The Old, The New, and The Unconventional: Assessing Contemporary Conflicts | Palki Sharma |

For the past decade, security managers in many nations have been focused on emerging threats and concerns about maritime security. Those issues remain-but have been overtaken by the re-emergence of land war in Europe. The conflict in Ukraine has made us reassess the conduct and consequences of conventional wars in the third decade of the 21st century.
What have we learnt about the importance of stockpiling, logistics, and internal industrial capacity? How have our conceptions of deterrence changed? Are there learnings about the dispersion and empowerment of command and control systems? What do we now understand better about joint operations across air, sea, land, cyber, and space? What of the speed-skilling of soldiers at the frontline, to adopt and adapt to changing technology and battlefield conditions? What does this conflict tell us about the escalation ladder when a nuclear power is involved?
In Conversation:
General Angus J. Campbell, Chief of the Defence Force, Australia
General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, India
General Jim Mattis, Former Secretary of Defense, USA
Moderator:
Palki Sharma, Managing Editor, Network18, India

All these Europeans are coming to the dialogue to score a round of applause from other europeans by speaking against Russia. I'm not making the point that Russia is right but the question is "Are these europeans going to offer tangible and practical solutions to the conflict or will they continue to show the camaraderie towards Ukraine and further arm it?" The USA is fighting a proxy war against Russia at the cost of Ukraine. USA has a long grudge and obsession towards Russia.

You're right, I think we should offer the same solution in Kashmir. As China and Pakistan have more power together than India alone, they have every right to carve up Indian territory amongst themselves. India is not part of any alliance and Russia certainly owes China for their support by withholding military aid to India. Will be interesting to see how such a conflict plays out, doubt it ends well for India though, such a shame.

    1. Do not tell us that NATO is run from cafeterias of NATO offices. NATO used to allow deliberations with representatives of Russian state there because it is confident of its secure military grade internal tactical and strategic communications structure remaining impregnable to such token gestures of access by those russian respresentatives. 2. With assistance through military aid to Ukraine in this war, the NATO has made its intentions clear that at this juncture (given the numerical nuclear and nonnuclear tactical and strategic wherewithal Russia is still in possession of) NATO has no intentions of invading Russia directly and officially with troops of its member countries as it will blunt the curated narrative propagated by NATO member states of NATO not being an aggressor and as it will open floodgates for Russia to target expensive dual use (military and civilian) infrastructures leading deterioration of law and order and oberall stability of socioeconomically advanced western member states that have tremendous role in fuelling economic growth that funds military might that in return helps to maintain edge in long term hegemonic strategic posture of the western allies. For NATO, directly invading Russia right now makes no sense as militarily weakening Russia through conflict with non-NATO countries by provoking Russia firing off their shoulders is part of their agenda- so this theatrics like "they have taken troops from along borders with NATO member states as they know NATO is not a threat to them" is a drivel that cuts no ice with neutral military watchers. Russia is no saint either. But that does not provide any moral high ground and bully pulpit of ethics and morality to NATO member states and western allies given their past and recent misdemanors. There is no denying that Nato's pre war and (pre crimea conflict as well) push for eastward expansion through 1997 expansion, 2004 and 2007 statements opening doors for eastern non-NATO countries and regime changes through colored revolutions provoked Russia further deteriorating prospects of global peace and stability as Russia is well within sane rationale to construe that its positive signalling through dismantling of the warsaw pact (a nasty alliance in itself just like the NATO) was taken for a ride as its weakness to build upon and mount pressure on Russia by expansion of NATO with possibility of sorrounding Russia further along its border with nuclear stockpile that would diminish Russia's capability as a continental neighbor of neutralising nuclear tipped missiles fired at its territory with significantly reduced reaction time while the US as a transcontinental player as well as an offshore balancer would remain safer at a far longer dustance from Russian nuclear tipped missiles fired from Russian territory providing the US significantly more reaction time, thus tipping the balance of power between the US and Russia by tilting the doctrine of Mutually assured destruction, especially with deployment of ballistic missile defense in europe, in favor of the US by means of weaning Russia's strategic deterrence away. Political oneupmanship by means of loudmouthing threat of nuclear retaliation is still nicer than actual use of nuclear weapons as the US did in Japan. If anything, this threat deters NATO from miliarily invading russia that NATO tonguetwists as its deliberate choice of not posing any threat to russia. There is no point exaggerating the nuclear deterrent posed by russia as the US coordinating with Russia for safe landing of Biden in Kyiv only goes to prove that backchannel diplomatic communications between Russia and NATi are intact even in this chaos for thwarting a nuclear escalation in the eventuality of one. 3. When it comes to shared democratic values, the west has supported military dictatorships of Pakistan with funds and military weapons in their past wars against democratic India. Also the west using its militico-politico-financial clout in the UN, have formulated a resolution in favor of Pakistan wherein the west in the garb of neutrality have secured Pakistan's de facto control of parts of Kashmir illegally occupied by Pakistan by means of force despite the fact that Kashmir legally acceded into India through instrument of accession (as part of india independence act mutually agreed to between the british indian colonial regime, Indian nationalists and pro-Pak faction of undivided India) and the west keep preaching india on arriving at a solution based on the biased resolution through a referendum. If the west wants to condone the illegality of Pakistani occupation of Indian territories and seeks a referendum on the basis of religion (India being hindu majority secular country while the Indian state of Kashmir is Muslim majority), India will ofcourse draw a equivalence on the double standards at play here by the west as the west promptly calls out Russian occupation of eastern ukrainian states as "invasion by Russia" (but does not call out Pakistan's invasion of Kashmir in similar tone) and does not call for a referendum to be held on the basis of lignuistics to see as to which country between Russia and Ukraine, Russian speaking population of eastern Ukraine side with (very different from western stance of a referendum being held in Kashmir). Democratic values and rules of order go both ways, they are not set in motion for being observed by developing countries like india at the cost of their core interests, that of their territorial integrity while being whimsically tweaked and twisted to suit to the farfetched strategic interests of rich western countries in faraway continents where they often fund and support authoritarian, undemocratic, military dicatorships relgious theicracies, zealots, despots from time to time so long as they cater to their strategic interests only to have them bumped off in the name of cause of humanitarian intervention and spread of democratic values when they are of no use or alogn against the strategic interests of the west. 4. The western countries are well within their sovereign rights to insulate their population from what they consider as cyber disinformation by the Russian state and parenthesising Russian digital media under it, citing security threat but the west should not then complain by playing the broken record of democratic values being undermined when China does the very same with western media citing security threat and attempts of cyber disinformation by western media as the west behaves like a nanny by deciding for its population by not allowing them democratic right of expression and freedom to determine on their own as to whether news reports, analyses, editorials and opeds by Russian media outlets wholly or partially constitute disinformation campaign. Do the western socalled democracies have no trust and faith reposed on judgment of their educated people? The western countries, the collective west so to speak of, absolutely can not decide for population of sovereign countries in rest of the world on what constitites as disinformation, by weaponsing its militico-financial and technological clout like banning russian media on global platforms like KZread.

Gen Mattis asked why India chose to be a democratic nation when it gained independence. This isn't a pressing question for Indians. The question should be, why has Pakistan gone down the road that it has since its independence? Why did Germany establish the Third Reich? It seems that they don't trust the world that they live in, and then they communicate this distrust to others. How can this change? Pakistan expects India to take advantage of it being disadvantaged, and it wants to be in India's shoes instead. India is not taking advantage of Pakistan's current predicament, perhaps Pakistan will acknowledge that when the time comes.

Gen.Campbel & Gen. Mattis spoke more like politicians then Generals. NATO is the biggest meschief monger in the whole issue. The west unfortunately comprises of the worst war mongerers we have seen that in the Middle East in the near past. The Russia- Ukrain war can only stop if the west is kicked out of the scene, earlier Ukraine understands this so much better for them.

India is silent though do not support Russia's invasion As honorable PM shouted on expansionism of China, same holds true for Russia. PM clearly told Russia, it is not era of war, and shown unhappiness. The challenge is India is too heavily dependent on Russia for arms and Russia is dependent on India for a strong friend in Asia pacific. Russia is gone too far and there is return due to heavy loss of their own people and number of arms. Western countries would keep pumping money to Ukraine invasion and continue to deteriorate Russia's economy and engage them for long.

@@sudarshaniyer2747 Why should Putin stop? - he ought to wipe off Ukraine or take over fully. Expanding NATO onto Russian borders was a no no & Russia has been warning against it since 1990s. This is like the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis where USA threatened to nuke Cuba for housing Soviet nukes on its soil right in USA's backyard. Now it is the other way around. Putin has the moral right to decimate Ukraine but he has been immensely merciful last year - not so much this year & thus Russia is going to win, Ukraine stands decimated already.

I do not know why we in india do not focus on how a person and weapons looks. See these 2officer's uniforms. which looks more comfortable and good looking??? Plz focus on everything. leave "chalta hai" attitude. Same with Equipment people say in war how weapon look doesn't matter true but then why western weapons looks cool in battle yet effective???? This is how they market effective and good looking. We do not see that in India. Be it PM on some inauguration or he is on some event displaying new technologies those presentation are always poor. See when our Defence minister Rajnath Singh hands over indigenously developed equipment and systems to our army see that solider the way he talked and they way that equipment was sitting on him, and that wire coming out does that looked war ready no??? So people should pay attention to presentations and equipment. When our companies are making equipment if they make something good looking and still effective what is the harm??? Also some things need to changed in indian military. See that way we like US President's Beast and United States Secret Service see how they operate. I would like TATA or Mahindra giving our PM and President something similar to Beast. West even IRAN who is sanctioned put so much effort on how they products looks so they look cool to show on the other hand we completely ignore that. If you think this doesn't matter check Strat News Global Nitin Gokhale said that our soldiers on China border were happy when they received TATA's Safari Storm he said some soldiers mentioned to him how They always see Chinese soldiers come in good looking, comfortable cars and We (indian soldiers) were using gypsy. They are also human they have also emotions if we can give them comfortable and cool looking yet effective equipment it boosts their moral. Just see videos of our soldiers vs any other ours look like they are not going to gym and do not have equipment for war and do not have proper equipment someone's helmet is covering eyes, someone is wearing patka, someone have jacket others don't. They are protecting us it is our job to give them proper equipment. FOr that have to change "chalta hai" mindset See US new Abraham-X tank how futuristic it look and that doesn't mean its not effective. They focused on its looks unlike us

Keep your emotions aside and be logical at first. India has a extreme trade deficit with Russia and China. When it comes to trade with US, Australia and EU , India contributed exponentially to its GDP (employment,FDI ,Export and Import etc). Country does not run by emotions, it runs by money (economy) in this modern world.
