The bar is set very low indeed.

Matt shared the microphone with my daughter at the Columbus song. He letter her sing "Rylan you should try and get some sun." It was so awesome! Yesterday she bought a fish. She named him Rylan

the album version is good. but this performance is way beyond.

Album version is great musically and fits well the album style, but Underwater you're almost free If you wanna be alone, come with me Sounds very pathetic and blurry to me, while "Is it easy to seem so grand, Wanna be alone in la-la-land" Is more fair and very close to me. Same with the line "Is it easy to live inside yourself?" While it is almost as good as "... inside the rope", I empathize KEXP version much more. And they lost the rhyme with the "Everybody got nowhere to go" line in album version. Anyway, both versions are good and I never get tired to listen to both of them!

plus that guitar at 1:13 which plays more often. I really missed that in the album version. It became more subtle, nostalgic-like, but meh

I'm a Rylan 92'

I listen to the album version on spotify. But god damn i always get stuck on this version, I just love the quitar, the drums and all the little details that this version has to offer, Beyond perfect!

I love The National and this song is beautifully written and performed ...you can see how Matt and the band really care about each other and the music and are putting their heart and soul into their performance up close. That is what makes good music something that you can relate to and love.

Bryan Devendorf carries The National....most distinctive drummer out there.

The cadence of this song is so unique and haunting. Even the backup vocalist is having difficulties synchronizing his harmonies with the the lead singer because of it. Beautiful song.

Definitively the best version of this song.

So, the reason I prefer the studio version is because of the change in lyrics: "Underwater you're almost free/If you want to be alone, come with me". As someone who attempted suicide by drowning, that hits home a little harder than the lyrics in this version.

This is so so so so SO much better than the album version. I genuinely am not understanding what Matt thinks Stables and Tindle add to the song that wasn't there (if not better) already, but a lot of decisions on the new album have left me scratching my head as I try to enjoy the core of what it is.
