    Hadley Kennedy Meh, it’s a few billion dollars to send a few tons, manned or unmanned, to the Moon; add a few more fro equipment able to distinguish glucose from Moon stuff (plus keep in mind Ralph said *ON*, not *IN* - ‘hear they, Ralph ! ‘Hope you were as specific as you wanted it to be ! -) And to delete a specific Internet meme, you’d need an AI powerful enough to skim through AAAAALL the Internet, and hack through private servers of any kinds (so including things like personal accounts), plus iCloud or things like that (I’m not an expert in informatics), etc... AND able to determine what constitues as the target meme, as well as all the references made to it on the Internet through any sort of medium (if you want to delete THAT part of the meme, too), AND FINALLY you have delete the modified versions of the meme (‘cuz I’ve heard a meme gets modified a lot as it’s reused by other people) And you’ll probably need a non-human to man the operation, ‘cuz human nature days “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. So.... yeah, it seems like a dilemma... gut we’re more advanced in one thing than another

    I was all for a "dark universe" but not a "dark (marvel) universe". I want The Wolfman and Dracula, not The Iron Wolfman and Captain Dracula. Making horror movie monsters into action movie monsters is a losing game because action movies usually have big stakes. The Wolfman or Frankenstein's monster are at most a city wide issue and should be treated more subtly.

    I agree, I wanna see a horror cinematic universe, where these monsters...(wait for it)...are Monsters! We don't love these monsters, because we see them as action heroes, we love them for being monsters, creatures we can't help but admire, even though they're trying to kill innocent people. Don't have a plot, where the city or world is at stake, follow the KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid!) Principle, and just have the story be our (likable) human characters in a life or death situation and pray they survive the night with one of these badass monsters.

Nobody installed in our society a consistent and winning strategy, a hard regiment, of training or teaching our aspiring-to-be directors to be as good as Oldboy’s, or Christopher Nolan, or George Lucas, so just don’t think that *everyone* in Hollywood is like such ! I think Dark Universe could have gone quite well if they'd tried to make it more horror based; come away from the action film universes like Marvel and DC and definitely away from the slightly campy black and white films if this one had been a lot darker and cut the establishment of a universe, like Iron Man for Marvel, it could have worked, if they'd introduced a number of monsters and then had a film about containing or subduing them or something in some ways I'm sad they did so poorly because I love the classic monster films but they'd destroyed the essence of them now :/

    I mean,, Imagine Frankenstein depicted in an accurate translation of the original story.. where the creature is an abandoned victim who grows to resent humanity because of the hubris and negligence of his Creator. I think there are enough movie adaptations of all of these monsters, to be honest.. If they changed these stories into a horror series, it’d just feel like the conjuring and we all know how well _that’s_ going nowadays

    I don't even necessarily need horror, as I think the original Mummy nailed its tone: mostly light-hearted action adventure comedy with some small sprinklings of horror mixed in, camp turned way up. It's a crazy movie because it comes off like a 30's adventure serial with 90's special effects, and I love it. I think the sequels tipped the balance on the goofiness, and so aren't as good. Also, you will never be able to convince me that Nathan Drake from Uncharted wasn't at least slightly modelled after Brendan Fraser's archetype (himself modeled after Indiana Jones and other popular adventure stories).

    The movie would have made so much more sense if she had made the deal with an evil god after she'd been caught killing them and been sentenced to mummification alive. Personally, I found it equally dumb that she spends the whole movie trying to tab Tom Cruise with a magic knife in order to achieve her goals, only for Tom to stab himself and that somehow makes him defeat her?

    Unfortunately for them, having a crossover doesn't necessarily make it a "cinematic universe". Marvel is unique in that every single movie sprinkles in elements from other movies (Hawkeye in Thor, Falcon in Ant Man, Stark mentioned in virtually every movie, with a Nick Fury throughline). They actually do it really well. Then you get DC and the Dark Universe, which basically kneecapped themselves in their first movies by taking too much focus off the current story and throwing in future characters to advertise future movies. It's distracting, ESPECIALLY when you already know thanks to tabloids that this is what they're trying to do. I think Universal should've taken the words "cinematic univerise" right out of their vocabulary and just done exactly what you said: make a bunch of monster movies, and have the successful ones cross over with each other in later installments.

Just because he came up with that phrase in MMA doesn't mean nobody before that used Ground and Pound for a fight strategy. (Because people did)

    Instead of spending $125 million trying to make some safe PG-13 action movie with A-list actors and aiming for mass appeal, they would have been better off spending $10 million and just focusing on appealing to a niche audience of hardcore horror fans. Sure, it wouldn't have made _Avengers_ money, but it would have at least broke even and with enough profit to justify a sequel, and they might have even sold some merchandise. I mean, these Universal monsters are some of the most recognizable characters in the history of film, so if they would have just stayed true to the spirit of them instead of trying to water them down for the taste of the mass market who already has a dozen superhero movies to choose from every year, they could have turned a profit. Bottom line: if you're going to make a movie with a pre-existing fanbase, _make it for the fans_ and don't just copy what the most popular franchises are doing.

    Also, maybe start off with something a bit more grounded. I get that magic would've been imperative to selling this Dark Universe, but this's a bit too much right out the gate. It almost seems clichéd at this point to advise studios that fail to establish a cinematic universe to do this, but just follow Marvel's example. Marvel knew that they couldn't kick off their universe with, say, Dr. Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy, because magic and cosmic stuff is a little too much for the audience to swallow right away. That's why they started off with a more grounded character; Iron Man. Then, they gradually went weirder and weirder with their concepts, until there was enough weirdness in their universe already established to justify throwing in basically anything. After all, is it really so hard to accept a talking raccoon in space or an actual wizard after we've had Norse gods (who're really just aliens with magic, but whatever) and a gamma irradiated behemoth?

    Yup, especially if they would make each film taking place between the 1800s to 1950s, making each of them a time period piece that forms a historical pattern to an alternate view of history. Though, I would highly encourage making these incidents subtle and isolated, instead of out in the open and having a city or world at stake. Basically, make each film a horror film, that the main characters try to survive their encounter.

    I don't think a shared universe with these iconic characters is a bad thing on its own, but this movie shows that universal won't do anything unique or original. I believe that you can make a concept like the dark universe work, but you need the proper execution and the right people, but universal wasn't interested in finding the talent needed to pull it off, and as a result they have a movie that nobody wanted to see and nobody remembers or cares about.

    Personally, I thought the Dark Universe wasn't a bad idea. Sort of a League of Extraordinary Gentleman setup. If they'd have gotten some really creative and imaginative people to make the movies, or gotten someone with a clear vision to manage the whole affair, it could have really been something great. I had thought all this but then I saw that trailer. You know, THAT trailer. Where they cobbled together footage from the old moves and put dramatic action music over it. Serious, WTF.

    peace is overrated I think a lot of ideas for movies can possibly be decent at least, for me I almost always blame the execution. And that sucks because now no one can make that idea great with their own creative genius because some bimbo torpedoed into a fucking mountainside.

  • @aae3545

    @aae3545

    Exactly. That's even worse because now no one in their right mind would try this. Well, maybe in a few decades when this whole debacle is forgotten Universal might have another crack at it. Then again, they would likely have also forgotten the horrible mistakes they had made. Seriously, think how awesome it could have been. Start of with gothic horror, add elements of the spy thriller, maybe with a bit of the 60s Bond charm. A bit of speculative fiction, how would people react to finding out that magic is real. How would science adapt to this new field. Is it something like Shadowrun, where advanced technology and magic coexist in a world on the constant brink of chaos. You know, I don't think this is a case of good ideas, bad execution. They had no ideas. Like Ralph said, these people were just here for a paycheck. I look over all this speculative crap I just pulled from my arse and I think "No, these cocks did not fail in execution." They could not fail because they had no vision. And that makes it all the more disappointing.

  • @bijanthegr91
    @bijanthegr916 жыл бұрын

    Well, Ralph if this is the end of Hollywood, then this was of their own making. Hollywood feared originality and decided to stick with remakes or overused ideas that will become stagnate, and this is their day of wrecking as punishment. So, if Disney does dominate Hollywood, then they deserve it, personally, I'm getting really sick of seeing the same ideas played out, with nothing interesting to grab my attention. To further add my (possibly unneeded) opinion: The only way a Cinematic universe using these classic horror icons could be effective (if not perfect!) if they actually turned them into remade horror icons. Seriously, instead of trying to be like the MCU, why don't you play them at their own game, create interesting, unique and relatable human characters to combat these monsters (except for the Frankenstein Monster, he should be a good guy, because it suits the character) in a dark horror film that border lines R-rating, and these characters, providing they have their own solo films, had to deal with their own demons, just right off the bat here's my brief ideas for each film: Abe/Mina vs. Dracula, Rick vs. Mummy, George/Abby vs. Gillman, and Ralph vs. Tom, etc. You get it! Make each film of this franchise into a horror story, where the main protagonist/survivor of the film, hell even monsters in some cases if it makes sense, and they end up joining together to face bigger and worse threats. Also, I might be in the Minority, but I would prefer if the films were set in the 1800s-1950s, I just prefer vintage settings, especially if they represent specific time periods of where the original films took place. Oh, and use Jumpscares sparingly (As well as VFX), instead of overloading them to the brim! I'm sick of jumpscares being overused, and music stingers! Let the scene do the scares, instead of adding music! Silence is more thrilling and scary than fucking music stingers! So, in other words, I'm not confident in Blumhouse...Well, here's hoping Disney will make good use of these ideas, I know Universal won't. If you managed to read my article, give yourself a pat on the back, you've earned an A plus! If you were in my Film class (No, I'm not a professor XP), I know this must be a chore to read, especially if you know I agree with you, Ralph. I hope we do get more good films, but I seriously doubt it, still somewhat hopeful. Anyway, I'm happy you continue to post vids and inspire me to be a better filmmaker, thanks a million! Have a good day, and please Tell Macon to fuck off! I don't wanna see his damn jerk off drawings! Oh, and please don't eat Tide pods, man, you're better than this.

    One of the writers for The Mummy has said recently that he knew the Dark Universe was doomed when he attended the first meeting. No one could agree on anything and were all under the assumption that they would make it up as they went along. Because of that, him and the other writers all agreed to make The Mummy over the top because they knew it would be the last.

    Troy Schulz is this a regular thing with kurtzman? The island he and orci wrote was a blatant rip off of clonus: the body horror, which I’d be fine with if they cited their source more openly, but I think he thinks he can rip off B-movie plots like clonus and life force and get away with it! Ugh!

    @@DeepEye1994 at least with that Logan's run (which to be fair I haven't seen, but I've heard the comparisons before) is a well known movie, so I can assume they knew people would realize they were inspired by it, but I know kurtzmen and orci saw clonus, and just ripped it off assuming no one would notice cause it's a 70's b-movie no one remembers. I actually like the island as a movie more than clonus, but filmmakers, if you're inspired by material only a fraction of a percent the audience will have heard of, please just acknowledge it.
