The new Land Rover Defender 110

Can it sway a Defender devotee?
As a former Land Rover Defender independent specialist, and having previously owned and loved a number of classic Defenders, Rebecca Jackson is well versed in what makes these vehicles so special. So what's her take on the all-new 2020 Defender? Does it retain enough of the original's character and charm to appeal to fans of the old model? In this CarGurus UK review Rebecca tries out a Defender 110 with the D240 engine in order to find out.

- The seats do fold flat - The storage in the middle is a fridge - There rear view mirror is a camera screen so you can see behind you You'd think 6 months after all the other UK reviews have been out that you'd of seen any of the above mentioned on their researched reviews?

That's the problem of learning a car from only online reviews... - Her test car is a 7-seater. And in the 7-seater version you can't lift up the seat bottom in order to fold the back flat, because of the rails under the 2nd row seat that's needed to slide the seats forward for 3rd row passengers. Only for the 5 and 6 seats versions you can lift the 2nd row seats up to fully fold the seat backs flat. - Not all trim levels have fridges under the arm rest. It's an option you need to pay extra for. - When the front middle seat isn't chosen (ie. if the car isn't a 6-seater version), the rear view mirror wouldn't come with a camera unless you pay extra in the UK. And she is testing it in the UK. So, basically she was right about all three points you pointed out.

@@lovice and that's the problem with not really listening to online reviews properly. At 2:19 she clearly states that their test car doesn't have the 7 seats, meaning hers would fold flat. At 1:21 you can see the car is a First Edition like mine, which includes a fridge as part of the pack. Also when she opens the lid around 5:25 you can see the light ring inside of the fridge and the button at the back for the fridge on/off. I see your point tho, it is a extra but you'd think she would of mentioned that this model did have a fridge, like she mentioned that that model didn't have 7 seats. I was just pointing it out - not saying that it was standard or not a extra. As far as I'm aware only the basic Defender and the S don't have the clearsight mirror. The SE, First Edition, HSE, Defender X, Hard Top models and all 6 seat variants, come with it as standard, so with only 2 out of 7 models not coming with it. So basically you/her were wrong about 1 point. And I was merely pointing out that the model she was in had a fridge, and like the majority of models it has also got the mirror.

Lee McNeil well said. Agree with u 👍👍
1:47 - Whoooa. The rear seats DO lie completely flat! You pull the tabs on the two rear seat squabs, pulling them forward to lean against the front seats, then on the side of each side of the headrests there's a push button, which enables you to tilt the headrests forwards and down by 90 degrees. When you push the rear seat backs forward, the folderd headrests now tuck neatly behind the raised seat squabs and voila, you now have a large perfectly flat boot space. I've had my new Defender 2 months now and have done this a number of times to get all my video gear in. You also mentioned the high rear loading height - there is a button to the inside left to air-drop the rear of the car even more, to make loading easier. A bit more research wouldn't have gone amiss....

Great review! What’s the exact colour scheme of this LR in the video? I’m planning on buying one and this looks like the one for me!
I wonder whether this this will bring new customers to the brand or whether existing customers will just try a different jlr product. I do hope the former and I hope it makes them a boat load of money
This is how the new Disco suppose to be
Love the defender. However, these days. I do more city driving than rurally. I would still love to have it in my third car slot in my garage. It would be a welcome addition.
I am just in love with this car ❤
I keep configuring these things on the website and then complaining about the price but I'm sure she could talk me into it. :) She's definitely right about the Q7, that's unfortunately where the price point for the Defender usually lands. I'm in a 2018 Q5 so for me it would be a spartan build of Defender to allow me to make somewhat of a lateral move on price.
From Fraser, husband of Leslie I remember going into Royles, a Jaguar dealer in Wilmslow, and in chatting to the salesman, said that I regretted that the later Jaguars had lost the Jaguar "style". He said that the owners who liked the old style were literally dying off, or retiring and buying smaller cars, so Jaguar had to move on from the Jaguar of Sir William Lyons. It is similar to the Defender. At one time this was THE Land Rover, the name Defender only came decades later. I'm quite sure that if Jaguar Land Rover can get the car reliable, it will sell well. People who want a rough and uncomfortable off-road vehicle can buy the Grenadier !
The new Jimny is the new Defender 90. You also get 3 Jimnys for the price of a Defender. Also what people have to understand is that even though the new Defender (Discovery) is capable off road it can get very expensive to use all the way. Just have a look how much it is to add a winch and how much one of those bumpers with sensors will cost to replace.
very interesting... I'm thinking more towards the Defender 90 for me....
I love my land rover so much ❤❤❤
I have a thirty five year old 90, which is noisy and slow and I love it, but I would like one of these as well! 😁😁

Keep it, don't be brainwashed into buying the new'er one. How many ppl have complained about LR's with electronics in the past. I mean the Td5 and TDCi units are 'ancient' compared to the new fangled engines and one ECU was more than enough, but 85 gee wizz.

I own both a old defender and a new 2020 and I love them both.
You can use the camera for the rear view instead of the mirror. Also seats in the rear drop forward like most cars so the seat backs fold flat. Need to do more research for your car vids.
Okay I am probably an oddball, but can you clean out the interior of the vehicle with a firehose? All the Landy's I have owned or used, and that is a lot of Landy's, that is how we had to clean them because the mud and clay sets hard and sticks like glue. And sand everywhere. Can you hand paint over the dints and scratches that you will get without making a mess of it.
Nice Discovery.
Im 5' 4 -1/2'' That extra 1/2'' makes all the difference. Wipe clean plastic in the front, covered with carpet mats, makes sense.
I think JLR did a great job here. They had to advance the Defender formula or they might as well just keep trotting out the ancient prior gen since people can't seem to get over that. I would do the 90 series with some steelies and be very happy.
It's a huge leap from the original defender, can,t see too many farmers or builder's driving them. Personally I thinks it is just a rehashed discovery, only not as good looking. The old defender was a car of the people, couldnt say the same for the new vehicle. Nobody knows defenders like Rebecca, but it is such a different vehicle, yes it take a few styling cues from the old defender, but it looks like just another Chelsea tractor.
All Good Here !! 😃
You are the most lovely person that exists
I very like this car
Should swap the 'D' and 'E' letters on the bonnet lip for 'O' and another 'F'
❤❤❤ I love you Land Rover defender 110
The best part about this review is that she's on the shorter side! Seems all the car journalists are 6' or above, and their back seat analysis is skewed based on THEIR driving position.
I’ve been customizing them since it’s launch and I noticed that Land Rover reduced your liberty to customize the car through implementing packages, instead of individual options, unfortunately. Nevertheless, it’s still fun to customize one.
Crying in my tea. Yes, I can see the benefits to this new vehicle but, couldn't they have given it a different name? The old version is iconic!!!
I love your carreview 's 😊👍🙏 and I think that defender be my next huntingcar 🤗soo nice. Goodby from 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪

This review was 3 years ago and I’m thinking of buying a used Defender 90…I’ve had LandRover products before and their reliability and general quality has been awful. Are there any long term owners that could share their reliability experiences, to give me some peace of mind (or otherwise?!)
Rear seats do fold flat and entry models do not come with electric seats or steering wheel.
@lovice

On the 7 seats they don't. Only for the 5 seats and 6 seats versions the 2nd row can be folded flat. In the 7-seater there're rails under the 2nd row seats, whereas the 5/6-seaters have fixed 2nd row which allows the bottom part to be lifted up in order to fold the seat backs flat.

@@lovice the defender in the video was not a 7 seater. Like I said, the seats will lay all the way flat. Also, most people don’t realize that when you fold the second row down in a 7 seater if you really push the seat down hard it will lock into place and it’s pretty much flat at that point. There’s a slight step up but it’s pretty small. Most people fold them down but never go ahead and give them a good push to lock them down. They will lock down flat.
Offroad drive?
Becca 😍😍
Looks great but res look reliability issues abound. See TfL horror story.
What about the reliability...?? LR/Jag unfortunately is down below somewhere in the list...! But how will this fair..? And yes. This is more of a Disco than a defender . What say you...?
The weird bitterness and jealousy still going strong in the comments! The negativity and criticism is quite bizarre, mainly from people who have never driven or will ever own one. How many Times will TFL be mentioned?? Yes they had a management fault, the US Dealership couldn’t rectify it and then wrecked the upgraded new replacement. The incompetent US dealership is Hardly JLR’s fault. It’s a brilliant car
Most buyers will upgrade to the S model because you get alloy wheels, coz you know it's never going to see a dirt track let alone go off road. Another Chelsea tractor. The backing music is so Dave Gilmouresque (Pink Floyd)

The new Defender is “almost” as beautiful and easy on the eyes are you are! It certainly is a great utilitarian vehicle, but two things concern me...one is the history of reliability of the LR cars (or trucks, if you wish), and the other thing is the cost. Some of the things that are options on this premium-priced vehicle just should be standard equipment.
Looks really like a skoda yeti
Let’s hope it’s more reliable than other Land Rover products. I wonder my they like Toyotas so much in Africa!
Normally love your reviews Rebecca, but this felt like you didn’t have your heart in it or hadn’t done your research 🧐 Firstly you didn’t fold the rear seats properly, hence why they weren’t flat Thought you might of showed how you can lower the rear with those buttons for easier loading , especially if you’re petite like yourself Then your downside of rearward view, just like an old Defender , you clearly haven’t seen or wanted to show the ClearSight rear view mirror/ radio antenna camera , which more than helps I’ll put this down to a bad day at the office Please keep up your usual good work #StaySafe 🦠😷
this is not a defender, this is a discovery...
I prefer the modern design language of the latest Land Rovers
Got to the bit where she said the seats don’t fold flat and quit the video. If she gets that wrong, what else is she missing? Very poor review this.

Deliveries were meant to start early 2020, but Covid delayed customers getting their car. If deliveries started early 2020, the change to 6 cylinder diesel would not seem like such a big deal. For a vehicle of this size / weight etc, the higher torque out of the 6 cylinder diesel is much more appropriate for this vehicle.
This isn't a defender. Wouldn't trust it on a safari, wouldn't trust it on a farm all winter without some electrical component shitting a brick. Defender has always been about the most practical jeep that will get the job done and not break down or if I did break down, the average farmer can get it going again. 🤷🏼♂️
Your last bit of conclusion (after mentioning Q7 and XC90) is surely describing a Discovery. Just call it the Discovery 6, and admit Discovery 5's exterior design was a failure. Job done! If LR was really thinking about replacing the old Defender, they should've made something close to a modern medium size pickups (eg. Hilux or Ranger) which are basically the 21st century farm and low end military vehicle. Obviously LR is incapable of making such a vehicle (both money and capability wise). So, they should've told the world the Defender is dead. Full stop!
