Kerf Drum Co. makes drum shells in a way that no one else is even legally allowed to do in America. Andy's patented technology allows him to cut small perforations (kerfs) into a solid piece of wood that allow him to bend that wood into shape without the use of older steam-bending techniques. This technology also means that the finished drum only requires one small glue joint to keep the entire drum together. Paired with diecast hoops, a Trick throwoff, classic tube lugs, and a unique tortoiseshell wrap, this drum is a stunner. Let me know what you think of this thing in the comments!

Andy makes wonderful drums, and while some drummers compare them to the stave construction drums of brands like Tama, Pearl, and Sugar Percussion, they're so different! DW Drums came out with Super Solid shells years ago, which help create an incredibly thick single ply snare drum, but they use really expensive equipment to do it. Andy can make this drummer way quicker AND at a much more economical price than them. And where stave drums can fail at any number of seams on the drum, the Kerf is built with one super reinforced seam to help give you a much longer life to the drum.
Ply drums from major drum makers like Gretsch Drums or classic manufacturers like Ludwig Drums might give you a tone you'll love with your toms and kicks, but getting a Kerf Drum Company snare might be the ticket if you're looking for something to pair with loud rock OR country music. You'll never know until you watch this video and hear it for yourself!
Alongside the snare, I used a 1987 Yamaha Recording Custom kit in Hot Red finish that has Evans heads top and bottom. I've got Turkish Cymbals going here too - 15" Millennium hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, and a 24" Prototype Special Dry Extra Thin Ride.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I love watching videos of silly animals being silly.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

This guy can really play. Totally relaxed technique, indicating a lot chops he is not showing.

Yeah, he's doing it very smart from a business perspective. And the guy has the skills and personality to back up everything he's building (both physically and broadly as a brand)!
I love this video format. Super cool and interesting gear, informative, balanced talking and playing, and you clearly know your shit and are a phenomenal player. Love fresh content like this brother keep it up and others will see what I see!!

Jace, man, thanks so much for all the kind words. I’ve put off this KZread thing for so long, but it’s been a joy to make these videos. And it’s been super fulfilling to get feedback like this. I appreciate it!
I never thought about the snare wires choking out the snare side head. It's so obvious now! Maybe I'll stick to a 20 strand on my next order.

Good evening, I think that drum is fantastic. I've been playing since 1955. And I was born in Minnesota, unfortunately! So I will try my best to call Andy tomorrow morning. Just to check out the prices. Thanks for the info. And best wishes for your Channel. Sincerely jwm.😂❤

Thanks JW! I found Andy's current pricing to be more than reasonable for the product you're receiving. And he's a great guy, so I hope you two have a good conversation!
Using kerfs is a really cool idea for creating drums. I wonder if the sound at all is related to # of kerfs and thickness of the "slats" between each cut.

Yeah Andy was very cool. And his drums are great. My co worker I brought to the show sat down and played them. Andy had put together a video from the Chicago drum show showing different drummers in his kit.

Good mics in and out--an SE V-Kick and a Dr. Al Smith Alien8. Processed with ample EQ and compression. And when those signals meet he drum bus, there's room mic that adds space and even more natural punch. Then, all that gets hit with an API-2500 compressor to really help that kick shine. I hope this helps!

@@timbofromkeno wow. Haha. Thanks.
So if *my* wood starts out stiff but goes floppy, I can blame the steam-bending process? And does that happen to all drum builders, or am I the only one with ED (elastic drums)?

If it's cellulose, that's pretty flammable (try this at home). Keep the chain-smoking bassist away from this. And no setting the cymbals on fire for the encore.
