Challenger 2 Tank "Black Night" | MODERN UPGRADE

Ғылым және технология

The Challenger 2 Life Extension Project (LEP) is a British MoD contract to remove obsolescence from Challenger 2 and extend its out-of-service date by ten years to 2035. As well as removing obsolescence, there will be the opportunity to make further capability enhancements. The upgraded tank will be referred to as Challenger 2 Mark 2. The prototype has been displayed at DVD 2018, painted in black to justify its nickname: “Black Knight”.
BAE Systems launched Team Challenger 2, a major strategic partnership with other world-leading defense companies to bid for the LEP Assessment Phase contract. Upgrades to address the Challenger 2’s obsolescence by Team Challenger 2 are as follows: a new thermal imaging system allowing the Challenger 2 to acquire targets at night as quickly as it currently can in daylight.
This is great new for Challenger 2.
Hope you enjoy!!

My thoughts, Its essential. We are at the point now that tandem warhead guided missiles are becoming a common thing even in third world armys. Tanks can no longer rely on reactive armour + chobham to be protected. At the minimum all western tanks should be adopting hard kill defensive systems as soon as is realistically possible.

This Upgrade is really impressive, but I am also very eager to see what Rheinmetall's Upgrade will look like. I'd really love some Design choices from the Leopard mbt Revolution to influence their proposal for the Challenger 2.

Matsimus don't take this the wrong way but a polished turd is still a turd. The Challenger 2 was an obscelecent design from the beginning built for a style of warfare that was woefully out of date. Its disappointing to see the MoD of Great Britain double down on a poor design rather than seeking to at least put the money in to make them compatible with the NATO logistical system and look into new more future proof designs.

In regards to the Engine, I think the rest of the drive-train would obviously have to be considered in any Engine Replacement or Performance Increase, mostly in regards to maintenance, reliability, fuel consumption etc, not that It would necessarily be problematic (a boilerplate development procedure) Active Defensive Systems are a must, as even in the absence of modern anti-armor weapons, crack marksmanship against small, unprotected areas of vehicles has sometimes paid substantial dividends, possibly the earliest example being the destruction of 2 of the Ironclad Ram C.S.S. Virginia's 10 guns by the Wooden hulled, Sail-only Sloop of War U.S.S. Cumberland (Commissioned 11/9/1842) at the first day of the Battle of Hampton Roads (3/8/1862) despite the feat involving firing smooth-bore muzzle-loading guns from the pitching deck of a sailing ship, aimed with rope, pry-bars, elevation thread, and quadrant at the gun-port hatches of a moving Ironclad, whilst they happen to be open long enough to roll out, aim, and fire shells at the broadside of a wooden ship in return. Ultimately after multiple hours of gunnery, and the death/injury of 55% of the Cumberland's Crew, the Virginia was finally able to sink the Cumberland by ramming, but in doing so took substantial damage and was thus unable to decisively ram the Ironclad U.S.S. Monitor the second day of the battle, the precious few hours bought forcing Virginia to fall back to deeper waters to prevent running aground with the tide, and with it saving the Union Fleet and making the Monitor's soon to be legendary duel inevitable, and with it the threat to the blockade and potentially even Washington D.C. duly neutralized.

No matter what other upgrades are implemented, there needs to be the permanent addition of a nice thick slab of Dorchester on the lower front plate for the driver. For goodness sake, he's only got 1200 hp and no new, fancy gadgets to work with - the man deserves a brick of Burlington, a chunk of Chobham.

Re the powerpack; the MOD always intended that MBT80 had a 1500 bhp version of the cv12. it was derated because the Treasury demanded a longer service life for the packs in order to save money. It's my understanding that one option for the LEP programme is to give the cv12 a common rail injection system which will boost output to over 1500 hp. For me the biggest weakness is the transmission not the engine. C2 has six forward gears, the lowest being a crawler gear. This is because the C2 shares it's transmission with the CRAARV, which needs an ultra low first gear for pulling power rather than acceleration. C1 had four forward gears and better "take off" than c2 because of this. The six speed box seems to have trouble generating enough torque at low revs which hinders acceleration. Two solutions; increase the torque /improve the final drives so the power comes in with less delay, or fit a new transmission.

Much of the choices made for Challenger 2 were for commonality reasons. Imagine the logistical nightmare of fielding CR 1, CR 2 and CRARRV all with different engines and transmissions. @@thewomble1509 CR2 was developed with the intent of serving alongside CR1. The end of the cold war meant that never happened. There is a historical precedent: When the T-64/65 was to expensive the Russians started production of the T-72, which was an all right tank, but nothing more - and a budget decision. These tanks have gone under upgrade after upgrade to the point of making them immobile. If the Russians have to shift their very few survivable tanks along the long boarder that will leave some pretty darned gaping holes elsewhere where the antiques are. The Russians are not going to use nukes - because they know that Sct. Petersburg will be oblitterated before lunch (lets hope for a westerly wind - most common in the area). Not only that, but they will not achieve any military objective, as the tanks are under way at sea.

T-72 turned out to be better than T-64 and in some versions T-80 in many areas. T-72B having the best turret armour out of everything before T-80BU. The "antiques" were giving western tank fanboys panic attacks when they found out old ass antique EG T-72 could stand up to their "silver bullet" with Kontakt-5 ERA. Fyi upgrades also included engine. T-72B3 is currently a much lighter(nearly 20t lighter) tank than Chally2 while having similar horsepower.

I dont understand why everyone is clamouring for an entirely new tank. Upgrading an existing platform can push it's service life by decades whilst letting it remain a competitive tank and is much cheaper than developing an entirely new platform. Look at the T-72, the original was outdated 5 years into it's lifespan, so they improved it, making the T-72A series that remained on -par with Western designs until the early 80's. Then the various T-72B's, including the the model 87 and model 89 both remained only slightly worst than the Leopard 2's and the 105mm Abrams. The M1IP and Leopard 2A4 both otuclassed the T-72B's, so once again the Russians upgraded it to the T-72BU (T-90) which continued to be improved upon, with the T-90A, T-90S and T-90MS which both were on-par when they were introduced. Even today the original T-72's from 1971 are given just small modifications into the T-72B3M which are on par with most western tanks in service, and that's just a small upgrade. The Challenger 2 can also follow this path, making small adjustments and improvements over many years whilst remaining competitive, all at a fraction of the cost of developing an entierly new platform. Thats why the T-14 Armata failed, and the russians decided to keep going with the T-90's. The UK can learn from others.

  • @jonny2954

    @jonny2954

You can't compare the CR2 with the T-72 in terms of modularity and life expectancy. You can't even compare it to other NATO MBTs in that matter. The UK wants to relieve the CR2 in the 2030s, it would be 36+ years old by then. However Abrams and Leopard 2 users also plan on relieving their MBTs in the 2030, making them 50+ and 51+ years old respectively. They have a ~14/15 year longer life expectancy. The most comparable NATO MBT to the CR2 in terms of age would be the Leclerc, but they want to keep it in service til the 2040s not the 2030s, making it 49+ years old by then, giving it a ~13 year longer life expectancy. Now, the T-72 is topping all of that. It is expected to service at least to the 2030s like its NATO counterparts, making it impressive 58+ years old at the time of retirement! The T-72BU (T-90) might last even longer.

Armata is not only a T-14 tank, but a platform for new systems. You confuse pre-production samples and those that will be transferred to the army. UVZ stated that: T-14 will be produced in parallel with the repair of T-72B, modernization of T-80B and T-80U, T-90A. This is done by different enterprises. As long as the Armata platform does not occupy all niches of use. Why not make it fast? Because it is not a game or comics. It takes years. Few people are able to realize a similar scale. These are not 200 and not 500 tanks, they are thousands of units of equipment, not only tanks. This work has been done since the mid-80s (Project 299). And now gives its fruits) Yes, the 152mm module is ready. But it will have another cipher, not T-14. There are many specialized machines.

And if its still cheaper to update rather than replace then they could easily end up going for another 10 years.

Hmm... apart from the natural process of getting rid of outdated parts and replacing them - OK. But seriously: There is not any signs that the Russians are able to come up with anything that really can be a challenge to what Nato allready have. The problem is really Germany that has sold their large stock of Leopard 2 - at firesale prices. There might be some idea in putting a sexy french turret on the Leopard 2 chassis - getting rid of some of the German overdesign. Even if Russia is able to come up with something substantially better than what they have at the moment: It is a no starter. Russia simply can't afford it. Besides the point: What the russians really fear is that the army realizing they are in for a short and very bloody carreer - well then they just might turn their tanks around and replace the management, as they have done so often before. If we see the Baltic area with the formation of a divisional command and heavy tanks from Norway, Denmark and Canada (40-50) a piece then a divisional reserve from GB with a similar number will be able not only to deal with the pitifull tatters that might limber through the main forces but also will be able to smash back in a counterattack that threaten to cripple Putins constituency. Historical evidence informs them, that an assault will incur casualties Russia today cannot afford - much less is likely to be able to aquire. No this seems to be the sensible proposition: Take the Challenger 2 and tart it up a bit put some new periscopes on it. With a nice supply of replacements, because - as You say - they are the pieces that are liable to break when the arguments turn nasty.

The problem for the Russians is that they do not have the troops to use that tactic any more. We saw how they got butchered in Chechetnia. Another point is: Stalin could use the tactic, but Putin cannot, as the army is on the verge of mutiny! You saw that at the invasion of Ukraine they pulled out a battallion just before the invasion (and apparently replaced it with a local defence battallion that ran out of fuel). The entire officer corps in Khaliningrad (Königsberg) was fired - indubitably to incompetence. Ineptitude is as serious as disloyalty. Not that our side is without mongs among officers. A lot has been written about the T-14 braking down at the rehearsal of the parade. Whether it was mechanical malfunction or driver incompetence is immaterial: They could not even practise a parade! The other thing is: We are talking Nato now! If they try their grabbing technique in Bulgaria there is nothing to stop a counterpunch against Sct. Petersburg - and THAT is Putins constituency. As to the nukes? 1. How many of them work - agreed 1 is enough. 2. How can they control them from going rogue? I mean: A nuke for Moscow fired from the suburb? The point is that Russia is collapsing and the trick is to make it so slow that the butchery does not spill over in our pumpkin-patch.

How is the Challenger 2 classed as an MBT when it cannot survive a hit to its under glacis plate, surely it would be classed a Tank Destroyer as it fights long range and uses cover to hide its weak lower plate. I'm not trying to offend the tank or the people that enjoy it, in my opinion its one of the best looking MBT's for sure (and in black it looks insane), but compared to an M1 Abrams - a true MBT - the Challenger 2 seems more like a Tank Destroyer. Just curious why its classed as an MBT.

In areas of combat the Challenger 2 is already fitted with a block of Dorchester composite for the lower glacis plate.

Hey matsimus, do you know if they put composite armour on the challengers 2 lower plate or is it still a 76mm plate? I know they also installed era blocks on the plate but that's not much help against apfsds

it's so much worth it, even the American's are upgrading the Abrams tank until a new tank platform is finally decided, only the brass knows when unless your Russian then you'll rush in and build some overpriced tank that's outdated before it rolls off the production line needing upgrades anyway.
