I think the biggest problem people have with the new Defender is the fact there's very little on it that can be fixed mechanically in the middle of nowhere, such as half way along the Canning Stock Route or the Okavango Delta. I understand the reasons JLR went down the route they did, but that's why a lot of NGOs and Utilities are ordering Toyotas. Too much electronica creates unreliability where it is least needed. I like driver aids, they're useful in a whole host of situations, but they are no substitute for driver skill. You also need to be able to turn them off when they get in the way. How many drivers on the road these days even KNOW to turn into a slide on snow, for instance? Possibly the fault of the DVLA for not insisting on better driver training, but we don't see snow nearly as often as we used to so people don't get as much opportunity to learn. The new 90 is a looker though, I'll give it that. I'd have been all over it like a bad rash if they'd called it the Discovery 6 or the new Discovery Sport.

It is a great new version. The electronics and computer systems are still working out many bugs. Do the reliability issues have anything to do with the amount of drinking present in the design and assembly culture? It was an issue with Detroit.

I love the new Defender, and would own one if I could justify it, but you do have to admit that it has given up quite a bit of repairability. The old ones could be fixed with twine and chewing gum, this one will need electronics and air suspension when it goes wrong. That still means that for the vast majority of owners, even some who get off-road regularly, this new one is better, but there is a group of people who will still need the old one... or a Toyota.

I like the new Defender especially the Defender 90 but I wonder how capable it actually is off road and in extreme conditions compared to the old Defender 90 and 110. I’ve seen old Defenders drive through water obstacles with water filling the entire inside of the vehicle and up to the drivers chest and continue out the other side and kept on going. I somehow don’t think this new Defender would do that and keep on going. If it did make it through it all the electrical components would be ruined. In extreme off road situations it’s sometimes better to have the old basic technology over the new high tech systems that are destroyed by water and other things.

If the Defender was iterated over the years to keep up with tech, like most models on the automotive world, 90% of the fan boys wouldn't be slagging it off. Admittedly at first I didn't like it, but slowly it's been growing on me. If I could afford I'd be buying the base model straight away, I live in rural Oxfordshire, sick of pot holes, like the ability to transport larger objects, maybe I won't be going green laning, but I like the idea of having a vehicle I know that I'll have a better chance of not getting stuck should the occasion raise. I hope this works out, electronics aren't like Lucas electronics and is reliable.
