The new DLC makes CK3 more HISTORICALLY ACCURATE

Grab Atlas VPN for just $1.83/mo + 3 months extra before the BIG DEAL expires: get.atlasvpn.com/HistoryinBits
The new Tours and Tournaments DLC will add exciting new features to Crusader Kings 3, like a new travel mechanic. So in this video we looked at travelling and communication in the middle ages, and why the addition of the DLC's new game dynamics will make the game more historically accurate.

I'm pretty sure next year's big expansion will be on imperial-tier systems, so we will finally get the Byzantine Empire mechanics we've been waiting for, maybe some expanded Papal stuff, and my bet is: itinerant court mechanics for the HRE. This update provides the groundwork (travel mechanics), and the itinerant court is such a glaring omission from this DLC, that the only reason for its absence is that they are keeping it for the imperial expansion.

This video nicely summarizes some of the thoughts I had while reading the dev diaries and watching the feature breakdowns. This will make the game sooo much more historically accurate and will make gameplay outside of war so much more interesting. Historically speaking a concept of a permanent capital in the Middle Ages is a bit controversial. Less so for the late middle ages, as capitals definitely emerged over centuries. But initially, the cities/castles that later became capitals that we know today were just the main residences of a monarch where he was resting with his court between travels. Finally, they is a way to actually govern your realm through itinerant court. It sounds great. Now, I hope that in the future they will include coronations in this system. The coronation of a Holy Roman Emperor in Rome should be a grand journey topped by an even grander ceremony.

Thank you for the good input! You’re right, capitals as well as clearly defined borders developed after the high middle ages. So states then were conceptually very different

One thing they really need to fix is gathering armies. The current way the game plays, you can raise all of your troops in one central rally point (say in your realm capital) in one day, which is utterly absurd. If a king wanted to summon an army in medieval England, he had to wait for troops to arrive from different parts of the country, and this could take a rather long time, as it could take weeks to gather an army from the whole of the kingdom. Levies should need to be raised at their local rally points as seperate armies and then actually join the main body of the army. Stationing men at arms in various holdings should mean they can only be raised in that holding. No more ridiculous magicking vast armies out of thin air. This makes sense since if a civil war broke out or an invading force landed, the first thing that may meet them may not the full royal army but instead a local/regional force, as happened for example with Harald Hardrada's invasion of England, where the Norwegians were met first by Earl Morcar's force and defeated them, before being defeated by the royal army at the battle of Stamford Bridge. Also I feel that vassals should play a greater role in defending their lands. If you declare war for a county, it would be reasonable to face the forces of the local Earl, Count, Lord or Duke as well as, or, depending on the circumstances, instead of, a royal army, since this is what would have likely happened historically.

The itinerant court makes sense when the king is essentially a warlord, even Julius Caesar describes holding court to settle disputes in friendly Gallic towns in between his campaigns. The Mount and Blade series would likely be a better way to represent an itinerant court, though I have not played any mods that do so. Warband has a court in a single fief, which can be moved to another fief by expending the right trade goods, but the only governing that can be done from the warband itself is calling armies on campaign.

The only downside of that DLC is that when your king (let's say viking king) is raiding the Mediterranean in his army , he can't participate in tournaments near his armies , only the capital is taken into account.

I think implementing a more itinerant court might cause more technical problems than anything. Sure, the system might work for individual characters or parties of characters on a pilgrimage, but to oversee the movement of all those courtiers and keeping track of them all might have unforeseen effects on other parts of the game. Granted, I might just be a negative nelly, but sometimes I think Paradox has to straddle the line between historical accuracy and how the player experiences and has fun with the game. Some of the more realistic features might have to be omitted because they simply aren't fun

Sorry if I am being rude but can you please make another video on the Byzantines because as you may notice in the comments it was not really at least at some parts the most accurate video like in the part where you are talking about culture you are referring to Turks in Anatolia in 1066 before the battle of majikert and ther settlement in Anatolia and ther was a lot of stuff that you could had mentioned now I will be fear you did say in the comments about some of the inaccuracy’s and that I am a greek/Bulgarian/aromanian from Greece makes me biased and in general for a English man like you to talk about Byzantine history you want bad but still I believe that if you have the time please or remake the video or just upload a new video I wish you are talking about some of the mistakes tnx

@Deilen-SheThey no its too slow. Godwinson made it London to Stamford Bridge in 4 days. 180 miles or so in 4 days (which was very fast for the time) he then marched back to London in 8 days and from there to Hastings some days later.. It takes you 3 months in game to make the same march from York to where Hastings would be in county. The in-game movement speed is far to slow. In game Armies move at about 3 miles per day when they could do triple that at a slow pace.

Oh and we have this problem with our people having abandonment issues, so if you say anything that makes them believe you are abandoning them, they become angry yandere like they were to teachers until teachers elected Youngkin, a Republican. Dreadful emotional issues I am sure any European will instantly notice from such Americans.
