The Neurologist said "HE CAN"T LIVE LIKE THIS!!!

After Nick became nervous and upset in the Neurologist office today, the Dr suggested that he take anxiety meds. She told Shannon that, 'HE CAN"T LIVE LIKE THIS!"

I always used to go with my nephew and his parents to the Drs. They would quickly check, Anthony and I would take him to the car while his parents talked to the Doctor.Unfortunately one time he got upset and punched me in the eye twice! He is 34 and he takes alot of very strong medicine . They put the pill on a spoon with chocolate syrup! Now the medicine is giving hi m kidney trouble. He also had to get his heart checked and liver. His mo and dad are 71 and 77 and we all worry about his future. He lives at home with mom and dad in Oakdale. He attends a program 4 days where he is basically babysat. He is so smart but so much like Nicky. It's not easy but I really admire your family plus Sam. From Cyndy in Centereach ,he loves to give me a hug and kiss I am the only one he does.

I’m so sorry to hear that. It can be really difficult to be the loved on of someone neurodivergant . Especially if they get upset easily . You hate seeing them suffer (but also hate being punched in the eye.. I’ve been their with my sister. Her attention seeking was extremely aggressive) I hope you all can find a great place for him to live and strive when his parents are no longer with us. You’re great for helping out! ❤

John & Shannon you guys are doing absolutely amazing. As autism parents we know more than anyone what is good for our kids. You guys are so down to earth and show your true colors, I love watching your videos, it releases some of my own anxiety and stress. I recently took my daughter out of ABA therapy, and it was a hard decision but most importantly the best for her, she is thriving naturally and she is so happy!!! And for us that is truly what matters. I homeschool her too!! Go homeschooling families! 💙 You guys are awesome.

I hate that Shannon and Nicky had to go through that at the doctors office so unreal that some doctors think they know everything I’ve been to some like that and I just can’t go back. But looks like he ended up having a good day after that.

Nicky, i'm stealing your catchphrase here for a second buddy but i'm so proud of you. All of you, for getting through such a troubling experience. Nicky, Shannon - huge kudos for riding it out and enduring it until the end. You deserved better but to get through it just shows the almighty strength and heart you both have. John, i know it's tough having not been there and wishing you were but Nicky and Shannon knew you'd be there if you knew and are always waiting at home, physically and metaphorically, for them. Remember, it wasn't your fault and not one of you has to apologise for this day. Not Nicky, not Shannon, not John - none of you. I hope the rest of the week is amazing for you all and again, we're all so proud of you all and always cheering you on from the sidelines!!

It is so funny how your lives parallel ours! I took Jason to the doctor yesterday (March 22nd), we had a long drive through intense weather to and from, and long anxious waiting in lines and in several different rooms. Jason was loud and repetitive with his questions and phrases and kept hitting his jaw with the back of his hand. I feel for you with the experience of going through the guardianship process. We became conservators of our son, and it took three years and $3600 to do it. Fortunately, we have a long-term psychiatrist who was able to complete all of the necessary paperwork. I am curious to know the age range of the neurologist you dealt with, as I have noticed that the younger doctors seem to assume Autism will be exhibited primarily as Asperger's and are not always prepared for our side of the spectrum. Bravo Shannon, us smaller moms taking our giant sons with Autism anywhere is a site to behold. I feel your anxiety and am so proud of your tenacity. You both are awesome parents!

That’s really interesting what you said Shan that the frontal lobe of your brain doesn’t finish maturing and growing until you’re 26. I was never told that by my GP who prescribed me Zoloft when I was what 21/22 and I’ve been on it ever since and I’m now just shy of 2 months into being 26. I get shaky hands, tension headaches and jaw clenching as side effects. I’m now on 150mg daily which was 200mg daily just over 6 months ago. Do I really feel the difference being on them and not, I’m not even sure. But do I know when I havnt taken them for 2 days, without a doubt. I actually hadn’t taken them since Saturday and only today did I take them (long story short I havnt had the energy as my pharmacist hasn’t been able to get hold of my adhd stimulants) as Ive has not energy to get out of bed and been sleeping a ridiculous amount. But yeah I do find it very interesting, the conversation about SSRI’s. I think with being a nurse I’d find it so interesting to hear your opinion on it all

I can totally relate to what you went through. My psychiatrist originally wanted to take me off of my adderall my advocate and I negotiated with him on just lowering it. The dr wouldn't listen to me that the only reason my bp is high is cause of my anxiety with going to appointments. He doesn't care about my mental health at all. The funny part of it is the fact my bp went from 153/93 to 129/83 then down to 93/83. I would love to see him wiggle himself out of this. My bp issue isn't med related at all

This is the perfect example of medical model vs social model. Medical is fix the person and make them 'normal' where as social is adapt the environment to allow everyone to access it. Nicky doesn't need fixing he needs accessibility to allow him to access things.

You could tell Nicky’s receptive language wasn’t as strong as some days today- and I bet they was due to that upsetting appt he and Shannon had. People don’t realize the impact they can have on someone. Sorry you had to deal with such crudeness.

You guys are doing a great job. Advocating for our Autistic kiddos is critical. This video got me thinking, although the neurologist (surprised he didn't see a psychologist or psychiatrist) stated what doctors know the most about and that's meds. Now in some instances meds are necessary to improve quality of life or save your life. We as outsiders don't know all the dynamics and what Nicky is fully capable of. What I do see is that he is teetering on the edge or anxiety a lot of the time. I'm wondering is that just his body language and voice stims that seem like he's quite edgy at times. I wonder if meds was something to u would consider ? Perhaps he could do more, go more places. You said he used to ski, he doesn't do that anymore. Maybe he'd be more willing to go to the dentist, go to a program, etc. thanks for sharing, I hope you all had a restful night.

I def agree that the Drs bedside manner seems quite gruff, however I do think that her suggestion to explore an anti-anxiety type med for Nicky may be something y’all look into further…..not for y’all but for Nicky’s overall well-being, especially since Nicky seems aware that his behavioral responses in certain situations are not “OK”. While the Drs delivery of the message came across as rude or uncaring, and I’m not excusing that part, her sentiment that Nicky cannot live that way forever is the truth. There is going to come a time when you & Shannon are no longer able to control the environment completely to insure it keeps Nicky calm and it may be for the best to explore adding other tools to his toolbox like medication, exposure therapy, etc…..slowly of course, so that Nicky has the proper tools to learn to manage his own emotions.❤️

I follow Carrie Cariello and Adrian Wood who both have sons with autism. They both say their sons anxiety is the worse part they deal with when it comes to their autism diagnosis. It’s the most debilitating part of the diagnosis. They also started on anxiety meds and feel it made a world of difference in their ability to do more. They could see the difference in ways that parents just know. It’s like that sigh of relief that they feel when more in control. Everyone of course has different views based on their child’s needs. I do know they have neurologist who specialize mainly in autism. I think maybe reach out to them privately and they would be glad to help. I know you speak of Asa of Fathering Autism and I believe he put Abbie on anxiety meds. Puberty is a really hard time for all teenagers. We as adults take antidepressants everyday and no stigma needs to be attached. Mental illness is a disease just as diabetes so why not treat it .

Wow. Color me surprised a neurologist recommended prescription medication to a Neuro-Divergent young person. Long story made quick-my little sister suffered from some major ADHD/behavior issues ( I noticed before my parents did.) When she started kindergarten, the school told my parents she needs to be seen. Not by a therapist. Not by a doctor and therapist. No therapy period. Just the largest amounts of Ritalin you can give a 5 year old, twice a day. She had some intelligence issues as well, so she was taking all this medicine , at 5, no therapy, and got warehoused in the public school system. She dropped out of education in the 4th grade… and that’s not even the beginning of what has happened to her in life… I’m 100% for the use of medication… when it comes to that. And some day, maybe, it will benefit Nicky. But I’ve been watching y’all for almost 2 years now. Nicky has come a long way in his motor skills, his independence, his speech, even his health. He’s def lost weight, and he seems to like to work out. I’m not a doctor, but you can’t put everyone in a box and you MOST CERTAINLY should NOT be pushing for psyche meds after a FIFTEEN MIN INTERVIEW WITH A ND PERSON.. Jesus..
