The NEW Sony a6700 for Landscape (vs a7RV!)

Ойын-сауық

Check out my landscape cinematic filmed on the a6700: • Sony a6700 | Cinematic...
Hey there! It's been a while, but I'm back for a very good reason. I’ve been fortunate to have spent the last couple of weeks testing out the long anticipated a6700 - the next high end APS-C camera from Sony.
I've tested it in a bunch of different landscape situations - taken it to a waterfall, got a great sunset at the coast, and even snuck in some cityscape photography in Perth, and I’m excited to run through some images and share my thoughts. I even ran a direct comparison with landscape king, the Sony a7RV so we can start to get a sense of what, if anything, we're giving up by sticking with APS-C in 2023!
Thanks so much for watching! Subscribe for more 👍

    Nice job with this review. You brought some features into light that others failed to point out. I’m considering this (and Fuji) due to the wide array of quality lenses available, along with the compact size making it good for travel and nature photos requiring extensive hiking. I don’t ever use video so only care about its photo-centric benefits.

    Thanks so much! Really appreciate it. One thing I didn't get to is the fact that it's just a fun camera to use. The ergonomics and user experience has improved so much in recent years - I'll be keeping it in the bag (at least until I've got to give this one back 😆), but because it's barely any extra weight and it's so fun to use.

    And not only for travel but also for a day trip in the nature with the family. Would be so nice with a smaller setup but I just need to think about only one SD card - that’s really the only major thing it’s missing 😅

    I've been using my A6500 for the last 6 years and its be a phenominal camera. From Landscape and Nature photography to Motorsport Photography. It's been a camera that has gone above and beyond what I needed it to do. I've always wanted a Full Frame camera but couldnt warrant the cost, this A6700 has truly captured my attention and I definitely will be getting one sometime this year.

    Honestly, if you've already got the APS-C lenses, this is such a good upgrade for hybrid shooters. New menus, new sensor, awesome AF, touch functions, flip screen, crazy good video specs. Also I complained briefly about buffering in the video, but after some further testing, in Compressed Raw (rather than Lossless Compressed) the buffer is actually decent with fast SD cards - thought that might be relevant for your nature and motorsport stuff!

    I also have the a6500 (about 5 years) and wondering whether I should upgrade to the a6700. It has much better focusing features. However, one loses the built in flash which have found to be quite useful for indoor photography. In fact, I like the built in flash better than an external one. Also, the “landscape” setting is no longer included. I’m wondering how I could get the same type of landscape feature with the a6700?? I take a reasonable amount of videos of the grandkids activities and generally they are acceptable (typically shoot 4k, 24p. I only use JPEG and video straight from the camera. Haven’t gotten into shooting raw and using external software for processing simply because it takes a lot of time and I’m not a professional photographer and really don’t think it would impress anyone in the family if the quality was better. Any thoughts and feedback on your reasoning for upgrading would be appreciated. Would it be better to buy some better lenses? I typically use the Sony F1.8, 24 mm and the Sony G F4, 18-105. I don’t use the kit lenses that came with the camera. I also have a Sigma F1.4, 30 mm, but don’t use that much because I prefer the 24 mm wider lens. Thanks.

On the A6700 you can select video or photo on the back but have a dial for 3 custom settings on the front. I was wondering if you could give a bit of an impression on using the 18-135 with this camera. I've got one with my A6400 as my primary walk around, "travel" lens but having retired and adding an A7Riv, that's been getting most of the use recently but the 18-135 and an A6xxx series is a good bit lighter and more compact.

    I can agree with your menu issues, but Cfexpress type A in this body with only one card slot at those prices is pretty much a non starter. I would have liked another card slot, then maybe a Cfexpress type A, but you would have to increase the body size, which would have increased the price of what Sony was going for. I would like to see Sony do what they did with the Fx3 and fx30 by taking a full frame body like an a7iv size and just sticking a cropped size sensor in it and then you could get all of the features you want at a reduced cost. This a6700 is a baby A7RV.

    Are crazy high photo frame rates something compact hybrid shooters are after? I've set my X-T3 to high frame rate capture once in my 3 years of ownership.. and then had to sift through thousands of images! - I never set it to more than 3fps now which is adequate for all situations I am after. If you are shooting sports or something mission critical, wouldn't you just get a bigger body with a decent EFV and LCD, etc? I for one am glad the A6700 didn't make that a focus, I have no use for the higher frame-rate on my X-S20, I wish the budget was spent on something more useful like weather sealing.

    Do you know if the burst images are forced into 12-bit Raw in the same way as the a6600 or does the new processor allow it to keep 14-bit Raw the way the A7RV shoots? I can confirm there is no blackout when shooting bursts, but the EVF does lag a decent amount under standard conditions. The lag improves a bit going to 120Hz, it improves further by going to electronic shutter and again by shooting in Compressed RAW. If you do all three of those things the lag is pretty well controlled - I feel like I could track a bird in flight with no issue.

    For video I actually think the a6700 is a solid winner - it does 4k60p without a crop and 4k120p, which is already better than the a7IV. People who are better at testing these things are saying that the noise performance and dynamic range is not far behind the a7IV, so for the price I think the a6700 is the better value option. Photo wise I think both are excellent, but it's hard to give any real concrete advice until we can properly test the RAW files. I suspect if you do a lot of low light or astro, the a7IV will be the way to go. But for general shooting the a6700 will absolutely keep up. For the price I'd take the a6700 and my only point of hesitation would be if you can find the lenses that you need in the APS-C range. Hope this helps!

    Hey Andrew I hope you are able to respond, I’ve been in the market for a camera at around this price range and my dream camera has always been to get the Sony a7c! But now that this little beast has been presented, what are your honest thoughts when comparing the older a7c ff camera to this newer feature filled 6600?

  • @andrewjclarke

    Hey! Great question. I've got such a soft spot for the a7C, because it's been in my bag as a backup almost permanently for the past 3 years and it's saved me on many occasions. The image quality is excellent and the size is great. I hate the lack of controls , the EVF and I really don't like using it for video - 8 bit codecs are a huge step down and I would always struggle to get it to match my a7SIII. All of these are fixed on the a6700. I think the a6700 is the better camera in almost all respects. Where I would favour the a7C is (1) if you've already got FF lenses, or you cant find the specialty lenses you want in the APS-C range (2) If you are big into astrophotography, I expect the a7C will outperform the a6700 (in part also due to the amazing FF astro lenses). I can't test the a6700 just yet for astro because we can't properly access RAW files. But I've got the APS-C 15mm f1.4 in my hands now to test - so a video will come to answer that question ASAP! Hope this helps!

    Great video, thank you for presenting a landscape photography perspective! Do you know of any remote shutter triggers (wired or wireless) that work with this camera? I’m not fond of using the buggy app that disconnects all the time.

    Bulb timer is half of what we wanted. Until the camera can meter beyond 30 seconds, you still either have to guess the exposure time, work it out in your head (not the best strategy when you've been out of bed for 30 minutes on a pre-dawn shoot) or, use an app. If you're using an app, might as well use the built-in timer that most long exposure apps have. Can't understand why cameras released in 2023 can't meter beyond 30 seconds ...

  • @andrewjclarke

    @andrewjclarke

    Yeah that's a good point. I'm might do some investigating as to why we're not able to meter beyond 30s - I agree, I don't see why this shouldn't be possible in 2023. Thanks for the great comment! I do like the option of having the timer being in-camera rather than on an app though - It means I can wander off, talk to people, visit another camera, check my phone etc and not worry about forgetting to end the exposure... which I have done many times in the past 😂

    @@andrewjclarke You'd think they could add it via firmware. I can meter for at least 30 minutes on my GFX100s (in manual and shutter priority) and it makes long exposures so easy. I'm not bagging Sony btw; I was a very early adopter having bought into the system with the A7r in 2013. Love my A7rV for action and wildlife.

    Nice and quick, but I thought you'd compare the images to FF images. My complaint about a6700 is low EVF res. Bumping that up to 3.69m "dots" would have made me jump at this camera.

  • @andrewjclarke

    @andrewjclarke

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment! There is a comparison with the full frame a7RV at 5:15, where you can take a look at the resolution differences between those sensors. But it's also using very different glass, so I'm not sure how valuable it is as a test 😆. It was more to just demonstrate that great landscape images are definitely possible! I'm holding off on any more in-depth/scientific comparisons (like dynamic range for example) until we can reliably process the raw files - but I'm super interested myself in how those tests pan out! Yeah shame to see the same resolution in the EVF, although the brightness and the magnification is up (at least from the a7C). Probably not a huge improvement over the a6600, but it is deeeefinitely a lot better than the a7C (I really hate the a7C EVF 👎). Cheers!

  • @andrewjclarke

    @andrewjclarke

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah the a6700 will be great for street photography - very light/compact with excellent photo features and imaging quality. I can't say which is "better" for everyone, but for me, the a6700 has much better video features, AI powered subject detection autofocus and has the benefit of interchangeable lenses (and I love have flexible, specialist lenses). But the Fuji has an awesome retro aesthetic and is really discrete - so I can see why people love it for street photography! The 26mp BSI looks to be very, very similar (it may even originate from the same design) between the cameras - so I would expect image quality to be very similar for photos. Hope this helps!

    Very hard to tell differences in a video like this especially when only out of the box jpg is used. The resolution is just to low. Also many people will use the cheap and not exactly good aps c line up of lenses with this body. There`s where the hammer really hits hard. You take a photo with the lens.

    Hi Matt, thanks for your comment. As I mentioned in the video, I was not trying to match settings, just to match the look of the images. Composition, exposure, colour and wave pattern is what I was looking at. I think the images look quite similar despite different settings and vastly different lenses! To me that's a nice indication that this sensor is probably going to keep up with the big boys and I'm very much looking forward to doing some more rigorous testing once there is proper RAW support for the a6700 👍

    I get that everybody and their sibling has a VLOG and a video-centric camera makes sense. I don't fault Sony at all for that. But what I don't understand is: Why doesn't Sony ALSO make an attempt to dethrone Canon crop-sensor for wildlife? Or at the very least, give us owners of the 200-600 G a crop sensor alternative for wildlife photography? This ALMOST makes the cut if it weren't for the slow burst and (comparatively low) MP density. It's frustrating in a real #FirstWorldProblem sort of way. The best affordable body for wildlife? Canon The best affordable lens for wildlife? Sony 200-600 G. Now that Canon has opened up the RF mount to 3rd party dev, I wouldn't be surprised if I wind up buying a Canon body and adapter before I buy a Sony crop sensor body.

    Sony readout speed sucks either in the R series, or the default series, Canon EOS R5 still does better with a 2020 older camera, Lumix S5 II does better too 20 fps like the Sony a9 stacked sensor... why do they keep it at a higher price ? They are just lazy to release firmware update to use the full potential of the Bionz XR so they use slow components
