How do we get Nick in and out of the pool at LA Fitness if he's with Bernadette or any other female comhab support staff?

I took care of my handicap wheelchair bound dad for many many years. I am female I found it easier and less issues with other people going into the men's room with him. The men were less offended with me being there than the women with my dad. This usually happened when we were going out to eat and I would inform the staff I was going in there and they would warn men I was in there with my dad. But this dilemma also happened other places. I found men more accommodating than women believe it or not.

Oh my gosh, so relatable! When I take my son anywhere, he needs to use the restroom. I don't know how I would deal with your situation. Jason's father is an aquatics supervisor at a city pool, so when Jason is with his dad there is no problem. I am working on a membership to our local gym so that I can take him a few times a week. Now that I have seen your video I will make sure to inquire about their locker room situation. You will probably be fine with taking Nick through the women's locker room, and if the gym has a policy that is inclusive of all gender identification, then it seems an easy stretch to include our families' situation. Thanks once again for helping us parents to navigate through this Autism adventure. Hugs!

Everyone remember to SMASH 💥 THE LIKE BUTTON (it really helps in the algorithm) and sun! Also, don’t skip the commercials. It’s a short 15-30s usually and it helps them if we watch them and don’t skip! Let’s get Nicky TV to explode , especially with Nicky home now. We are getting more content than ever before- videos are longer! Let’s show our luv in return! Any thoughts of going back to ‘lives’ on Fridays?

I was raised by a single Father, I know from experience this is a tough situation. As a gym goer, I would not be okay if I saw a random man in the dressing room, however in this situation I would fully understand. I think anyone with a heart would understand. If the gym knows Nick, and his needs, I do not see any issue.

This is why I love family changing areas here in the UK - - Ok its not everywhere but 70%. Maybe an email to the relevant authorities or company. Explaining the needs for special needs families. CC in governors and relevant people for your area to highlight your plight ( im learning more in my Union training ). It won't happen overnight - but your advocating for your son, and this can help hundreds, maybe thousands in the same boat. One voice can become the majority.

This may not be helpful but when c Ovid shut out pool changing rooms our kids had to come from swimming clubhouse wet. We bough a dry robe to but overheating suit. He could wear one home and take his suit off and be covered. Our changing rooms are now open and they all search robes so much quicker for kids .

This is quite a topic! And there are already many folks in your comment section saying they can relate, so it needs to be talked about. I hope I’m not saying the wrong thing, but what if what’s going on in the ladies locker room is a lot for Nicky’s eyes. We had a locker room with showers at work and sometimes less modest women would shock the socks off some of my more modest coworkers. That was just a thought. Also, I will be taking the young man that I’m caring for swimming and didn’t think about this! So thank you!!!

Maybe, just a thought, due to the severity of the situation and constant stress that is affecting Nicky, you could put him on 5mg olanzapine gradually, over a couple of months. I expect Nickey would become calmer and more attentive and communicate more. And anxiety would be gone and you would be relieved as everything has impact on you too.

I understand you guys concerns about side effects, but you would know if the medication isn’t worth after you try. If you see any negative effects from the medication than you can stop it. I think it’s a great idea to try after watching Nicky being so anxious in most videos. I know I don’t see him all day, but the medicine could help calm him. Just thinking of you guys.

I understand, however you can’t just start and stop these types of medications. In addition, these medications only reach their full potential when rendered in conjunction with therapy. Which nicky cannot verbalize his feelings. Believe me, if there was a magic pill the world would be a better place

Personally I'd be looking for another place to go. There should be a "family dressing room" available. PS: we also noticed that when our son was having anxiety issues we could NOT talk about him in the third person while he was in the room because he felt excluded. I know that he may not be able to contribute but can you try to incorporate him in the conversation? You may be surprised that he may have some thoughts on the matter.

I think you are forgetting that it’s not about getting a stall in the women’s locker room so women won’t see Nicky changing. It’s about getting to a stall in the women’s locker room without Nicky seeing women changing. As long as his female “helper” scouts out before entering and exiting with Nicky they should have no problem with anyone.

They aren’t trying to use inclusive standards as a justification. They are trying to figure out how their child can go thru his schedule with whoever is working with him. For individuals with disabilities who have support needs, like Nicky does these are the thoughts and challenges that families face. This video demonstrates what families go through when trying to make the world accessible when the design is not accommodating for everyone (LGBTQIA+, individuals with disabilities, etc.). As they have shown on their channel, Nicky enjoys and requires a schedule and changing that schedule is not always acceptable.

Can’t a female staff member walk through and see if the women’s locker room is busy and if so, maybe discreetly say we have a special needs male who has to walk through quickly in a minute I know they are being nice but they have to find a way to fix this. They just be in compliance w the ADA. They MUST come up w a solution. I’ve been out on disability since 2015 and unfortunately there’s a few times I has to play the ADA card. I don’t like doing it but you must be ADA compliant in this state and country. Let LA fitness figure it out. The workers go through the bathrooms to enter the pool area? That seems odd. There is no other way to get in? Just as they have to have a way for disabled people to get in the pool (stairs, a lift, etc) they must find a way for Nicholas to get this accomplished.

As women, we tend to be more understanding and aware of...I don't think most of us would even bat an eye at a young man like Nicky coming through or using the ladies' locker room. I've seen young men with different abilities in ladies' bathrooms with their guardian or caretakers, and not once have I been offended or upset

I'm sure there is so much more that goes on during the course of a 24 hour period than what we see on your videos and it appears Nick does enjoy his swim time. But Nick is now an 18 year old adult male with special needs. Maybe he needs more challenges in his day now that he's no longer enrolled in school. i don't mean to come across as snarky but his day seems to consist of swimming, making hamburgers and phone blue. I'm just wondering what his future looks like in preparing him for the world now that school is no longer an option for him.
