FIRST DRIVE! New Land Rover Defender Review 4K | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s finally here! The all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender. And we've got our hands on a lovely Pangea Green 110, before the smaller Defender 90 comes along next year. But being such an iconic off-roader, we couldn’t just do a humdrum review. So Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix decided to go on an adventure - across Namibia - for a test drive to remember.

    The only automotive journalist Top Gear have is Chris Harris (one of the best in the world) and he'll tell the truth about a vehicle. In the "taster" for this video (released a few days before this video) this guy (Jack Rix) actually said: "Africa - what a country!" Do you think though that it has completely missed the previous defender market and tried to appeal to the disco market ? I personally would have liked to see something a little more basic than this so as to keep the price point down, and maintain its previous appeal with just a few modernised inclusions to make able to be daily driven. unfortunately they have fallen victim to just catering to the general SUV market with a few in market tricks to give it some basic off road prowess. I just think it’s too much for what it should have been.

    That's because any off-road person would point out that this is the Discovery that they screwed up the last time and it does everything the current Disco does. They both carry up to 7 people, they tow the same weight, and they wade in the same depth of water. Essentially now they made a proper Discovery and screwed it up by pretending it was a Defender or that it was any more capable then the cars they already sell. This car needs a face lift, it needs an 8 passenger option, and it needs to be called Defender 120.

    I understand the hate when it comes to the new cast of Top Gear that are trying really hard to be the old cast but this guy is just there to do a job and he’s doing it his way, not trying to be Clarkson, Hammond or May. I don’t understand the negative comments about the car. Yeah the video is a little salesman-y but when you look at this car, it’s absolutely perfect. Not only is it respectful to it’s heritage, it’s also a real player in the modern market because unlike any other modern SUV, it can do anything. You can go hardcore off-roading, you can use it as a truck and haul/tow stuff, you can drive it daily and you can even take it out on dates. Land Rover has created the perfect SUV.

    @@TheJPHarvey Time will tell. You have produced a vehicle to replace the Defender but you chose not to have solid axles? You have filled it full of electronics? The competition, Land Cruiser 70 series and the Mercedes G Wagon have stuck with ladder chassis and solid axles. Even the new Suzuki has stayed traditional. Now you either work for JLR, in which case you are in trouble for insulting me on You Tube, or you are a liar. The test for this vehicle is let it work in Africa for 25 years and see if it lasts. It will be dead in 10 years. We shall see how many Australian farmers buy it? If they break down in remote areas it can mean death for them. Are they going to trust all those ECU's? I can't remember how many but as you work for JLR I am sure you can tell me. It's more than 50 per vehicle I think. When I say go Off Roading, I don't mean a bit of Green Laning, I mean driving in Africa or the Third World. The new Grenadier will prove the original Defender design was correct. Have you ever driven in Africa?

    Good footage. Well done JLR for daring to publicly put the new through its paces off road, even if ot was a short trip. Most true 4x4 owners are very sceptical about this new Def, given the previous one reliability short comings. I hope JLR continues to dare prove the models reliability by doing proper overlanding expeditions. This should up the critics. As much the overlanding community loves its Pajeros/ Shogun and Toyo 70 series, we 'd all be delighted to have more comfort and everyday practicality. The big one is reliability, can ot survive 3000 km off roading. Kimberly trail next?

    @dadventuretv25384 жыл бұрын

    I have a 2016 LR4 (Disco 4) with the HD package (off road package with locking rear diff and low range). It is my primary and offroader. I do light to moderate (green and blue) and occasionally mild black diamond trails here in the Appalachian mountains in eastern USA as well as beach driving. Put Nitto Ridge Grapplers on the stock 20s and Johnson lift rods (2.5 inch), and in process of getting some 18 Compomotive wheels. Moved the spare from underneath to in the boot. It does just as well as any other veh out there (many that are way over modified for the trails we run ) and is neither more nor less reliable (although compared to some it’s been more reliable). No issues yet and 105K miles in it. The new Defender is basically its replacement, as the new Disco has become Explorerified. Things about my LR4 that drive me nuts as someone that wants to use it offroad and that Defender needed to fix: 1. Wheels. Those damn 20s and lack of lots of aftermarket options. I understand that we won’t get 17s because of brakes for towing and I’m cool with that, but damn it make 18s available as an option with new delivery. Defender fixed that with one caveat- the 18s aren’t available on six cylinder. Fix that JLR. 2. Tires- ok we’re gonna put on what we want, but it would be nice to be able to get some type of offroad capable tire at purchase so we don’t have to do it immediately. Defender fixed that. 3. Spare underneath- just dumb for an offroader. First thing you have to do is move that. And getting an aftermarket tailgate, while possible, is a pain in the ass. Defender fixed that by putting the spare where it freakin belongs. 4. Winch- again, not available at time of purchase and you can get them aftermarket for LR4 and install, but veh clearly was not designed with them in mind and it’s a pain in he ass. Defender fixed that. 5. Good cubbies but lack of tie down spots. Defender seems to have added even more cubbies and fixed tie downs issue from what I could tell crawling around one at auto show. 6. Rock sliders- again, not available at time of purchase and limited in aftermarket although available. Looks like Defender fixed this but need to confirm that what look like rock slider step rail on website are indeed that. On Defender they made the angles a bit better which is nice, increased the wading depth a bit which is nice, added this new configurable terrain response which is cool- there are times I wish I could just push a button and only lock the rear diff without changing everything else which I can’t do (I have to go to mud or rock crawl to engage it) but I understand I could configure a setting in the new second gen to do that so that’s cool, and they have this new low speed cruise control (whatever they are calling it) which is nice but I don’t really care too much about. I use hill decent on some really rocky decents because it does more than I can do with just a brake pedal, but I like using my right foot on flats or ups. With the terrain response also adjusting throttle input it really allows you feather the pedal in low range and rock or mud, not requiring a system like this, imo. So these updates are nice but not crucial imo, unlike the other things I listed. So my take is if you want a comfy daily, maybe you need or want a little badge cache, need to be able to tow more than 5K pounds but don’t want a pickup, want it to be good on road and especially long trips, and dont plan on doing hardcore rock bashing or double blacks offroad, this is probably a better veh than others that may do the hardcore offroading better but will suffer in the other areas- especially the towing. As an aside, I got my LR4 specifically bc it was one of the few options that was good offroad and was capable of towing more than 5K pounds as I have about 6K pound boat I tow. Whether you like the looks or not, well that’s personal preference. Re reliability- remains to be seen and I know Im waiting about 2 years before I consider getting one to see how it goes, but the old unreliable LR shtick has not been true on LR4s at least, and hopefully won’t be for its replacement either. And the legend of some other companies has fallen off recently in reality, although myths persist. And some other offroad brands that people love have about the same reliability ratings as LRs overall. So you just never really know.

    @Righteous I'm Aussie... different Toyota spec. We had 4.7 v8 good reliable motor but costly to run (early ones had couple problems) no car manufacturer are perfect but Toyota play safe " simple, use parts from previus model (if ain't broken don't change it )

    TG: "The diesel is perfectly fine. And let's face it, it's probably the one you're going to buy." U.S. Market: "They won't sell it to us with the diesel." Also, you got to drive the 6-cyl with steel wheels (upon review it appears they switched in and out of vehicles and it may not have been a 6-cyl with steelies). In the U.S. at least the 6-cyl only comes with larger brakes that the steel wheels won't fit over. Nice to see the mounted decent off-road tires with the Goodyear Duratracs. From what I've heard LR sales/marketing types will typically rattle off lines about how their vehicles are "tire immune".

    Why is everyone complaining about rhe presenter and saying it should be Hammond? Hammond has a video of the new Defender on Drivetribe and this is Top Gear magazine so even if the original trio were still with Top Gear they wouldnt be in this. I think this is a great video.
