From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted,” “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey”), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer, Ed Mercer, and Adrianne Palicki (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”) as his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson, who’s assigned as his First Officer. Additional cast members include Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn (“24,” “The Larry Sanders Show”), Scott Grimes as Gordon Malloy (“ER,” “Justified”), Peter Macon as Bortus (“Shameless,” “Bosch”), Halston Sage as Alara Kitan (“Neighbors,” “Goosebumps”), J. Lee as John LaMarr (FAMILY GUY, “The Cleveland Show”), Mark Jackson as Isaac (“That Royal Today”) and Chad L. Coleman as Klyden (“The Walking Dead,” “The Wire”). The Orville has been renewed for a second season.

    They also pay a special homage to Star Trek this season by filming some scenes on the front steps of the Starfleet Academy in the new Trek flicks (CSUN campus library, Northridge), I was there the day they shot all day few months ago. Was awesome to see them up close and in costumes and everything, can't wait to see that episode and the rest as well.

    I've just watched both seasons and was impressed. The comedy works to make the characters seem more realistically flawed than if it had taken itself too seriously. Beyond that, the mind-bending speculations, ethical challenges, effects, design and music all make it a fantastic addition to the now neglected sub-genre of forward-looking science fiction.

    It's nice to see writers like MacFarlane, Goodman and the cast being proud and fully invested into a show like The Orville. You can really feel it when you watch the episodes, they care about the characters, its universe and they respect the people who watch the show. That's the kind of thing that is really missing in STD and the Disney Star Wars movies.

    I have to say, this show is growing on me. I found it a bit off-putting at first, which I now attribute to my unfamiliarity with the format but a friend sang its praises and so I gave it a chance. Interesting moments gave me hope and I began to see that it wasn't all buffoonery, that there were some serious issues tackled as well and that balanced out the lighter stuff. It seems to be finding its sea legs so to speak, this season and I am looking forward to the evolution of this journey that it's taking us on. I could wish for more female characters but that's a minor point. Anyway, I'm glad to see that for this video, they cut out that embarrassing stripper move on the table of Penny Johnson's. It was pandering to the lowest common denominator and just inappropriate for a public event. It honestly made me wonder if something had been ingested that affected her judgement. It's nice to see the easy back and forth banter of the actors and other people involved in the production. It inevitably transfers to the show itself and makes for a better viewing experience for the fans :-)

    No contest at any rate. STD is still on only on a pay-for-view streaming network, not a traditional network. There's a lot fewer people seeing that show to begin with than Orville! FYI, I'm saying this as someone who DOESN'T like what he's seen of STD (which is a bad acronym!). Now, I don't care for MacFarlane, either, but other people are obviously seeing something in this show (which I haven't seen to be honest... I don't have cable TV, I don't want. There isn't enough content that would make me want to go back to that!).

    I LOVE the show. Could you please hire actors for their skill, and not because they're a certain race? You went out of your way to hire non-white actors, when 80% of your audience is white males. The age of PC is over. Get with the times. TV shows for mainly black audiences don't go out of their way to hire white people, why do you in the reverse scenario? (Please don't try to argue that the audience for this show isn't overwhelmingly white. It's probably more than 80%, as with most sci-fi shows.)

  • @Sinekyre14

    @Sinekyre14

    To clarify, my point is that you're discriminating against white actors, as black actors are less than 5% of the ones who show up for auditions. Yet you have 40% black actors. Isn't that... immoral?

There are plenty of white people interspersed throughout the show equally among everyone of color. This show is pretty diverse.

    1) A show is cast before it has an audience. So regardless of what percentage of the audience is a certain race is completely invalid because that audience can't watch the show until after it's been filmed and broadcast. 2) Why do you think the actors weren't hired for their skill?
