    Fantastic video, Thomas. I'm a bit surprised at the raspy sidetone but other features make this overlook-able (for me anyway). I was watching carefully to see if your manipulation of the paddles might result in an inadvertent bumping of the VFO knob...it appears not, but can the VFO be locked to prevent the possibility of that happening? Also, I've seen whip antennas with a swivel-type base - maybe this would be preferable (or an alternative) to the fixed 90-degree BNC connection some have mentioned...? Thanks for the contact & 73!

    Thank you, John, and it was so great putting you int he logs! (This reminds me--I need to insert your video in my field report!) So far, I don't think I've bumped the VFO but I do think you can lock it. The sidetone has grown on me, actually. I kind of like it now--unique to this radio. From what I understand from Wayne (I asked the same question) you'll find no antennas with a hinged base that can fit that large of a screw-on connector. I do think he's working on a small 3D-printed adapter that would give you the same effect, though. -Thomas

    I don't think the schematic is published. I saw another interview with Wayne Burdick in which he said they chose a superhet design to minimise receiver battery drain, it runs at 50 to 70 mA, they can't get near that with SDR.

  • @ThomasK4SWL

    It is superhet. It all had to do with a design that could keep the radio fully-loaded under 16oz. (it's 13oz). It does have a 4 pole crystal filter with variable widths. I'm not entirely sure if he's published the schematic yet.

    It will have an internal logging mechanism that will store data internally. You have to use a USB cable to export it and build the log file, though.

    Does it have Bluetooth for earbuds?

  • @ThomasK4SWL

    @ThomasK4SWL

    No Bluetooth inside. Bluetooth is very difficult to implement with CW radios because even the latest Bluetooth versions have enough latency that it makes the sidetone lag your sending. The IC-705 uses the latest BT version, but it can still be a bit odd to use. Your brain can pick up that slight latency pretty easily.

    So far I can only say that this transceiver sounds horrible both on RX and TX. The option for a square wave sidetone doesn't sit right with me. It might be "ok" if you're looking to operate this radio without earphones but still, I'd get tired quite soon. On the receive side, every video I've seen so far seems to show a quite saturated and distorted AF stage with strong signals. Pretty much what happened to the QCX without a the AGC addon. Still, from the video it seems there is in fact a fast AGC occurring so my guess it the audio stage is indeed distorting. I'd love to get my hands on a KH1 and hopefully prove myself wrong.

    I’m under the impression Elecraft is working on the sidetone. Funny, but I really pay very little attention to sidetone characteristics as long as I can hear the sidetone. If I hear it, I’m good. The filter between my ears just accommodates it. This is why I rarely ever even change sidetone frequency on my radios and why they’re all different. You should check out some of my latest KH1 videos to get a better idea of audio--in those, I used an external recorder and even and external speaker. Sound much better.

    @@ThomasK4SWL Indeed Thomas, I just checked your latest video on the KH1 with the audio recorded through the line out and there are no issues. It seems the built-in speaker is the culprit (which is odd in my opinion, for the price of this rig). Yes, I'm guessing they opted for the square wave sidetone to make it clear when operating portable with all the noise possibly surrounding you. I'd say there is room for improvement, maybe an optional software switch between a sine and a triangular wave if one needs extra buzz. Thanks for the heads up!

    Yeah, as I mention, this is mostly the limitations of the internal speaker. It was never designed to handle the insane pileup I had. It's a "bonus" feature only. Check out my other KH1 videos where I use an external speaker and recorder.

    Keep in mind that the starting price for a KH1 is $550. That will get you a five band general CW radio with options you can grab later if you choose. Also keep in mind that this radio is both designed and manufactured in the United States. This is the cost of US labor, benefits and living wages. I like my money going to innovative companies that support domestic production. To each their own, though. We've so many cool products out there now. :) There's never been a better time to be a ham!

    So as I mention in the video and field report, I didn't have my logging tray yet, so logging without a support for my notepad would have been challenging. This is why I used the picnic table. I've an upcoming video where I use the logging tray completely pedestrian mobile.
