That’s the best bass I’ve ever played. Super comfort and it’s light and unbelievable good!
The black tuners are just a small touch but ooh I love it

Marcelo Feldman - The Bass Wizard Does the black have a higher chance of rubbing off, though, i.e., are they plated (or well plated, if so?). Thinking about getting the 2020 4HH, burnt apple...
One of the best bass guitar reviews I’ve seen, excellent job!
Sooner or later I'll buy one.... amazing bass...
Thanks for this review and demo Marc. The bass is beautiful, you playing, inspiring as always.
3:33 full EQ display 6:53 slap with variating parallel / single / series mode 8:17 low B (all pickup configs) 8:55 pick (in parallel) 10:44 has 22 frets ! sounds good with chords & solo arrangements 11:46 reggae tone 12:24 tapping 13:05 harmonics 13:40 about the G string slipping off the fretboard edge
Sounds really good, one of my favorite basses for sure. Thanks for the review, you rock!
I'm very impressed with the sound of the StingRay Special, all the way around. And I've always loved the sound of the older SR5. Thanks for your review!
Wow that is gorgeous and sounds great . My old Fender 5 weighs a ton .
I've got one since 1997 , nice return to the drawing boards, It need it, looks like a great update , cant wait to try it out.
Great review and detail for settings, understanding of preamp Marcelo. Thank you!
Awesome video man, its a great bass, looking forward to your next video ❤️🤘🎸
Great review, sir! Really enjoyed your video!
Great Bass! Awesome Video! Amazing Bassist!!!
Absolutely Bassilicious Review....... I got one a Month ago and I LOVE it! ☮
I love when gstrings are pulled off
Such a joy to watch this, great demo great walkthrough-talkthrough of such a revised legendary bass. I own 2 stealths before the adjustments and love those instruments. Great player, great bass great review keep'm coming
Great stuff man! You're a great player!
thanks for the really thorough review. I have a 2007 Stingray 4H and a 2000 Stingray 5 H at the moment. The 4H is a pretty eye catching colour and I thought I could go back to a 4 as my go-to-gig bass but I keep looking at my old gloss black/maple 5 and thinking " this thing can take on anything I throw at it'. Now I want to upgrade to a Special and I have to choose between the 4 and 5 string... right now I'm thinking 5 with all that extended range, especially if its lighter!
Great review - Because of you, my charcoal sparkle/ebony 5HH arrives Tuesday. I can’t play it like you can (but then few can!) I’m already thinking its gonna replace my J as my go-to gig bass. Thank you!

I was waiting for the reggae section. You were the first video on demoing this bass with that EQ setting. Thank you!

...and this day of 21/02/2021....I bought one.....the New Enie Ball Music man Stingray Special 5! I'm one of the luckiest guys now...!😉😄
thanks for the Review!👍
Great review and i so glad that they cut the weight of the bass down..:)
Beautiful Bass.
I have one of these in Burnt Apple. It's an amazing bass!

Bish Runyan I luv that color, too - do you have the H or HH??
Funny though that the roasted neck technique was firstly applied to the Sterling basses, if I’m not mistaken? I have the black Ash with the white grain and a single pickup and sounds fantastic!! You can plug it directly into a mixing table and no tweaking needed ! Fabulous for the price 😳
I got yesterday mine. It's an amazing instrument! I chose black with maple fingerboard, because for me it's the most classical color for a Stingray. The sparkle finishes are pretty cool, but I ask myself if in 20 years it will old fashioned (remember those green, yellow and pink from the 80s?). I heard you just get same quality if you get a boutique bass, there's no series bass comparable. Now I'm convinced that's true.
Yes getting ready to order one of these when available but still deciding between the black and raspberry burst.
Hello Marcelo. Thanks for the review. Could you make a video about what is fx loop and how to use it with effect pedals.
Sounds excellent
I might keep this bass in mind.
Awesome vid... Thanks for sharing =D
Well done Bass Wizard
Excellent review. Great job! Is it just me? I tried out one of these at my local Guitar Center. Honestly, although the lighter weight, cool new finishes, and roasted maple neck were nice bonuses, I really wasn't happy with how the sound compares to my 2001 EBMM StingRay 5H. Something was definitely missing. The paradox is that the heavier body and heavier hardware contributes to the sound of the older StingRays and makes it feel more like a premium bass, in my opinion.

just hoping they make sterling versions of these! Sure it wouldn't include all the bells and whistles, but just the redesign and light weight would make them worth it.

Sterling could be done with a neo pup and the new body contours. That alone would make for a nice upgrade on the current ray34/35’s
Nice bass
Very well made bass !!!----
i have a 2000 SR5 and have never had a problem with the G string coming off the edge
Great Great Playing Marcelo Feldman......
I bought the green one last week. I like how little it weighs, that the sharp magnets do not protrude and the sound when I play with fingers, but the sound of Slap is much nicer and better low on the Sting Ray 1992.
Waiting on my hh 5.. Couple more weeks for the new color
I wish I could afford it .THERE SUCH A COOL BASS
Very nice. Sounds like they've toned down the treble boost range so it doesn't get as gnarly as on my Stingray Classic (Hence I never have it full up) Also MM compensated nut seems like a good idea, does this model have one?
Anyone else like the 5 more than the 4 because of the pickguard??

Actually just the opposite. I've never liked the shape of the 5-string pickguard. beyond that, they are great basses though. But the classic 5 looks way better in my opinion.
I'd like to know if compared to the Standard 5, "sustain" is improved on the Special or not
The roasted maple neck seems to mostly just give it a smoother finish, not to mention look sexy as hell
I'm sure you could pay extra for a custom color/fingerboard/hardware choice, but I noticed on the Ernie Ball website that all of my favorite colors have either rosewood or ebony fingerboards. If I had an extra $2000.00 laying around? HD Yellow, maple fingerboard, black hardware - yes please.
Have been trying to decide Sterling vs new Stingray, but also recently learned about Sandburg basses from Germany. Have you ever played one? They have a 0 fret just below the nut. Look like very high quality also.
The so-called single coil mode is a series with filter? I thought that this actually uses a single coil (from the humbucker) and an additional hum cancelling dummy coil to cancelling the hum in the Stingray 5.
Love the color just wish it had a little smaller metal flake
I think will not buy a bass with two batteries...but...I love the Stingray 5...and have two...
They are roasting the wood before they are building the neck from it. This way they are getting rid of the moisture in the wood and the neck will be less likely to bend if it is exposed to humid environments. Do you know if all sting ray special do come with a roasted maple neck? According to ernie ball's website it seems so, but according to some dealer websites it just says maple neck.
Awesome as fuck!!!! That color does really well with the black hardware. It's a keeper. Great review. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
halo, nice review you got here... need advice what do you think about stingray 5 with piezo or without piezo pickup. which one is better? and if you have to choose, which one you prefer more? thanks
With the Stingray Special, it seems like Musicman wanted to bridge the gap between the tone of the Stingray and Sterling. Your thoughts?

Question...why would you not get the one with two pickups? Wouldn’t you have more sound options and have more versatility?

I like the classic sound and look of this one, and the extra spacing between the pickup and neck make it better for slap.

The differences are subtle, but I found ebony to be a little bit brighter sounding than rosewood, but not as bright as maple. I like it.

Marcelo Feldman - The Bass Wizard And, as bassists, the middle between 2 extremes is what we specialize in!
Roasting the neck solidifies the sap and removes the extra moisture from the wood. It's supposed to make the neck more stable. Nice review what is the actual weight.
@TristanJCumpole
5 жыл бұрын
Not true. Torrefaction breaks down the cells that otherwise take on or lose water in response to the environment. I work with this material in industry. Marketers or anecdotes might tell you about solidifying the sap or removing moisture, but it simply isn't so. There's a science behind the whole thing which doesn't even have its origins in the guitar market :-)
@thecappy

@@TristanJCumpole fair enough I'm no expert. I only know what is on the manufacturer's websites. So it does make it more stable but not the other things.

Yo Marcelo, (and guys on here) IJA...How long did it take for u to get used 2 tha 5 string v 4 string? Also how often do u use ur B string? I'm thinking of switching 2 a 5 string but tha times I played them I kept hitting tha low E by accident 🤣! As a 🎸ist I got led n2 playing bass on my trax cuz I knew what wanted 2 hear and I played/practiced my parts on guitar then transfered them ova 2 bass. Anyway I always wanted a 5 string n thought it'll take a min 2 get tha feel of not hitting tha B string since I use or alot of passing or dummy notes lines r me hitting tha E string. Any suggestions wud b Great, Thanx! ✌🏾👍🏾🙂

I’m learning as I age-time to move my existing stuff to the younger crowd so they can have/afford an awesome bass and I can get the updated stuff.
price ?
Why buy a Fender American Elite Precision Bass at $2000 and hope for the best, when someone can get perfection with a Stingray? Love my 5H and 4HH, 2018 Special arrives Friday!
I’m having trouble differentiating the tone between the parallel, series and series w filter. Could someone help describe it with words?
@babayaga1767
4 жыл бұрын
parallel is more mid scooped. fat lows crisp highs. series is more mid punchy.
On a scale from 0 to 20, how much would you rate this bass Marc? And how much would you rate the "old" version?
@TheBassWizard
5 жыл бұрын
They are both fantastic, high quality instruments. I prefer the lighter weight of this one though
The ebony fret board not only looks great but has its own unique sound character. I have this same bass in the 4HH version with the ebony fret board and also have a 4H Special with the rosewood fret board. The rosewood sounds more woody, mellow and rounded whereas the ebony has an almost piano like harder attack, is a bit more focused and a bit brighter. I really like them both but lately I've really been digging the ebony fret board, and not knowing how long EBMM will have it available ( seems to be only on a few select basses and lately fewer) I thought it wise to grab one while I could plus I avoided the price increase. The maple fretboard has its own unique sound character also, perhaps I'll try that next.
All this new stuff and neglect fixing the bridge- some lateral adjustment would solve the G string falling off the FB. So close...
Roasted maple necks don't need sealing, so you can feel the actual wood under your fingers
What year is this model? I thought 2018 brought significant changes, but 2020 did as well...or did they just offer new colors in 2020??
@diaphanoux
4 жыл бұрын
That's right. All specials are the same, they just brought new colors now in 2020. Ghost pepper, Dropped copper, burnt apple etc...
Best guitars in the world. Bass or otherwise.
MM 5 strings have narrower string spacing which I don't like personally.
@jonmuir13

this is a great bass, but it's not the same ... ideally one would have both the retro Stingray and this model.
IMHO, it sounds more “open” than older models.
I'm considering getting one of these, but I often find there's a lot of fret buzz on the demo videos I see. Is that a setup issue, or is it an issue with strings/scale length, or something else?

On your review of the older Stingray one of the dislikes you mentioned was how close the G string was to the edge of the frets and the shape of the frets. Has this improved at all or is it still a dislike on this latest model?
@jonmuir13
5 жыл бұрын
Jim Cox it’s the same neck profile.
Roasted neck is a way of drying the wood to have an equivalent of a 300 year old wood and that’s the magic of great sounding. There is zero absorption of the harmonics and that’s what brings the price down too ! Like whisky, the older the better!!! Woods are cut off and stored. When a guitar manufacturer orders his wood, depending on the age of the wood, price of neck will vary from a ration of 1 to 50x Also, the body of the newer version is not made of Ash but more exotic wood. I would rather have a heavier wood such as Ash.
I hear a lot of frettbuzz. Have you given the bass a proper setup allready? And I don't hear any difference soundwise. This may be because of KZread. There are anvils and lighter ones in the old series. I am happy to have two StingRay 5, one with AlNiCo- one with a Ceramic Magnet. who are 4,2 KG and 4,4 Kg - and a StinRay 5 Classic who has 4,8 KG. I love those roasted necks. They cook out all the moisture of the wood and cristalize the sugar in it, so it gets more stable and is able to deal better with climate changes. And it looks and feels so super sexy! But I've heard of issues with the "new" necks, issues that have not been found on elder special series of the StingRays with roasted Maple Necks. Like doing the opposite of what is persumed of roasted maple, like they do react to climate changes, at least the first 6 - 8 month. The issue goes away by itselves.
@andreshuidobro2489

Its very hard to hear differences because of youtube compression. But its hard to believe they sound the same because the magnets are different (alnico vs neodymium) and the preamps are different. Many who have played both say the new ones are mellower/sweetier and the old ones are more agressive/edgier. It would be very interesting to hear what Marcelo thinks.
@punker6506
5 жыл бұрын
The fret noise you hear is probably because he has the action SUPER low. It actually wasnt very bad compared to some of the reviews i see on youtube. Personally i like my action pretty high so i can have better dynamics. Low action makes slapping and tapping a lot easier but i dont do any of that stuff.
@davidmorneau5260
5 жыл бұрын
If you have low action of course you will hear frett buzz on any basses! I do not enjoyed high action because its barely impossible to play faster stuff and do slapping with a great sound.
Whats the price??? It is very expensive?
Call me crazy but I think I like my ray 35 better; I find the specials has a little bit too much treble and mid. The ray 35 gets it just right imo. But man oh man I want a white with gold trim HH stingray five special.
Again no left handed ?
Great player and review, I just wish for once someone would mention actual weights rather than just 'lighter' or 'heavy' etc. For instance, 11lb is a 'heavy' bass but it's 'lighter' than 13lb 😂
I've never seen a 4-string bass review with a 5-string bass before. 👏
