New Land Rover Defender. On road. Off road. With Tiff Needell

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What's the new Land Rover Defender like? How does it compare against its predecessors? Should you buy the old Defender, or get the new 2021 Defender? What's it like on road and off road? Tiff Needell, previously of BBC Top Gear and Fifth Gear, tries it out for size!

Sorry to be that guy, but the Defender didn't get that name until 1990, not 1983. It went from the Land Rover Series III to just the Land Rover 90/110 in 1983 then in 1990 for the launch/update when the 200tdi came out it got changed to Defender 90/110

Having owned an old Defender, I scoffed earlier this year at the new incarnation. Then I purchased the new P300 version six weeks ago and I've had to eat my hat. It's just superb. I went for white steelies so I wouldn't get to precious about ruining the Range Rover style alloys and they suit my rural area much better.

The new Defender is certainly not a Discovery. The new Discovery (Disco 5) is more of an entry level Range Rover in terms of luxury, the new Defender isn't. Get over it. @@gc2234 Beg your pardon? No safety regulations in Aus what are you smoking? Christos point is there are so many electronic settings in the all terrain system if they malfunction your cooked. It’s not as if JLR products are actually reliable either. Just look at the TFL channel and their brand spanking new Defender lol.

Lovely shots along the Malvern Hills! I worked at LR for 10 years, and can't help feeling they should have made a small Defender for people living in the city - isn't that why the 90 is popular in London? A sort of City Rover/90/Evoque mash up that's luxurious to be in, but can deal with parking knocks. BTW, an Evoque is on the limit length-wise here in NYC for street parking.

Enjoyed that Tiff, it’s one of the few vehicles I’d swap my Cayenne S diesel out for I think. I tow regularly and it off roads’ almost daily BTW but it’s also great on a euro tour. Don’t fancy either RR, RRS or new Disco but this Defender Disco would do.

@@Khalaxe well not exactly as some models were well over 55k new. The price of the new commercial defender will be around the 30k mark.Again this reflects the large spread of prices of the old one 23k-60k.

@@andyhunt457 Still cheaper dude, that's like me saying the new one is 100k because it can be, you are making the old one seem more spenny than it is. You go from the lowest price, respectively 23k for the old one 45k for the new one.

I was looking up why the original Landy was created this evening for some reason. Apparently, one of those reasons was that we had to ship most of the 200,000 Jeeps that the US had lent us to play around with during WWII back to the US between 1946 and 1948. Well, it was called "lend lease" I suppose. But who would have thunk it!

You can't beat a Tiff review. Keep 'em coming! I really like the look of the new Defender, it's modern can do all the old one did but a lot more comfort and can handle being on the normal roads at speed as well. I am sure old Defender purists hate it, but I think Land Rover pulled off the impossible.
