From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted,” “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey”), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer, Ed Mercer, and Adrianne Palicki (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”) as his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson, who’s assigned as his First Officer. Additional cast members include Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn (“24,” “The Larry Sanders Show”), Scott Grimes as Gordon Malloy (“ER,” “Justified”), Peter Macon as Bortus (“Shameless,” “Bosch”), Halston Sage as Alara Kitan (“Neighbors,” “Goosebumps”), J. Lee as John LaMarr (FAMILY GUY, “The Cleveland Show”), Mark Jackson as Isaac (“That Royal Today”) and Chad L. Coleman as Klyden (“The Walking Dead,” “The Wire”). The Orville has been renewed for a second season.

Reminds me of a Voyager episode where an inhabited planet had a tachyon core and was out of sync with the rest of spacetime. One day for them occurred about every 1.03 seconds of Normal time. The crew literally watched the go from the stone age to bronze age in just a few hours. It was an interesting watch. Episode name was "Blink Of An Eye"

The Orville writers used that Voyager episode plus the multi-dimensional phasing planet that Jadzia tried to stay on in DS9 plus the TNG Mintakan episode where there's risk of Picard becoming a god to the primitive culture the Federation is trying to observe. Plus the statute is reminiscent of Jayne's in Firefly. They really rounded the scifi bases with this one.

That one had a more valid setup as what happened here was a single, isolated incident that shouldn't have had such an impact on the planet's people. Whereas in the Voyager episode the ship was stuck in orbit over the planet for a thousand years - by the natives' perspective - maintaining a long-standing presence in their lives.

The streaming services have really compartmentalized access. You can no longer count on syndication to eventually make the shows available to all and the decreasing demand for DVD's will soon remove the home DVD avenue. Aside from subscribing to multiple streaming services, the future is bleak for the consumer unless the pay per show model that KZread and Google play have takes off but I can see Disney holding onto it's vault mentality and keeping demand high by only infrequently allowing access is bad news for us viewers but at least new episodes might continue to be funded even if access will be sporadic and expensive.

Now it's remembered fondly and used to condemn the new thing. In twenty years, the same thing will happen to Discovery and Picard, as they are remembered through the lense of nostalgia and used to hate on the unfamilliar. Nothing changes.

The inhabitants of their extra-planetary colonies will be left behind by those who live in their homeworld. Even if they become a post-scarcity society, they'd eventually run out of resources just on their own planet. Perhaps even before they reach that point of their evolution (if that's really where evolution goes). In the end they only have a window of 11 days every 700 years to gather resources beyond their planet.

I'm all caught up now. some of the humor bothered me a little. and I don't find him to be the best captain, atleast what I view a captain would be, but that could be because I am holding him the to standard that is picard. But I read in an interview that he planned on toning the humor down a little which I think will be be a positive thing. all in all, it is the star trek that I know, love, and miss. Better than the STD CBS gave America lol and honestly, Seth McFarlane has become one of my favorite people for this.

Super late response, but they'd only be a threat to the Orville's universe if they master control over time itself, because any ships they send out only have a short period of time to act before they are stranded in the Orville's universe and unable to return home, and by the time the planet reappears their society may be radically different and might have even completely forgotten about their ships and their mission. Anything that flies away during the re-emergence risks throwing itself out of existence for a purpose that the people who sent it out for will never get to benefit from. Logically speaking, they would focus only in their own universe and not The Orville's as there's too much risk for very little gain to send ships out during the re-emergence.

This episode is a bit derivative of ST Voyager S6E12, "Blink of an Eye". It's done very well here but the the space-time differential concept was done first in ST Voyager. Both episodes are quite good.

True enough - but it mixes with equally great "Who Watches The Watchers" from TNG. And in opposition to those two, has darker tone (though listenting to first radio message to Voyager from primitve radio on time dilated planet was... heart wrenching).

They’ve touched on this in trek before. Apparently in TOS per the comments. I think TNG had one episode and I know Voyager did too with the “skyship” episode which also had a weird planet too. Ds9 technically had fake Gods with the “prophets” but I think that might be different.
