The North Korea in China - (Documentary 2019)

Hey Laowinners!
This documentary I made about the North Korean region of China is eye opening, and very interesting. The borders of North Korea don't just stop at China, they extend. In and around Jilin province, Dandong, the Tumen river, and the Yalu, North Koreans both deal with China on an economic basis, as well as culturally and linguistically. Through escaped refugees, to the entire Korean communities living their lives within the borders of a foreign country, the North Korea of China is a region that is seldom talked about, but we took it upon ourselves to explore and find some answers.

I was born in Tumen (도문/图们), which sits right on the borderline between China and North Korea in what you called “North Korea in China” haha. There isn’t much content on KZread that features my hometown so it feels nice to see videos like this! To be honest, the area of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture feels like a mix of communistic China/North Korea mixed with 1970s South Korea politics..anyway enjoyed the documentary!

laowhy86 I was originally going to visit Yanbian in the winter of 2017 (haven’t been there since I moved to America in 2004), but with all the tension going on with North Korea I decided to stay put. I heard at the time China moved troops en mass to the Tumen border. There they used to have a small garrison stationed there but as of last winter, troop activity increased dramatically. As a Chinese Korean, I am proud to see North and South Korea hosting the peace talks summit just last month, as well as the North having talks with China with talks for denuclearization. It seems like much progress was made in the span of just a few months.

I'm subscribed to a few documentary channels and just clicked on this one thinking it was from one of those channels, it took a little for me to realise that it was actually you and I got pleasantly surprised. the quality of your videos in terms of content, camerawork and editing is fantastic, and it seems like it's still improving to the point where it becomes harder to distinguish from the dedicated documentary makers with lots of experience and funding. Keep up the good work and until I can experience these things for myself, I'll vicariously live through your amazing videos. Lots of love!

Calling ethnic Korean born in China with Chinese citizenship "North Korean Chinese" is extremely offensive. tbh this is the first time I hear this. Like what??? Do people call them that?? They are known as "朝鮮族中國人" which literally translate to Korean Chinese. I thought this video was going to talk about the real North Korean worker that the NK government sent to China as cheap labor to help them get foreign currency. What a huge let down.

This is such a distortion of reality. The Korean Chinese have lived in China for centuries, long before the existence of North or South Korea.

I am kinda confused as a Chinese. Are the people who hosted you Korean Chinese? Or they are immigrant from N.Korea? If they are ethnic Korean that is not so rare. There are so many ethnic Korean in northern Chinese, just like there are a lot of ethnic Spanish in the States.

@weird april I don't know dude. I honestly thought he was going to show us the real life of "North Koreans in China (朝僑-在中國北朝鮮人)" in this video before I watched. I still think that would've been very interesting. But the video is about the life of "Korean Chinese(中國朝鮮族)" and laowhy86 calls them North Korean Chinese which is fairly misleading.
