"ZORBA" Zorba was not Greek, history and everything about "Greek" Zorba is just a political lie, to manifest a false image of Greek culture and traditions of Greece. Actually.. The real truth about Zorba is that he was not a Greek, but a MACEDONIAN, who was expelled from Greece, (from the north of Greece, where the Macedonians lived, and still live) together with his family, father and mother in MACEDONIA in the city of Skopje , where he was buried. He fled the Earth because the Greeks forcibly changed all the names of Macedonians, also changed the names of cities and villages to GREEK names. And they forbade Macedonians to speak their Macedonian language, both at home and in public... which was strictly punishable by 10-15 years in prison. That's why Zorba fled Greece because he didn't want to submit to fascist methods by Greece, and all this was supported by the "democratic west"

@@makedon5575 The Macedonian language was a Greek language, as Macedonians were a Greek race. Sorry guys, you cannot change the history. Don't let others cheat on you, by trying to persuade you for something that is intentionally historically wrong. You better seek other historical sources to learn the truth. Start by wondering why you cannot read and understand what is written on Macedonian archeological findings, such as coins, signs etc. Because your language is NOT Macedonian. It is a Slavic language. It is so simple.

This takes me back thirty years to church giving the eulogy for my father after his truly tragic death, and a life with quite a lot of tragedy since childhood. But, he reminded me so much of Zorba. Somehow that church of sorrowful tears changed to laughter in the midst of his stories. Sometimes life gets so hard, all one can do is dance. Thank you, Zorba! You made an excruciating day more than bearable. You brought me the gift of laughter to share when we needed it most. ❤️

I was in the Navy and had a chance to visit Athens, Greece. My friends and I met some Greeks in the bar and begin drinking with them. They only had a jukebox but eventually they wanted to dance. First, they ask us to dance and show them some moves. Eventually, they did their dance to this music and tried to teach us. Oh, the memories when I hear this music. It was a lot of fun.

Fourteen years later I watched this movie with our son who was around 6 and after a while, he said, Mother, what is their mission? Argh!! My husband and his son had the same reaction, neither getting the love of life Zorba was illustrating.

@@chrisdiver6224 , I always found that incident to be disturbing. @@katherine.benson4489 Thank you. Yes, I found it disturbing too. My memory also is that Basil (Anthony Bates) was a bookish guy whom Zorba (Quinn) opened up with his enthusiasm for life without which Basil might not have had the courage to approach the window (Irene Papas) which lead to her death. So is the film a tragedy because a young man opens up and two very different people from very different backgrounds connect -- which should be a beautiful thing. Should he have been more aware of the possible danger he was putting her in? What is his responsibility for her death? Anyway, it was the communities rigidity which motivated the outcome as is true world wide.

@@shirleyandrews1152 Yes he knew his race. He was borne and raised in Mexico. Manuel Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca, born in Chihuahua Mexico, during the Mexican revolution. Pretty sure he knew his race. Quinn made it into his name because his father was an Irish immigrant. He made the first protests about the racism in the film industry. Not loudly, he just always mentioned that why do brown people always play the bad guys in films. He got a lot of flack for it. He spent half of his career as either a native American, which he was, or an "evil violent Mexican bandito." I mean, he really had to fight over this issue, until the 1950s, I think when he played Zapata's brother in Viva Zapata. He was the first Mexican American to win an Academy Award. His race was a huge issue that only stopped being an issue because he really had to struggle with the industry, and won, because he could play any roll.

Yes, he was a citizen of the world because he was beloved by so many people from diverse cultures. He portrayed all his characters with passion and is as famous for his artwork as his acting. In fact, in the movie 'Viva Zapata!', there is a scene which he shares with Marlon Brando, where he is sculpturing a horse's head from a block of wood with a makeshift penknife. Apparently Tony, between takes was working on this particular piece, and the director suitably impressed by his artistic talent, incorporated this aspect in the film.
