Nice long awaited review Lobster. I recently picked up this bass in Tectonic Blue Sparkle with an ebony fret board after having some issues with the Olive colored Sterling HH Indonesian version. I was trying to get by on the cheap with an HH in my bass arsenal but it wasn't working for me. This is by far my favorite bass and I think it is well worth the extra price. My favorite position is still the Stingray parallel position and though I have another Special in the classic 4H configuration there is something about the way the ebony fret board sounds on my 4HH that gives it an edge even over my 4H. The knobs on both my Specials have a quality weighty feel to them and the tuners are the best I've ever used not to mention the superb flawless fret work.

Awesome! Congrats Glenn! The Sterlings for the price are solid, but they do not compare to the higher end ones or the US counterparts while stock. I haven't tried one with the ebony board yet, but I want to! Enjoy it :)

Your musical test piece should be entitled 'drooling in the key of A'. Seriously though, that Music Man a very 'bling-y' looker of a bass, with the tone to match. That 18v preamp is really stout. I can see why it is your favorite. In the words of Monty Python, "and now for something completely different" I'd love to hear that Jerry Scheff Lakland I see on the wall during your intro. The inner coils sound (position 2) is so goddamn funky. It has kind of the vibe of both a 4001/3 and a jazz bass but not quite as scooped, almost like it's a J-bass neck pickup with a Rick bridge pickup.

Any chance you happened upon a Darkhorse? I came across one but passed up the moment. I did however play a Stingray Special 4H Jackpot (black sparkle with gold hardware). It was the most magical moment I had experienced with an instrument since 1992, the year I came upon my first Stingray. Needless to say, I visited my local store Huber & Breeze (plug) for a set of Super Slinky's and ended up leaving the store with two sets of Super Slinky's. One set in the package, the other set on that bass. :). The prices are up a couple hundred since you posted this video but these basses are worth every penny.

Hi Lobster. A point to check on this bass. Watching on screen, my TV actually it looks to me that the neck might need relaxing and re-setting. There appears to be more fretboard exposed between the E and the edge of the board? More so than on the treble side. Also the strings are sitting right of centre of the neck pickup poles. I think relax and shift the neck over a smidge might sort both issues?

Looking into getting one of these but none of the stores that carry MM have some on hand, so i would have to special order one, im conflicted between the H and HH. That said, there was a 5 stringer in a used music store that i went and checked out today (im looking for a 4). A few things i noticed was 1) the pickup spacing for slap is problematic on the HH for me, but im not a huge slapper. 2) The G string was slipping off the fingerboard because it was so close to the edge and the fret slope being around the same area that is left. Have you noticed this happening on either of your specials on a 4 string version? or is the fretboard a bit more generous with more room without the extra string crowding things. Personally i thought the Pre-amp was surprisingly tame for a 18v preamp. On my warwick i can go to the extremes where there is so much treble its obnoxious, and i dial it back from there, but its there if i need it. I wonder if this is by design though because i definately couldn't get a bad sound out of the bass. I was also hoping the 5-way switch would be more dramatic of a tonal difference but i was mainly interested i the classic stingray tone of just bridge, then potentially the jazz style coil tapping (i mostly play jazzes now), overall there was a change but the position for bridge and that JBass tapping sounded pretty similar to me (which sounded great!) so im leaning towards the classic single pickup one! Anyways, thanks for all your videos, not only are you thorough and objective, but I just love your personality and enthusiasm you bring to these videos!

Lobster, I’m 90% sure I’m about to take the Stingray plunge-that Amethyst Sparkle finish on the 2021 Special with the gold hardware is making me salivate-but I need that 10% extra push. I come from a P and J background, so I’m wondering if there’s anything you think Stingray noobs should know. Thanks!

@@LowEndLobster Wellllll, there's the rub: I'd be selling my Am Pro II Jazz Bass to get the Stingray. :-D Basically, the Stingray would be my one and only. Hi Lobster! Your videos are so delightful, helpful and right on, you're the "best bass channel guy" on KZread! 😉 Can i asked you how much worth this Stingray 4hh Pink Champagne? I saw a few place they were selling them for 2799$ US, is that correct? It's something like 3500$ CAN without taxes, custom fees and shipping! I have the chance to pull the trigger on one, mint completely like new condition. I did listen to this video at least 3 times and i'm blast completely about the sound, the look and of course your review! If you tell me "GO AHEAD BUY IT" , then you know the rest! Another You Tube guy did a review comparing a Stingray H to the HH. His verdict was the HH could not do the single H pickup sound and that you could not slap on the HH because the neck pickup was in the way. I don't agree with him owning both the H and HH as I get the tone and no interference slapping, but he proclaims himself a wizard and really disses the HH in his video. Please do a video comparing the H and HH. Thanks.

Thanks David! You bring up an excellent point. So I know of the video you're talking about and that statement is somewhat right but only in a very specific circumstance. When looking at the USA Stingray H and HH (NOT the Stingray Special H and HH mind you), from what I understand the HH had the humbuckers wired in series when the full humbucker was engaged (positions 1, 3 and 5), where the regular Stingray 4 H is wired in the traditional parallel config. For this circumstance, the dude is absolutely correct. I have not played or looked at a Sterling Ray34HH but I know the Ray34H is wired in parallel. Now in a more modern context with the Stingray Special basses, these are wired in parallel for both the H and HH. I did a comparison video with mine which you can see here- kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2qEsLitobSafco.html
