rooferkim i am so glad you found and like The National. My mother is 71 and likes them, my daughter is 22 and saw them live last night for the third time in the last three years. They are without question my absolute faves, after 15 + years of listening they still [implorable emotions] make my eyes water!

Yours is the best comment I have read on KZread, in like, the longest time. Thank you, my friend. The National have been my absolute favourite band for a decade and yet today - 7th November 2019 - is the first time I've ever landed on this song! I've since learned that it's an ode to a long-ago Scottish song, but Matt's voice and the boys musical arrrangement, is over-welmingly - beautiful. Long may you keep enjoying them, as I do.

I got to experience this performance in person. I don't have much for words, but it was amazing. It's better heard in this video/clip, but the atmosphere that night was amazing. Huddle up among like-minded music-loving humans, in between concert stages (even though this was the only going on), and very little wind in the bottom of a river-bed near the Chippewa River.

I am just moved and blown away with tears streaming down my cheeks. The sound ,the emotions of this guy...I wasn't expecting this. i had forgotten about this Civil War Song( I've heard it was originally Scottish) until I recently watched a clip of Lead Guitarist G. E. Smith of Saturday Night Live House Band in the 70's talking about first meeting Bob Dylan. Then weirdly enough I came upon one of the The Grateful Dead Versions just 2 days ago and now THIS. I am 68 , played (piano) and have listened to many versions of many Songs from long ago to present. But NEVER something this Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for transporting me back to The Civil War Days (or to Scotland), a true love lost , and s broken Heart best 7 mins and 12 seconds in quite a long time. An excellent surprise. Love this and will share with many Thanks for Posting this !

I heard a fair amount of them doing those covers at ExC. The collaborative efforts also made it the most energetic of years. Of course each year has something amazing to it - seeing John Prine in the pouring rain was a one of a kind experience!

This is dope by all measure, that guitar solo notwithstanding. But what I really like, is when your man walks off after laying the vocal down for the first measured bit of the song there, then he quenches his thirst. I feel it was a still well-iced drink. I felt those ice cubes hit my own teeth. It was watery; the drink was watered down. It was likely whiskey and water. Or a watery whiskey. I want that it was.

heartbreaking and so true...a young poor soldier on his way to war falls in love but is rejected for his lack of funds then loses his life and is barely mourned....300 years old or did it happen yesterday..??

Timeless . I wonder if he ever could've imagined for one min -- that his story would be so loved ,and still told over and over and over again . 300 year later we are still a sensitive ,human race - mourning his ,heartbreaking loss and feeling his pain....
