Leadership Lessons from Gen. James Mattis (Ret.)
General James Mattis (Ret.) served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 2013. During this time he was the 11th Commander of United States Central Command. We sat down with him and asked him your questions.
0:08 - What is the toughest decision you had to make while in the Marine Corps and did you ever regret your decision?
2:25 - How did you stay motivated throughout your Marine Corps career?
3:27 - How do you keep improving as a leader to meet the demand of each role in your career?
5:53 - There was a cold night in Afghanistan when you were walking the perimeter by yourself, greeting a bunch of young Marines. What were you thinking about?
7:16 - What is the one leadership lesson that you learned as a General grade officer that you wish you had known your whole career?
10:18 - What leadership books do you recommend?
11:55 - What did you look for in your NCO's and how should the relationship between an NCO and an officer compliment each other?
13:58 - What in your opinion is the most important leadership trait and why?
15:33 - What is the kill-casualty radius of the knife-hand?
(U.S. Marine Corps video by Sgt. Tony Nardiello and Lance Cpl. Dana Beesley)

During a multi-branch military live fire training exercise, he commanded such respect that those under him from grunt to low level officer appealed to him to carry the call-sign CHAOS because (he would eventually fly for the military, and) he demonstrated himself to be the proverbial "Colonel Has An Outstanding Solution" !! He's been rightly called the man who could work for anyone as-so-long as they would never betray our country. Gen Mattis is a Marine, aka far too smart to get into politics.
I like this guy. I know I didn't vote for Trump, I think he really sounds so genuine, decent, and honorable. My grandfather was in the Army from 1942 - 1945. He was in Brazil, Ascension Island, and Africa. He reminds me in some ways of him. General Jim Mattis would be a great choice.
I remember my first Company Commander and the way he was as a leader. I also, remember the day he left, how sad it was. He was such a good leader, I literally felt like I could follow him into the depths of hell and have no qualms about it. He was so proficient in literally everything, his mind was sharp, his body was strong, but his spirit was intoxicating. Genuinely miss him as both a fellow Marine, and as a subordinate who felt like he learned so much from this singular man. Wish he was still around.

I learned in boot camp. Weapon, gear, body. The morning after the worst sand storm I ever endured sleeping on the dirt I cleaned my rifle like my life depended on it while others ate chow. Later that day their rifles jammed while mine never did the entire time I was in the Marines.

Yeah it was his leadership and not the fact you had cruise missiles, Abrams tanks, F-16's and A-10's against some T-72's and dudes with flip flops and AK-47's.

Retired Army NCO here getting inspired. Thank you, Sir. You would have a lot more troops than just Marines following you to the gates of Hell if you said the word.
Few men in this world are as solid and fearless as MATTIS. When he speaks thunder awaits a pause.

SoulBaron Not yet. It still up to congress. Also needed to be out of the military for 7 years. Its only been 3. Plus it preferred to have a civilian in the SecDef post. But last time congress approved someone like General Mattis was George Marshall in 1950. So hopefully congress is smart and makes the right choice with selecting General Mattis.

This man deserves to be Secretary of Defense. Goodness knows, he has put his life on the line numerous times for this country unlike the spineless politicians who are now maneuvering to deny him the post.

The most spineless one is Trump who dodged the draft with some bullshit excuse that he had a doctor concoct for him. He only selected he General because he knew that he would be applauded for his decision.

Thank you for doing this wonderful interview. I was the wife of a Green Beret, and was approached by the men to present our colors at a Command Performance Banquet who were anxious to tell me how proud they were to serve under my husband. They were animated and happy to relate some of the training they had to go through and how my husband led them out on every maneuver. They followed him across the hanging ropes, the barricades, the mud trenches and the live fire under the barbed wire. He never asked them to go through any part of their training where he didn't lead out even with full packs on a march. He had a Disney call he made when he was ready to motivate them into action. I drove to the D Z one day to watch them jump and almost wrecked the car not watching the road. I saw the wind take a chute back up after coming down and drag my husband across a rain soaked field. And then one day, the inevitable tragedy happened. He insisted to take one of his groups to drop in Vietnam and blessed each one as they jumped from the plane as they hooked up to the jump line. Enemy fire was horrific and every man that jumped did so to his death. The plane, pilot, co=pilot and navigator made it back to base. My husband took if very hard and it wasn't long before he retired. I truly believe he died wanting to see his troops that he left back in the skies of Vietnam. His last words after the doctor's diagnosis was to his children: "I've got my ticket home." God Bless all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our homeland. God keep all our service men and women in our daily prayers. SOBEIT, AMEN!

I love General Mattis. I respect him beyond words and love his ability to be humane, compassionate where it's deserved, confident and REAL.... He gave his life to the Corp. But listening to this makes me understand even more. He has the utmost level of morals and integrity. He doesn't comprehend or even have the words "giving up" in his vocabulary. There's so much more and I could go on forever. Not to mention he's funny as hell!!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤❤❤
Mad dog Mattis! By standard a kickass us marine general!
Im a civ. I am so absolutely impressed by his demeanor. I'd follow him into war because I trust that he wouldn't call for war unless it were absolutely necessary. So excited to have such a stand up person as SoS.

There is no doubt that a man like Gen. Mattis and the men in his command can keep an entire Nation safe.
My dear, younger brother is a marine. He was in Desert Storm. I am very fortunate to have such a brave brother and kind soul in my life. Thank you all for your very important service to our country ! God bless!!
absolutely great man I will take your teachings to heart as a SSG in the UNITED STATES ARMY.
I am humbled by this man and every time I see a Marine.
wow, no script. this is the man
My respect and I am worth it. I learned this by watching and listening to those in charge while on board the USS Kitty Hawk, CVA-73, 1971-73. US Postal mail handler responsible for MARDET receiving its Playboy and Hustler magazines. The pride I felt will always linger in my heart. Awesome place, awesome people! God Bless.
Thank you so much for your services, always a Marine.
"Where do you guys get these names?" asks "Mad Dog". Semper Fi, General, and you will make a truly great SecDef.
I have been out of the Marines for over 20 years. I am now going to work through the Commandant's reading list. It is never to late to be a better leader.
That last answer. The man is actually humble. Having been where he's been - it's his own troops that keep him humble. Love it.

@@generaljosephm.martin7379 If you are indeed General Joseph M. Martin - the man seen in this video - then I would be honored to correspond with you. I have reason to NOT believe that to be the truth though, as I have had similar requests by celebrities that proved to be spam. If there were a Marine website that would not allow anyone to misuse your name, that a civilian can enter (by invitation) to meet you there, so we could then correspond? If you know of such a site?

God bless and Thank you to all the righteous Warriors out there fighting the good fight!
I served in Nam as a Navy Corpsman w/the Marines and the lessons learned there have guided me throughout my life.
I met this Marine as a Recruit in 1994, and he gave to me the most truthful statement ever, unsolicited, without expectation of anything, and with the greatest umbrage to himself. Takes alot of guts.
