Everything Wrong With The Mummy (1999)

Фильм және анимация

With the new Tom Cruise Mummy movie hitting theaters, we figured it was finally time to go back to the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies and look for sins. So that's what we did! And there were A LOT!
May is Mental Health Month, and even though it's June now, it's still a subject that means a lot to us here at CinemaSins. Yes, it's June now technically, but we are still honoring Mental Health Month for a bit longer.
In fact, we’re partnering with Mental Health America (MHA) to not only to raise awareness of mental health issues - but also to raise a little money, too. We’ve got a brand-new Cinema Sins t-shirt in the shop, and all of the profits from the sale of the shirt will be donated to our friends at MHA.
Click here to check out or purchase the shirt: www.districtlines.com/109796-C...
Thursday: A movie not nearly as much fun as this one.

@@peeko_luxx2873 ChatGPT: No, that statement is not accurate. The dream demons in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series were not created using CGI. The original films primarily relied on practical effects, makeup, and prosthetics to bring Freddy Krueger and his nightmarish world to life. The dream demons, which are entities referenced in the mythology of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, were typically depicted through practical effects, such as puppetry or animatronics, if they were shown on screen at all. CGI was not commonly used for special effects in horror films during the 1980s and early 1990s when the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies were released. While CGI may have been employed in later adaptations or iterations of the franchise, such as remakes or reboots produced after the widespread adoption of CGI in filmmaking, it was not used for the dream demons in the original films.

Ok but you can't call the scene with Beni going through all the major religions a sin, because it makes perfect sense for his cowardly character to practice all the religions so that he is bound to be right with one of them and get into heaven, and Imhotep is being slow to kill him because he is having a "wtf" moment watching Beni. That scene is gold and you can never convince me otherwise.

I love Benni’s Rolodex of gods so much, just the emphasis on him being such a self-serving asshole that he will pretend to be loyal to absolutely anyone if they can serve some purpose to him, pay him, etc, and then at the first sign of trouble will abandon that shit so fast. It’s “I don’t believe in any of these gods but if I pray to ALL of them I’m bound to pick the right one”

Weirdly enough, I rather liked Benni (maybe because I have a soft spot for the actor), even his attitude to religion. Maybe because it is classic religious attitude: you pray and sacrifice to gods, and they protect you, or at least not squash you. You neglect them or make the mistake of comparing your beautiful daughter with the Queen Bee deity, and suddenly what's left of your city is on the bottom of the ocean.

"Some American guy is second in command." The entire purpose of the French Foreign Legion is to recruit and field soldiers who are not French. Given O'Connell's age (and the fact his backstory is not fleshed out) along with the medal bar on his chest, it would be imagined that he joined in early WWI, served with distinction, and by 1923 had earned the rank of Captain (the rank bars on his sleeves). This appears to be roughly a regiment sized unit (300-500 men), which is comparatively small to the fact that the French Foreign Legion was about 40,000 strong at this point in history. So, an American making the rank of Captain and being second in command of a relatively small unit, consisting of primarily foreign nationality soldiers is entirely accurate. The only unrealistic thing here is that the closest French Foreign Legion units in 1923 were in Algeria and Syria.

There enough great lines in this movie to warrant a lot of reversed points. Also that scene with Bennie flashing any and every religious symbol he can find is a fantastic character defining moment. He's not wearing them because he's religious or largely superstitious. Its not like he thought he'd wear these just in case he encountered some demigod. Its just demonstrating that he's a man with no real loyalty or faith, with no dignity or qualms with doing whatever it takes to save himself in the end.

I always thought it was Beni seeing them as potential "get out of jail free" cards, because he's seen others wearing them. As the OP says, despite zero faith or belief, he's still covering all the bases to give him any possible advantage, just in case one of them somehow turns out to be real, or helpful. He's probably got a pouch with thirty master keys in it as well. _"I loved the whole sand wall trick. It was beautiful. Bastard."_

+Dargonhuman There are many movies without Fraser called "The Mummy". The one from 1932, the one from 1959, etc. Brendan Fraser was just an actor who appeared in ONE iteration of the story/movie. Just rewatched The Mummy yesterday. I have a theory on why Imhotep was cursed instead of just killed. Because if he was just killed he could have been resurrected by other means since his soul would've been in the underworld, but by doing this they ensured (or tried to ensure) that no one would be able to bring him back unless they were all killed to prevent it.

And he's nowhere near good actors, like Hopkins, Brando, Freeman, Nicholson, Ledger, Dench, Pacino, Eastwood, Hanks, Streep, Bale, Cranston... etc. Not even close. He's crap, like Brad Pitt, very 1-dimensional with very poor acting range - basically just sort of good looking. But then again, it's your cup of tea, I don't have to drink it. Kitties are pretty pickey about their litter. You have get the right sand and salt (sand does not catch much fluids) and replace it daily, for thousands of years. Riding horses with weapons is more fun. But actually, cats would only have trapped the mummy inside, but not kept any humans outside.

I usually try to avoid doing this, but... Quicksand in the desert is a real thing. Air pockets get stuck under blowing sand dunes and can collapse. That scene is pretty accurate. It's also fitting for his character. An old war vet who has lived out his glory days goes out with one last flair. He becomes part of the desert that has defined a significant part of his life.

If you're referring to the bad movie that is the Tom Cruise mummy movie. That really isn't a remake in regards to the three mummy movies or the original boris karloff mummy movie. It was a movie that was suppose to usher in the dark universe of movies like those of the originals that had crossovers of iconic monster's such as Frankenstein, the wolf man, and Dracula. Unfortunately this movie tom cruise was in was so bad it's unlikely there's going to be a new age of dark universe movies. Seems like there was a first attempt back in 2010 with the wolf man movie.

Stuff like her haggling over Rick's life when he's already dangling was frightfully hilarious; and I still love her drunken attempt to kiss Rick.
