Leadership Lessons from Gen. James Mattis (Ret.)

General James Mattis (Ret.) served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 2013. During this time he was the 11th Commander of United States Central Command. We sat down with him and asked him your questions.
0:08 - What is the toughest decision you had to make while in the Marine Corps and did you ever regret your decision?
2:25 - How did you stay motivated throughout your Marine Corps career?
3:27 - How do you keep improving as a leader to meet the demand of each role in your career?
5:53 - There was a cold night in Afghanistan when you were walking the perimeter by yourself, greeting a bunch of young Marines. What were you thinking about?
7:16 - What is the one leadership lesson that you learned as a General grade officer that you wish you had known your whole career?
10:18 - What leadership books do you recommend?
11:55 - What did you look for in your NCO's and how should the relationship between an NCO and an officer compliment each other?
13:58 - What in your opinion is the most important leadership trait and why?
15:33 - What is the kill-casualty radius of the knife-hand?
(U.S. Marine Corps video by Sgt. Tony Nardiello and Lance Cpl. Dana Beesley)

I used electrician's tape to keep sand out of it. He said the electrician's tape would keep my weapon from operating effectively. I disagreed with him, saying that the electrician's tape would would keep the sand from getting into my rifle. In my view, sand would stop my M-16 from operating. We agreed to disagree. But damn! His leadership in the battlefield led our battalion to crush the Iraqi Army forces like they were paper mache!!

Thank you for doing this wonderful interview. I was the wife of a Green Beret, and was approached by the men to present our colors at a Command Performance Banquet who were anxious to tell me how proud they were to serve under my husband. They were animated and happy to relate some of the training they had to go through and how my husband led them out on every maneuver. They followed him across the hanging ropes, the barricades, the mud trenches and the live fire under the barbed wire. He never asked them to go through any part of their training where he didn't lead out even with full packs on a march. He had a Disney call he made when he was ready to motivate them into action. I drove to the D Z one day to watch them jump and almost wrecked the car not watching the road. I saw the wind take a chute back up after coming down and drag my husband across a rain soaked field. And then one day, the inevitable tragedy happened. He insisted to take one of his groups to drop in Vietnam and blessed each one as they jumped from the plane as they hooked up to the jump line. Enemy fire was horrific and every man that jumped did so to his death. The plane, pilot, co=pilot and navigator made it back to base. My husband took if very hard and it wasn't long before he retired. I truly believe he died wanting to see his troops that he left back in the skies of Vietnam. His last words after the doctor's diagnosis was to his children: "I've got my ticket home." God Bless all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our homeland. God keep all our service men and women in our daily prayers. SOBEIT, AMEN!

My respect and I am worth it. I learned this by watching and listening to those in charge while on board the USS Kitty Hawk, CVA-73, 1971-73. US Postal mail handler responsible for MARDET receiving its Playboy and Hustler magazines. The pride I felt will always linger in my heart. Awesome place, awesome people! God Bless.

I have been out of the Marines for over 20 years. I am now going to work through the Commandant's reading list. It is never to late to be a better leader.

That last answer. The man is actually humble. Having been where he's been - it's his own troops that keep him humble. Love it.

@@generaljosephm.martin7379 If you are indeed General Joseph M. Martin - the man seen in this video - then I would be honored to correspond with you. I have reason to NOT believe that to be the truth though, as I have had similar requests by celebrities that proved to be spam. If there were a Marine website that would not allow anyone to misuse your name, that a civilian can enter (by invitation) to meet you there, so we could then correspond? If you know of such a site?

I met this Marine as a Recruit in 1994, and he gave to me the most truthful statement ever, unsolicited, without expectation of anything, and with the greatest umbrage to himself. Takes alot of guts.
