Very interesting to hear how this big change transpired for you and your family. Glad you and Winston have both settled into a more stable environment and have a safe place for your wife and children. Looking forward to your future ADVChina adventures. Freedom is good when you can choose to NOT to wear a Mask during the pandemic or practice social distancing and now NOT to get Vaccinated! FREEDOM is GOOD when you selfishly endanger the lives of others by your own selfish acts! This Pandemic has taught us a lot about freedom. tell those to the families of the more than ALMOSR 600,000 dead Americans and counting from Covid19 that they are free to die unnecessarily as they so wish but the pain and agony to their survivors can be measured and replace by the price of the freedom they have? Same questions to the Europeans. Look to the Chinese in China (1.3billion of them) in Taiwan and Macau, including HK (who have just lost their freedom) Their economy are now back n track the Chinese have 100 of millions of visitors travelling across the country just this Tomb Sweeping Festival wothout any worry of the Covid19. Who is better off now???? Freedom??? Who is having the REAL FREEDOM now???

A standard surgical mask doesn’t inhibit the spread of airborne pathogens and using one in this manor is not what they are even designed for. @@pneron2032 I studied at the time at the university in Tianjin. I was on Tiananmen Square the day before the massacre. I went in to tents and spoke to the kids tha were fasting. The next morning we woke up. On TV and Radio, there were playing old discourses of Deng Xiao Ping. There was no phone at the time, but already everywhere on the walls, people had placarded posters with the number of death. A week before my embassy had sent us a Telex, in case of civil war, fill up your bathtub with water and buy tin can food. They never contacted us again. We waited 10 days. It was very hard to phone overseas so our family didn't know what happened to us. All the students on campus left. My Chinese friend who had an underground newspaper, entrusted me with documents, before going back to his village in hiding. He told me the kids in the tents that were fasting were all dead, A professor that just got back from the US and had spoken freely in class was arrested, many other people were arrested. We needed to figure things out ourselves. Most countries were repatriating the students but Canada didn't. We were left with North Korean and African countries. Finding plane tickets was not easy, We managed to find tickets out of China to Hong Kong. So if you are saying you "mean got an airplane" to minimize my experience, you need a little more historical perspective. China was not like it was now, and leaving my Chinese friends behind and not knowing if I would ever see them and go back to the comfort of my country was a lesson for my young self.

Is it something to be proud of when your family fled the country after Vietnam war? First wave fled because of the fear of “communist retribution”, which never happened. Second wave fled due to economic hardship thanks to US sanctions. I have family members that fought on both sides during the war and non of them left even they have the chance to. Yes my grandpa’s brother is force to go to education camp and the condition there was terrible but so did everywhere else in the country at that time.

"It's not mature enough to be on the world stage" is so true. After watching and listening to the CCP mouthpiece here in Australia, the language they use and how they say it clearly shows that their mindset is 'i talk to, and treat, the Chinese people this way, therefore I can treat the international community the same way'. Not once have I heard any utterance from a CCP official that tells me that they have any capacity for 'Statecraft' or 'Diplomacy' at all. (A separate rant)..The concept of 'saving face' is at best, a way to not take responsibility for one's own actions.....very reminiscent of a Narcissist if it came from an individual.

Now you know how refugees feel when fleeing war. That's how I felt when we managed to escape my war torn homeland in 1993. A day before we were being shot at from afar and also had to stand in a massive crowd for 16 hours trying to board a ferry across a river (the bridge between 2 countries has been blown up on purpose). Every minutes is like an hour. You don't know if that bus is going to come to pick you up. You don't know if you are going to be refused at the next country border and maybe you will have to sleep in some strangers home (or worse, on the street). After a few days we were eating street food in a relatively safe country while waiting for relatives to pick us up. I was 8 at the time, my sister was 4, my mother was alone with the two of us. My dad was not allowed to leave the country. I cannot fathom what went through my fathers head. I know exactly how that flight of yours felt like. You are filled with endorphins, ecstatic, occasional tears of joy, hugging your loved one, kissing them. These situations change you forever. Even now, my wife, who has never experienced these kind of events, does not understand how I don't fuss over irrelevant things. They are irrelevant to me, because I know how bad life can get.

Everything from stop-and-frisk to shootings of unarmed people, the death of so many like Eric Garner with little to no punishment of the officers involved. Kalief Browder held in Rikers for THREE YEARS without trial, two of those in solitary, while being abused by guards and other prisoners until he took his own life. I'm a Taiwanese Canadian. I lived for 10 years in the mainland and went to Uni. there so I really understand. China has gone so far backwards. Recent news is that the Chinese gov. is hinting that the 2 Michaels could be released if the Huawei extradition case to the USA was swept under the rug, Meng Wanzhou set free. Typical Chinese CCP bullying. The CCP has turned innocent people into political pawns and accused them of espionage. I read somewhere that the lights in the cells are left on 24 hours a day. My prayers are also with your friend.

Decanta That's bad news. The CCP has also decided to execute an Australian who smuggled a small amount of drugs - after holding him for 7 years. An obvious payback for the Australian government standing up to them. What makes it more absurd are the Chinese drug cartels and money-laundering operations in our country, as well as dealing with 100s of drug packages in customs every day. There are spies on every corner and in every university. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

It was quite a violent scene and I am glad I had a nice big umbrella, which actually gave me the advantage. But that was IT! I went back to my apartment and purchased my ticket back to the states. The next morning I went to the office before opening and cleared out my shit. The few days after that were intense as I did what I could to get paid what was owed me and leave for good. I will never, ever go back. By the way, I managed to work in an 8-day stop in Thailand when I left China. Within two days all of my China "environment" created health issues disappeared. The constant coughing, soar throat, the chronic laryngitis, the stomach pain (food poisoning), ALL GONE! Amazing.
