I had heard of Cookie Gilchrist, but I didn't know he had been through and accomplished so much. Thanks for shining a light on a player that should be talked about more.

The name Cookie Gilchrist is new to me, but it's one I'm definitely going to remember now. It's hard to imagine why someone who had such a noteworthy role in the foundations of professional football is so rarely mentioned.

@@scizorbullet8185 it's true in this case I'm usually the first person to point out has nothing to do with race but when u talk about stories like this it's obviously because he was a black man in the 50s I'm surprised the NFL doesn't try to prop em up for public support these days tho

Where flemlo raps at?
Refusing the CFL hall of fame bust is sick enough, but having a direct impact on cultural change in New Orleans takes this guy to a whole nother level. It's great to see that his distrust of authority morphed into a much more positive quality and he became so headstrong going forward.

I wonder if they put him in after the fact.
Videos like this are why I subbed to KTO in the first place. I can’t believe how much influence this man had off the field, and what that has become now. Thank you, Karsten. And thank you too, Cookie Gilchrist.
I truly believe this is your greatest video to date. This is the kind of quality I find in productions on the history of the league made by the NFL itself. It felt like watching an episode of "A football life" or "The timeline". Kudos to you KTO
He deserves a spot in the hall of fame for sure, and I believe no argument can be made against this.
I have never even heard of this story until today. KTO, you constantly find amazing stories that I dont think every diehard NFL fan can find. Good video once again, keep on producing brother.

What an awesome story! Cookie seemed like a really good football player and even better person!
In a very indirect way he was responsible for a lot of the benefits players of all 4 major sports have today including equality of all races and penalties when contractual guarantees are broken by owners, what a legend
I think he needs to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He definitely changed the game

I've heard of him and my pops had talked about cookie and Ernie Davis and what great football players they were. But I sadly haven't heard about cookie Gilchrist in 40 years till today.

Why, because of what he did off the field? Sorry but for me, it's what you do on the field and his performance while good, isn't HOF worthy. If that's the case, I'm sure I can think of at least a couple dozen who should go ahead of him who were good but not great
@user-bq9ii9vz8e

Why would he be in the Hall of Fame? He ran for 4,000 yards. That's not HOF quality and that goes for others like Paul Hornung. Most overrated player of all time was Hornung.
RIP Cookie, what a great man and a even better human being🙏🏼🙏🏼
I knew Cookie! He was friends with my dad in the 1970s. My father owned a health food store in West Hollywood, and Cookie was a frequent customer. I still have a photo with him. Cute story. He once walked into my dad's store and opened a package of fig newton cookies and began munching away with a smile. I thought, wow, you've really earned your name! Very sweet man - and yes, big and tall. Taller, and bigger, than Jim Brown or O.J. Simpson. Great memories.
between Paul Brown, the NFL and the media, Cookie really got the "Dick Allen" treatment. That can wreck a person.
I have no idea how I have never heard of Cookie Gilchrist. What an amazing story, solid content as always KTO!!!
Cookie went to the school I go to currently. It’s crazy to think that a player of his caliber walked in the hallways I just walked in today!
You should do a video on Ernie Davis. The number one overall pick in 1962 that never played a down due to dying from leukemia.

Wow this is an incredible story. I have never heard of him before but it really does seem like he was an incredible player and pioneer of the game. He deserves much more recognition
First time knowing about Cookie was from a 1960s book that my father had. It featured the star Halfbacks/RBs in both leagues. Brown Taylor Paul Lowe Hornung Gilchrist I believe Leroy Kelly Gale Sayers Some others. Those older books can be gems.

I had that book it was called "The Running Backs" by Murray Olderman. Great Book. and yes Cookie Gilcrist was a great player.
What a story! This was way more interesting than I initially thought it would be
Cookie was one of the AFL legends.
Since my family moved to Western New York in 1991, I've been a fan of the Bills, even through the drought. So I've heard the name Cookie Gilchrist many times from older fans who remember the AFL days, and a large number of them would say he was as good on the field, if not better, than OJ Simpson was. But they rarely mentioned the off-field things. It doesn't surprise me though that Ralph Wilson would treat him that way. He was notoriously cheap and didn't really like paying anyone, especially at that time

Cookie had better hands than the Juice; and was a better blocker.
i never knew Cookie Gilchrist was such a character! what an underrated influence in football history
As a kid growing up in Buffalo, my Dad and uncle had Bills season tickets. I saw Cookie play in every home game while he was a Bill. He was the best running back in the AFL.
I got to see Cookie, on TV, when I was younger. He was the most dominant player on the field, amazing even at the end of his career.
Bro telling great stories here! Cookie helped start my New Orleans Saints. Bless this man, for real. RIP Cookie.
This has got to be one of the greatest Football stories I've ever heard. That's one hell of a man. God bless him.
Had never heard of this guy before this video. Wish stories like these were more commonly told. Great work!
Holy shit thats and incredible career on and off the field
I've watched your content for awhile now, this was probably the best video I've seen on this channel. It was both informative and educational. Extremely well done.
Amazing video, Cookie was a beast. There's some great moments and talk about Cookie from the 'Full Color Football: History of the AFL' part two documentary that are great to listen to. Though I do have to disillusion the video slightly, there was another player that was signed outta high school a few years later named Charlie Leigh. He had an NFL Films bit made about him a few years ago, worth a watch, though they too negate to mention Cookie signing an NFL contract years earlier. Great research KTO.
Cookie Gilchrist was a big power fullback who played on the original Dolphins expansion team back in ‘66. That was at the tail end of his playing career. He was a load, especially with the powerful AFL Buffalo Bills of the sixties.
This was an amazing video man, loved hearing this story
I actually had to do a project my junior year about local history and we did the Bills and I learned a bit about him while doing research for the project.
What an absolute legend. More people need to know about this amazing man. Thanks for spreading the word with this video.
You could also look at the 1925 Milwaukee Badgers - multiple payers for the team were high schoolers for at least 1 game against the Chicago Cardinals
I always knew who he was because I am a bills fan. But I never knew he had such an impact on the game. May he rest in piece
Never heard of him but he needs to be in the hall of fame & needs way more recognition
What a legend. Thank you for sharing his story
Saw him play when he was with the Buffalo Bills. Defenders were afraid to tackle him. Closet athlete to Jim Brown I have ever seen. He was truly feared on the field. Truly awesome athelete.
You should make a video on Ernie Davis. Perhaps the most bittersweet story in NFL history.
What a powerful story!! Thanks so much KTO for sharing his story making sure he ain’t forgotten 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As a young high school player in the sixties, Cookie was one. My favorites. A Sports Illustrated picture of him was on my bedroom wall with the likes of Jim Brown and others.
I remember seeing Cookie Gilchrist playing for the Buffalo Bills in the old AFL. He was a beast.
Wow I’ve never heard of this guy but his story is crazy. Respect to cookie Gilchrist. Great video!!!
This guy is a pioneer to do those things and stand up for himself in those days
I had one of his football cards when I was growing up. I don't think Paul Brown lied to him, Brown just didn't know the rules about signing players back then.
Awesome video. My knowledge of pro football doesn't really go all that much before I was born, so I only know of some of these legends of the olden days. First time ever hearing about Cookie.
Well, I was wrong about my call on your last video. Kudos to you for another banger video though 🙏🏻 If you have talked about Carlton Haselrig before, though, I'm not sure if I've seen it. His NFL tenure was short, but his journey there was interesting
Thank you for covering this. I sadly never heard of this man. The amount of courage this dude had is admirable. On a side note, what Paul Brown to him is unforgivable
kto always delivers
Wow, what an incredible dude. Thank you for sharing this amazing story.
This was amazing, this man’s life and accomplishments need to be known worldwide, banger of a video as always from KTO
What A Man What A Man and He Deserves To Be Inducted Into The CFL and NFL Hall of Fame For All His Accomplishments On and Off The Field He Is A Big Factor Of Today’s Four Major Sports R.I.P. 🐐
The new editing looks fantastic! Thanks for the great content!
Wow, I'm glad you told Cookie Gilchrist's story! I had never heard of him before. He sure accomplished a lot on and off the field! Standing up for himself due to the injustices he received is admirable.
Sarnia Imperials need to make a comeback. heard they used to have a pretty solid CFL squad.
Cookie really had a huge impact on the game by standing up for himself in a time the whole world seemed to be against him
Damn. They did Cookie dirty smh. You’d never hear about stuff like this if videos like yours weren’t made.
Glad ur posting again
Never heard of Cookie Gilchrist but I’m glad you made this video!! This is a special one for sure👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Never heard of this story before. What an absolute stud.
Great video! Thank you for introducing me to a legendary player.
Wow! Simply inspiring! Thanks for making this.
Along with Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and then Gilcrest. Wow no wonder Paul Brown was Known as such a Great Coach Back then?
Loving the new format style! Keep it up
I’ve been a fan for awhile Karsten. This video goes as hard as any of em. 💪🏾
I loved this video, thank you for making this
Very informative video man, great job
Subscribed great content!!!
For being such a legendary coach, it's amazing Paul Brown tried to get away with that. Like, he didn't think the NFL would notice that he signed an 18 year old kid in outright defiance of the rules?
Always love learning about new football history
I had heard of Cookie Gilchrist but I didn't know about the other stuff. Very informative!
KTO LETS GO. Stopped another video once the notification dropped.
One of your best, keep it up!
Ive been really enjoying the last few videos
Amazing video you’ve done it again
Great video, I never heard of this guy. Cookie was a man ahead of his time for sure.
The best football video that I’ve watched. Thanks for this.
This is an amazing video! Who knew this guy could have been as good as Jim Brown if only Paul Brown hadn’t screwed it up. Best football player no one’s ever heard of. What an amazing story
I never heard of this man but this man is a hero. He is a brilliant man and a great human being. This man belongs in the NFL and CFL Hall of frame.
This video deserves 2 million views. Absolutely amazing content.
Thanks KTO. Great video on an incredible man and player.
Damn that man lived a real life. Nothing but respect for him
Thank you for this video bro.
Very nice work, I recommend watching and understanding what's involved to become a stand-up man.
Another AFL legend that was lost to time, Charlie Hennigan of the Houston Oilers. The greatest undrafted WR in NFL history who was the original owner of the Single Season Receiving Yards record post merger, untill it was broken by Jerry Rice
I knew he played for my Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL and had one of the best rushing seasons in franchise history.
Great story I never heard of. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for posting this. He was my cousin and always stayed close to the family.
This was a great man ahead of his time I respect him more a MAN Rise in Power The Great Cookie Gilchrist!!!!!
This channel is so good
I learned a lot from this video. Thank you.
Interesting, thanks for posting
Great video we need a movie about this man! Incredible on and off the field
One of those names I knew from my youth but never knew anything about. Thanks for this excellent story.
Thank you for this video.
this video brought tears to my eyes. what a beautiful man and what a sad, sad reality we live in.
They man, I've been a big fan for a while, and you've helped inspire me to start my own channel. What program do you use to make your videos?
Great video. Can you do one of these on Larry Kehres? He’s underrated.
