I love how paintings can be so messy and blobby but still somehow look just as beautiful as real life 😄

That's definitely why painting is way better when you're painting what your eye sees, not what the camera sees. You can interpret values in a much wider range than your camera does the second the shutter clicks.

I used to think being a good artist was how photo realistic you could get it but i find that boring and you might as well take a photo instead. For me good art is how expressive it is with loose confident brush strokes.

Its because both are messy and blobby
I’m using your analogy of “start with a broom and end with a needle”. Thanks!
I love your comment that you’re “translating” what you see. That makes so much more sense and takes the pressure off and allows me to enjoy the process more. Thank you.
Sometimes you just need to paint and keep painting until you are happy with the results but keep in mind ...most artists don't like their own work from time to time... believe me I know. This guy... just has one hell of a way to teach and it's very effective!
Just started getting back into painting after years of hiatus. Your videos have reinvigorated my passion for art and the joy in the creative process. Thanks so much.
Thank you for this tip! I've been struggling with landscape/scenery paintings for EVER, and I feel like part of the problem is, exactly as you said, that I keep trying to copy the photo and become paralyzed by all the details that I feel like I MUST include. Thank you for giving me the permission to NOT do that haha. I'm gonna go get painting now.
I did some of Chris' courses and it really helped me to up my skill level in painting. I love the style of expressive painting that Chris has, and his teaching is so well organized and presented. On a personal note it is also nice to see a fellow 'jock' breaking the stereotype of the 'arteest'. This is another excellent video. I have gone from painting an hour a day to two hours a day and can't stop. First exhibition will be end of the year. Thanks Chris, you da man.

This is so cool to hear! Congrats on the exhibition!
You have such a great way of explaining things with simplicity. I can watch your 8minute video- glued to the screen, absorbing, and then I can leave with the motivation to test the technique(s) out in a painting. You’ve really found a sweet spot. Thank you for sharing your wisdom ♥️
I love how you explain this. 😊
Timely and so informative! I just painted my largest painting yet, a 12 by 36 featuring a gravel road with puddles in the sun but surrounded by the green grassy, weedy landscape receding into the distance….organizing the landscape into simplified shapes to show recession is a wonderful lesson for me that I will use on my next painting! Thank you!
Great explanation of color and detail showing distance.
Really enjoy the way you work and how good you explain the process.
Thank u for taking the time to explain values n shapes along w saturation in landscapes.
Glad to see you talking about landscapes. That's all I do...
I just learned so much. You are a wonderful teacher.
This video was packed with information, thank you for the step by step explanation of how to depict distance that is lost in photos
Really good ideas & demonstrations here... very clear. Thank you!!
Thank you!!! Very thorough explanation!! I’m getting back in.. actually setting up a space for it right now!!! So inspiring!!
Superb summary and demo. So good to be reminded of these key things to look for and work on. This ties perfectly into a forest scene I'm doing now. As always, thanks for your excellent guidance.
Excellent explanation. Thanks!
A truly Excellent lesson. Thank you!
As always Chris, a very well articulated lesson....you are a superb teacher.

Great video as always! I loved your recipe for making up rocks. I would love more of these; for example for different kinds of trees.
.... Great insight and Awesome delivery.... You have summed up what's wrong with 60% of my landscapes... Not anymore. Thank you. 💜😍💜👏
Well explained, your channel brings value to the art views 😊

Thank you teacher!❤️❤️
Thanks Chris!
I am still painting with acrylic, but hope to move to oil once I am more adept at mixing values etc... so I don't have to repaint/edit/correct so much. Thanks for this.
Cutting back the trees is a gem!

practical explanation
Great information, I love the way you explain everything and your painting process. A small suggestion for your videos is you background music seems too loud. It distracts from your words. You are a talented artist and a blessed person to be able to teach so effectively. Thank you
My problem is my cardboard cut outs look like cardboard cut outs...
Do you have a recommended order in taking your courses? I.e. foundation or drawing first? Love your videos. I have painted for about 10 years but youu color mixing finally made it click. Thanks for what you do.
Bravo!!!! Great video!

Great 💥
I do soft pastels but follow your points. Prefer to do my interpretation of a scene rather than make a photo copy of it.
Love your work! I use Acrylics but find alot of your techniques transfer to Acrylics as well. I really should try oils.....

@@b.comeau2597whoohoo, I'm not the only one here haha. I do find a bit of retarder helps the acrylics stay wet longer and blend easier, more like oils.
What is the programme you are using with the colour dropper?
nice
What is your tips for painting faces and heads in groups that are about 2 inches high?
You should make a video on the different ways to paint Nichols Cage.
Which app or program do you use to determine the colors in your photo?
hey Chris, I need your help with something. So recently i gessoed a canvas and decided to paint on it. But the paint is being very sheer & transparent on it, instead of opaque & pigmented. Not to mention, that i also added water to the gesso while gessoing it. Do you happen to know why is that happening? Why is the paint being sheer and not pigmented? Adding a medium makes it even more thin. Please help here. Because im beginning to think that not gessoing a canvas was better, because atleast it helped the paint to stick to the canvas (which shouldn't be good)
I just subscribed to your channel. Please explain the meaning of values.. Relationship in painting.I'm from India. I wish to improve my Landscape painting.
what I would like to now is which paint brush to use.
Hello paint coach, do you know how I can prevent my oil paintings from having thicker impasto like texture on one area and then thinner flatter paint texture on other areas? For instance imhaving problems finding thicker clouds or thicker water but rest look thin and not impasto. I try not to do it but it always turns out that way. I don't like how the surface texture is different from place to place and want an even surface texture. Do you think this is acceptable? Do you have any tips? Anyone? Thank you.
Chris I’ve been watching your videos since you had 7k subscribers, btw I miss paint talk, I am now an experienced painter, used to paint everything alla prima, then I studied for a while at an atelier where they make tons of layers… now when I paint I’ve fallen into the perfectionist trap and I do tons of layers… tips on getting back alla prima and being faster??
I like to follow you - you've given me great technique ideas. Question for you: Are you familiar with Stefan Baumann? He has ideas on color temperature that are confusing, such as, shadows are warm - purple is warm - pure light is cool. What are your thoughts on these? thank you.
thank you for this and you are handsome too God bless
Any chance you could upload the photo that you painted from in the description? That would be super helpful so that I could print it out and use it to follow along wiht your tutorials. :)

good video bro artist life good
Chris, please help. I need your help regarding oil paints.
thanks so much. I love painting landscapes, but I never know how to start. I learn: translate and don't just copy what you see. In the beginning draw only shapes, no details. use flat colors. the foreground is much darker than the background organize the scene in different levels of distance. red and yellow disappear in the background which becomes more blue. Don't paint trees at the beginning, only shapes., contours atmosphere: colors, values, edges simplicity more value contrast in the foreground than in the background Light and shadow in photos are not the same as in a painting. keep everything more fuzzy in the background. details in the foreground.
is it possible to use different types of paints in the same painting? for context, if i’m doing a painting & there’s parts of my painting that i want to be more blended and parts that i want to do line work. is it possible to do part oil & part acrylic? if so, is there a certain order that’s okay/not okay?
Thanks, Coach! Worthwhile as usual. Just one point - background music, for me, intrudes too much making intake and comprehension harder and less enjoyable. Continuing to wish you well and thanks.
It might be safe to assume that the stuff smart phones do to reference photos can easily mislead painters to misjudge distance and perspective😅
Why does it seem harder to paint simplified? 😅
