The Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank | BRITISH FUTURE TANK

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A major upgrade of the British Army’s main battle tank featuring extra firepower and cutting-edge protection systems will ensure the UK remains at the forefront of tank design, poised to respond to future global threats and challenges.
Challenger 3 - the British Army's new main battle tank is coming
A contract with Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) to deliver 148 Challenger 3 tanks will extend the platform’s out of service date to 2040. It will provide 200 skilled jobs at RBSL, including 130 engineers and 70 technicians. A further 450 jobs will be established throughout the wider supply chain across the West Midlands, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne and the Isle of Wight.
It will offer export opportunities and will support the case for the UK participation in any future international tank programmes.
The overhaul will include:
-a new 120mm smoothbore gun which uses the most advanced globally available ammunition
-a new suite of sights providing tank commanders with enhanced day and night targeting abilities
new modular armour
an active protection system
-a turret that can be fitted to the tanks of allies and global partners
The UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) James McGeary said: “Key design changes on the Challenger 3 provide a growth path to further increase the already enhanced lethality offered. These growth options will ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of Main Battle Tank design and can adapt and respond to future threats and challenges.”
Today’s main battle tank is threatened by more systems than ever before, and this has led the UK to develop a new, modular armour that will defeat even the most demanding of threats.
As part of the Challenger 3's layered protection, the fleet will also be the first to receive the best active protection system (APS) allowing it to recognise incoming threats and neutralise them. The tank will undergo full electromagnetic testing to ensure it is survivable in the most demanding of sensor saturated battlefields.
The world leading new modular armour has been developed through advances in armour technology provided by the in-house Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) funded armour expertise held within Dstl. This Dstl owned Intellectual Property (IP) has generated significant interest and is being exploited through the close links Dstl has with MOD and Industry.
Challenger 3 will lead NATO armoured forces with the highest levels of lethality and survivability on the battlefields of today and out to 2040. It achieves this not only by using the new gun, but also by making use of the most advanced ammunition available globally from our allies.
The new suite of sights gives the tank commander an independent day / night all weather hunter killer capability, which allows them to acquire and engage targets quicker than potential adversaries.
The tank has also been designed to play its part in multi-domain warfare whilst retaining the ability to operate in the littoral environment (between the land and sea) in support of the Future Commando Force.
Challenger 3 will be fitted with a digitized backbone connecting it to the other combat vehicles that make up the fighting Brigade, enabling data sharing across domains to deliver information advantage and enable multi domain Integration and an edge over adversaries.
With its modular design, it offers operational commanders an enhanced survivability suite capable of taking on any battlefield threats that it is likely to encounter across the world.
All in all, the British Army’s new and improved Main Battle Tank will pack a real punch and represents a major generational upgrade in capability. It will be Defence’s only 24 hour, all-weather, mobile, protected, precision, direct fire, anti-armour maneuver capability - and will be critical to Defence’s ability to deliver hard power, underpinning our credibility in the land domain and underwriting our commitments to our allies.
Hope you enjoy!!

Hope you enjoyed the video. Few things: - I don’t care that music made by Russians is used to introduce a British tank. Stop overthinking things. - the rumour of Italy and Spain was meant to be more of a joke than anything as they hate the UK from Brexit. It was a meme. - the rifled gun WAS a good gun, not still is. -yes I wanted the 130mm also but we know why they didn’t

Internet rumors say Rheinmetall is working on a new 120mm L55a2 for Leo II AX. With same muzzle energy as the proposed French 140mm(14Mj) . If it works as planned there won't be a need for the 130mm (19.5Mj) for quite a while. And retrofitting a new improved 120mm into the new CH3 turret is easy.

Tbf, the UK is buying like 600 Ajax (250 of them turreted), which is a pretty substantial fleet of vehicles; its not surprising they are dropping the Warriors. The Boxer is also taking up a lot of roles; and mind that the turreted boxer can actually be as heavy as an Ajax, its one of the new type of huge 8x8s. A bit more concerning is the limited number of Challys being upgraded; just 150 while eg Germany is increasing its Leo 2 count to over 300. But I guess thats just the UK; they focus on the Navy, not the armed forces. Thats why the Chally 2 was neglected in the first place.

Actually the reason why they would boost space in the turret is likely because the M1A3 is going to be using a 120mm ETC Cannon which will likely become the standard of NATO design. The reason for this is because while people were looking at upgrading the NATO design to be something closer to 130 or 140 mm the fact of the matter is that that reduces your ammo capacity immensely so it was immediately shot off the table. ETC Cannons fix that in that they actually provide more firepower than a 140mm upgrade would grant, but without increasing your shell size.

Challenger 3 looks very impressive, shame we're only getting 148 but I suppose war in the traditional sense is going out of fashion and it's a lot better than no tanks at all! I wonder if it will get the newer DM73 round or stick with the current DM63A1?

the current generation of german APFSDS is DM53, DM63 has only a very limited rollout, DM73 is not in developement right now. but considering when Cr3 will enter service, DM73 may be already the standart ammunition and the RHM120 L/55a1 might have reached its peak too

Zhufor TheImpaler wrong. DM63/DM63A1 is the standard KE Round for the L55 gun. And a lot of them have been delivered. Germany has a contract for another 200k 120mm rounds of all types with Rheinmetall. DM73 is already in testing at WTD91, so it will come online in the next years. And DM73 won‘t be the peak for L55a1 aswell, since KE2020Neo is being developed for it.

Field artillery is still used a lot, I imagine you mean specifically direct fire cannons like the german WW2 PAKs? I kinda doubt it, those types of field cannon arent very mobile and vulnerable to artillery/air strikes. With modern recoinaissance technology and precision strikes, I'd imagine those emplacements would be quite vulnerable. I could see smaller tank destroyers become more popular again, if missiles struggle to defeat APS equipped vehicles. But mind that APS only is required because missiles are so insanely effective in the first place.

@@kochiyoshi missiles are expensive and bulky (and you don't really get 'dumb' missiles, thats called a rocket) this makes it hard for anything to use several as even dedicated missile carrier vehicles carry very few missiles... APS might not be able to handle too many missiles (haveing limited 'shots') but it is unlikely that any unit would have the ability to overwhelm the systems of an attacking tank unit, atleast not with missiles and not quickly enough to avoid being pumelled. missiles are extremely undesirable as anti-tank weapons in general, we used them as they *were* better than the alternatives for the weight and recoil, but with top-attack mortar/artillery systems becoming available combined with reduced chance of missiles being effective while remaining significantly more expensive than said anti-tank mortar and aritllery rounds and well i think missile systems are going to become obsolete (infact i think they are already)

So very few countries have the capability to deploy a proper armored brigade. It is not something that can be conjured up when hostilities seem imminent. This decision will mean the UK retains the engineers and industry required for such a specialized piece of military hardware and also the tactical ability to employ and use such equipment for warfighting. Along with the homegrown ability to build high-end fighter aircraft and Naval combatants, they demonstrate the power and reach of a major global power. I can not imagine a Labour Govt in the UK would have authorized the building up of UK naval forces(let alone 2 carrier strike groups) along with supporting a major increase in the ground fighting ability of the Army that these new tanks will provide. With the current situation involving the increasing threat of the Chinese PLA I for one am very glad our Conservative govt in Australia made the decision to buy and operate the F35 JSF which has now provided the RAAF with cutting edge firepower in our region. Also if you plonked any other mbt in that position it could have also got that range kill. It has nothing to do with the tank than the geography and the gunnery of the crew. The lower plate on the Challanger definitely isn't a good thing, but it's far too late and/or costly to do a major overhaul on the hull, especially the lower plate, one of the least likely spots to be hit in an engagement. Ah yes, the co-development between France and Germany to create unified design that both countries kind of want to make and use. There was still some debate or rumors floating that it is unsure whether that will be the thing, or that Germany will create Leopard 3. I forgot if Spain was on this too, or that was on a helicopter(?), already forgot, but some other future vehicle had three countries planned to be involved in development, can't remember if it was a next gen jet, tank, or helicopter. But I know for sure that there are talks about designing co-developed and funded tank between France and Germany to replace Leclerc and Leopard tanks, but not a hybrid version as far as I have read, just a replacement for both that both countries can use and ease up the costs of development and maintenance in future. It does sound like a solid plan to co-develop, just like Tiger helicopter and Eurofighter jet. I think more of such co-development should be done within Europe, that way there can be actual standards made, thus easing up the costs for each country that participates for manufacturing parts and shells.

Nobody can predict the speed of technological advancements be it new metal alloys/compounds for better/stronger armour or all the computers and optics that goes inside the tank itself. its always a case of playing catch up and this problem is exacerbated by all the cuts to the UK Military Budget since 2010. Not that the MoD is an absolute saint when it comes to spending taxpayers money. They have been known to pile millions into projects that have been in development or in research since then 1980s and are totally obsolete.
