Amazing progress, good to see the restored Lichfield canal taking shape too ! Let's hope future government sees sense and carries on past Handsacre and on to Crewe and beyond to Manchester !!!

I'm a retired accountant from the International Civil Service who had reason to get involved in the second section, London end. What I discovered is they'd done no costing, just taken a blue-sky money-no-object approach which was going to be horrendously expensive given they were messing with one of the top five most expensive roads in London. Houses £20m each.

Sad to see it just end. Apparently they need to decide what type of Junction to build at Handsacre as the scrapping of the Northern leg means they need to redesign it.

@@Jamie92208 Nobody asked the experts, it was seen as a way of keeping businesses afloat. The criteria used with other vanity projects should have finished them long before.

@Jamie92208 yes, I've visited the site of the junction and the compounds are still there but work has stopped for now ! I heard last week that the Mayor's of Birmingham and Manchester have talked about a new railway along the route to increase freight capacity so, as a trackman myself, I hope it goes ahead !

The biggest white elephant in the history of railways. Beeching in reverse. You have to remember when it was first agreed, you had a train every 20 minutes from Euston to Manchester and Birmingham at 125 mph. The rest of the system was falling apart….still is. This money was needed to sort the whole system out. What’s left of HS2 is a total embarrassment . 🚂🚴‍♂️👣🇺🇦

HS2 is now HS1.5. The 20 million in the North have been ignored again. Levelling up promises have failed.

IMHO they should have started the HS2 project by joining the cities of the north together first , and connecting it all to London last . . .

This section is still happening, it joins the WCM near to Handsacre
