No mourning for Mikis; he's got a fantastic company up there are waiting for him; the three most prominent Greek poets (two of them Nobel prize winners) the work of whose he immortalized through his music (Seferis, Elytis, Ritsos), the great Nikos Kazantzakis, whose Alexis Zorbas gave Mikis the inspiration to write his syrtaki, one of the most memorable and recognizable pieces in the history of music, his good and beloved friend, and one of the best (maybe THE best) performers of his music, Grigoris Bithikotsis, his fellow freedom fighters from his guerrilla days (because Mikis was also a warrior and a member of the resistance during the German occupation of Greece).

Όμως η μεγαλειώδης μουσική του με τους όμορφους ελληνικούς ήχους θα μείνει για πάντα, όπως και οι αναμνήσεις μας από αυτό το μεγάλο παιδί της Ελλάδας. More than a million serbs used to live in what is now Greece around Thessaloniki , Macedonia and Larissa or Lerin, Thessaly , and Peloponessis …..They were forced to assimilate among them was Serboljub or Sorba who greeks could not pronounce his name and became Zorba the Greek . RIP theodorakis but this song is composed by George Zambetas. Mikis just stolen as many other Greek music masterpieces!!!! Thanks also to great Manos Chatzidakis (awarded with OSCAR ) , Mikis never awarded abroad. Only by Soviet Union after order by Greek Communist Party (KKE)!

A prime example of confidence and self esteem. The day when life stops smiling at you remember Zorbas and his philosophy for life. Risk everything and have zero expectations.

Every time I hear this, I get up and start showing my dancing skills! Thanks to a classmate of mine who taught me how to dance Sirtaki! Greetings from Bulgaria, brothers! 🇧🇬❤️🇬🇷

This was a moment for the ages. The wonderful Sirtaki a music a dance unimaginably beautiful , composed by the genius Mikis Theodorakis , by a movie based on a novel by one of the greatest novelist of the 20th century , starred by one of the greatest actors of all times , Anthony Quinn. Memorable time.

Yes it takes one back to the more innocent times of the late 60s early 70s. Great film and Mike’s outlived both of the stars here, Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates.

I live in Bristol, R.I. where Anthony Quinn and his last wife chose to live and raise their two children who both now must be nearing 30. The Quinns were frequently seen around town, and they were able to live a quiet private life in Bristol where Mrs. Quinn still resides and Anthony is buried on their property.

I have this wonderful movie on DVD. There is sadness, but lots of joy. I used to hear this dance on the radio back in the 1960s before I saw the movie.

Theodorakis should not be considered only a genius composer, but an indomitable spirit, full of passion for life and freedom. He fooled Death several times, being in execution lists, in torture chambers, in exile. He tried to place poets' lyrics in every home, even the smallest one, like hot bread. To feed the spirit of people with sensitivity, values ​​and ideals. He fought against conquerors and dictators, to see countries free and united, no matter how difficult this may seem. He fought for the preservance of greek culture and soveireignty , during the junta days and even until the debt crisis days of the recent past

However many times you see or hear this, it never ages, amazing film and the music absolutely beautiful. Long live Greece and its people.

Watching Alexis Zorbas for the first time was almost eye-opening because of how actually modern the movie was. Anthony Quinn was perfect for playing Zorbas and this ending was the pinnacle.
