks couldn't cross the Rhine until reinforced bridges were in place long after the bridgeheads were consolidated.

Well in overall assumption.. It's the Tiger vs. M4 discussion^^ Every soldier would prefer bigger gun and more protection even if mobility goes a bit down or more. But the reality is, that you can't "spam" MBT's like you could with medium Tanks. You have only 3 to crew it and train before, instead of 4 or 5. You don't need that much of resources to built it. Battlefields are not static and 3 dimensional, so when modern day infantry operated rpgs can destroy mbt in cerctain conditions, what would those be? Ambushes, fast flanking maneuvers, shooting out of fortified positions, snapping on a ridge line and relocate...so all comes down to visibility, mobility and terrain, armor gives you no value at some point (only against relatively small callibers). And the Terrain becomes the point of make or brake. Mbt are bad in cities, they're big compared to the surroundings and have less space to operate. But sometimes you need serious firepower, suppression fast and intimidating. Whole building can be destroyed with 30 or 50 cals yes, but a 10.5 does this to, in one hit not swing. Also it has a smaller profile compared to mbt and a not so much greater as all sort of relatively high armored wheeled vehicles or personal carriers. I for myself would prefer a good medium tank over an mbt, most at the time, and that because of european terrain and the overall rule (trinity of tankdesign gun >mobility> armor). I mean, small bridges, streets, forests, lot of hills, even rocky mountain paths, when wet pretty annoying terrain always, so you want to be lighter, with a lower ground compression, highly mobile but capable to deliver as much force as possible... Is not bad, not at all, mbt also can be disabled (tracked, blinded, engine hit or somply suppressed due to heavy fire). I think the term "medium tank" has to be changed to "main support tank" for that vehicle. In my opinion, the issue is not if it is "on meta" because it is, the issue is how many MST can you crew, produce and train for the cost and time effort compared to one fully fletched MBT and its crew. And in case of a war, getting faster and easier firepower to the troops is always good... So I like this trend, if it is one, I would'nt wonder when it becomes one again.

Well , to be honest .... Those leopard 2 were putted in an akward position for the indonesian army guys . We were aware on the plus side of the equations yet it was too big , obscure , tend to bogged down a lot in harsh terrains and long list of logistical footprints . Hence , this where the concept comes out again . And after a very carefuly calculated and calibrated for an ideal tanks coverages for the equator it was decided that we need at least 887 minimums and 1230 for an ideal number to be spread around as a compliment of 350 + of MBT's ( we allready have 90+ so it was definite to add some more ) . Mind you that i haven't include an IFV and APC ( based on the same chasis and hull ) numbers in the equation.. So , why don't we makes our own AFV then ? The number do justified the endeavour anyway ..

I can imagine that, basically that is what I mean in the first place. Why bothering with a bigger weapon, that must be covered in better logistics and is not really suited for the terrain anyway and must be bought from outside.. The best alternative is, the one that every country is really capable of and makes in their equation sense. As I said, I like this Idea hands down :)

It's easy to underestimate this type of tool. You cannot airlift any of the mbt today. It takes weeks to ship transport a battalion of M1s today. These can be placed on scene in a matter of hours. Also most MBT cannot work in cities without destroying all the infrastructure. Most conflict s occuring today are in an urban setting. This vehicle can easily tolerate most battalion size weapons unlike the light tanks. The 105mm high explosive round can settle most disputes and even though this medium tank is not designed to confront the MBT s, it can carry and fire the depleted uranium SABOT round which can seriously damage or destroy many of the MBT s today. Alot of people laught when the light Sheridan first showed up on the scene, but no one laughed when it fired it's huge 155mm or it's wire guided Shelyla 2 mile missile. People also laught at the Merkava. That is until they mounted the Rhinmetal softbore 120mm. All these tools are perfect if used tactically and with wisdom. Al...eng.

No, it cannot withstand even infantry company level anti-tank weapons like modern RPG warheads, 84 CG, or similar. They will damage or disable this vehicle. But this is not to say that this is not a good vehicle. Even an MBT may be damaged or disabled by infantry anti-tank weapons as the war in Syria and earlier IDF incursion into Lebanon has shown. This is a game changer when you consider that what Indonesia will likely face in an internal conflict will be insurgents with no AFV of any kind. Or in the case of an invasion from e.g. Australia, the invader can only bring light armor at first.

I think one of the reasons for picking this over something with an auto cannon is that in psychological warfare. In Iraq the M1 cleared out insurgents faster than the Bradley, despite the Bradley being more effective in engagements. Great video as always man!

Yep definately, Indonesia faces many "internal" issues and one of these showing up with a 105mm would almost certainly put a dampner on "activities" also the ability to lob 105 HE into remote vallies 18km away makes this a very useful adition to the security forces an easily deployable force multiplier that saves lives both of the security forces and of potential insurgents by ending things before they begin.

I think your understating its roll. These types of tanks arnt necessarily meant to take on main battle tanks like the M1 or Challenger, but to be a heavier infantry support vehicle and mobile firepower base. Similar to what the M8 MGS system in the 90s was supposed to be. A lighter vehicle for specific roles or places in the world. Honestly something the US and UK should look at adding for mobile (airdropped) firepower vehicle to secure a beachhead/area while heavy firepower is brought in.

Thank you for the Objective analysis, Matsimus. Had been watching your video since a year or two and I found it impressive. This tank has a HUGE INDONESIAN BIAS. Some biases even said that this thing can even out other tanks. Your analysis confirms what I believe to be true: This tank is unique in itself because 105 mm is obsolete for engaging other armour, and it is best to stay in light or medium roles. Tanks like these are considered obsolete because they are replaced by IFVs with ATGMs like what you said. However, this tank is not battle-proven. It should be put to test someday.

Wow this is definitely a new branch from the the usual US and Russian vehicles you used to reviewed.. Thanks Mat for reviewing this unique tank from my country. This tank model is certainly nothing new, but very uncommon in this era where MBT rules the tank market. With the armamament of 105mm cannon, 7.62mm coax, and pretty thin armour, this vehicle looks more like a tracked IFV than a tank by current standard.. However, I think it is suitable to be used here in Indonesia, if not most of South East Asian countries due to it lighter weight (Here in Indonesia, there are many bridges over rivers that are often too small/weak to support crossing MBTs). And also it should become a great replacement to our aging French AMX tanks from the 60s/70s...

You know, in places like Bangladesh, where heavy tanks with more than 60 tons weight are just a huge target, these can be extremely effective. Soil here is so soft that any modern day MBT gets stranded. Tracks stop moving, the tank just digs itself into the ground. This is the sole reason why we can't use T-90s and other ultra modern tanks and have to stick with Chinese crap or keep upgrading old Soviet tanks. This is both a good and a bad news. Good news is, any incoming enemy calvary is totally welcome to get stranded and be used as a target board (which has happened before. It didn't end well for the enemies). The bad one is, we can't use heavy armour backup. We use MBT-2000s, they are good, still too heavy that it's useless in most parts of the country. So we've been using upgraded T-69s a lot.

This seems like it would be perfect in Asia, the south east islands where any invasion would have tanks that are too heavy for local infrastructure, but anything light enough would be outmatch by the Kaplan MT

Research the CMI - Cockerill Defense 3105 turret. It's modular, and can easily be upgraded and integrated with 4x (2 double launchers each side) Spike, Javelin, TOW-3, even Brimstone. The 105mm gun has the right punch for direct CS HE, squash heads for bunkers, and APFSDS will still take out pretty much all vehicles short of MBT, which the optional LP90mm HEAT also can do. Both the 105 and 90mm guns can fire Falarick ATGM variants as well. The air assault feature for this hunter/killer AFV is what really opens up the operational capabilities for marine and airborne forces. I'm curious about its' indirect fire possibilities with rocket assisted guided shells.

Philippines is buying some of these MT's. It's very suitable to our country actually. With its light weight ( compared to other tanks ) it can cross our bridges and won't do much damage on our low quality roads. After the Marawi siege, our armed forces saw the need for fire support vehicles and the Harmaw Hitam ( Black Cat/Black Panther ) could fill that role. This tank is close to perfect to our needs.

Contextually, Indonesia will probably never fight a conventional war against any major power. Military doctrine here is shaped by experiences in fighting the Dutch for independence through guerrilla warfare (one of the first army chiefs of staff wrote a whole book about guerrilla warfare, which an observer commented was like 'Mao without the politics'). After that it was informed by a lot of counter-insurgency ops against rebellious army officers and separatist groups (with one long fight against pro-independence guerrillas in Timor-Leste), some of which continue today. The Kaplan, like you said, is well-suited for Indonesia (we do have leopards, but I feel like we'll get a lot more bang for our buck with the MT rather than those). My best argument against not having it on a lighter vehicle, other than protection, is that the sight of a tank-like vehicle like this is prolly more likely to scare the shit out of insurgents rather than an APC/IFV.

Our northern sea has been claimed by china as their traditional fishing zones if these man made islands keep unimpeded they will push to southern parts to secure malacca strait or kra channel in thailand which they want to build to undermine Singapore and his western allies over hegemony in south east asia and Malacca strait.

phirdaws ady this is true, but even if we end up fighting against China, we won’t challenge them in a conventional sense, we’re quite ill equipped to do that. The whole structure of the Indonesian military today, with military commands that go down all the way to villages is designed to either: observe/oppress elements that the military considers to be subversive or anti-nationalist, or to mobilise the populace to fight in a guerrilla conflict a la 1945-1949.

The main reason for this tank invention is to replace Indonesian Army ageing fleet of AMX-13 also due to Indonesia's terrain (a lot of jungle, mountains, swamps and river) so it makes sense why they wanted a lighter tank than an MBT like Leopard 2.
