I played Auto Modellista as a teenager at a friend's house, but it took about a decade before I remembered the title of the game. Thank you BlueTag for invoking fond memories of that time ❤❤

@@ShanerTheGrey To be honest, Auto Modellista is a fairly obscure title, especially among younger generations of gamers who didn't grow up playing on the PS2.
I did play it more than 10 years ago on my ps2, thought it was weird, traded it, now want it back.

I rented this game so often, the store owner just straight up give me the game. Good times.
I had this when I was just a preteen and I loved it so much. It’s so nostalgic hearing the announcer shouting out “AUTO MODELLISTA!!!” When you load it up, the music, the art style and menu type, everything was so comfy. I also wish more driving games would take on a more unique art style like this did, I thought NFS Unbound could’ve been so much better if it leaned into the cartoony style of its character models and smoke clouds/effects
Auto Modelista is one of the most beautiful and interesting car games! Unique cell-shaded art style, tons and tons of customization, and so many scenic locations. I absolutely adore it and I'm glad you are making a video on it!
I love Auto Modellista's style, as you said, It could have been made today and still hold up to standards. We need more games that deviate from realism.

I think racing games should only be sim realistic. Some kid in a bmw understeered off the mountain right in front on me trying to drive fast, I slid down the hill to see if he was ok, he was thankfully. I was just trying to keep a conversation going until fire and ems showed up. Anyway I asked he played any racing games and he with replied with Need for speed lol. I really wanted to say if he played gran turismo with a wheel that wouldn’t have happened but I didn’t have the heart to say it.

This game and Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero were my favorite racing games back in the early 2000's.
The Tommykaira ZZII is one of the prettiest and coolest supercars ever made. Like a Japanese McLaren F1 or Saleen S7. The ZZII wasn't at F1 level of performance, and unfortunately never left the prototype phase, but it is very cool.
So many hidden gems that i missed out on.
I remember finding this game at my local game store, i didn't pay attention too much to it but one of the employees recommended it to me, and i ended up getting the European version without knowing, and i had a blast with it especially the garage customization and the car brands, the art style looks great
There is actually a Wii game with a similar art style for the vehicles: GT Pro Series. It feels a bit more low budget then this, but the handling is pretty decent even with motion controls!
Really liked how well the Cell Shading looks and the music on top of it, haven't tried this out personally yet but it looks like a lot of fun to be had here

Such a good game. The garage. The cars. The art style. The driving is annoying but you get used to it. Played this IN 2002 when i was 7.
Tommy Kaira is a bit like RUF, in that they take existing cars and modify them so much they get classed as a new car.
Auto modelista parece ser um jogo que se eu tivesse descoberto na infancia eu teria jogado por muitas horas
You know, its kinda funny because i didn't have so many troubles with the US version because i tuned the suspension of my car to induce much more understeer.
Blue Tag: "Hey..." Me: "👍"
Korea made a free MMORPG called SkidRush (DriftCity in U.S.) with art style ripped straight off of Auto Medellista. A bit grindy like most free MMORPGs, but pretty good storyline and beatable without microtransactions. It was my childhood and looking back, a one of a kind game. There are no CarPGs anymore.
Played this, all midnight clubs, all nfs, and even juiced.
It's the brake discs glowing not the calipers, otherwise you would be probably in more trouble.
@BlooTeg

you're right LOL
I have the US version of the game on Xbox and the physics aren't the only problem, one of the secret cars is the Shelby Cobra and it's laughably OP to the point you can win every race with it. It has a top speed of over 220mph/355kph when fully upgraded and accelerates like mad, and it doesn't care if you're using slick tires during the rain because it'll still stop on a dime and make turns no problem.
i have never played that but it looks like it came in one of those $20 for 3 games pack they did back in they hayday of PS2
If anyone wants to play a racing game with a similar art style, there's one called Inertial Drift that's on Steam. Obviously it's more drift-focused, but the art style of it clearly takes direct inspiration from Auto Modellista.
you're description of the stuck and broke ps2 controller was exactly on point!
I beat the US version of Auto Modellista. Handling Physics are heavily focused on oversteer, but if you got a delicate finger and know when to slow down you can keep the car from getting too squirrley. The Toyota Sports 800 with a Supra 2JZ engine swap was very OP in this game (swaps were unlocked after finishing 1st place in every event in the story mode), even though you can't tune a engine swapped car much it was wicked fast at the start of a race and on any course with a long straight-away. Also, in Japan this version of the game was re-released as Auto Modellista: US-Tuned. Not sure if this was the same for the European version though.
I remember decorating the Garage in Auto Modillisa. It was kind of weird in handling, but it was fun.
I was 17 when this game released, I loved it, it was overshadowed just under a year later though by NFS Underground, then Underground 2 a year later. Those were some great times :)
My biggest gripe with this game are the menus. They are an absolute nightmare to navigate. Otherwise a hidden gem for sure.
Not only did I play it, but I own it for PS2. There is one cool thing you can do with the old, tiny Toyota 600 I think it is called. You can put a big v8 engine in it or a big turbo v6. It make that tiny care ridiculously fast.
now imagine if unbound went for that artstyle

Ah, I have this game! I love it dearly, used to play tons of Auto Modellista as a kid. I'm so glad you made this video!
I have a lot of memories playing this game at a friend's house I really enjoyed it a lot. It's not a bad racing game at all.
I have this game since a kid (EU version, obviously). This is the first review of it that makes it justice and says things like they are, and inclusively speaks about the differences between the US and EU versions. I still play the game from time to time because it runs super stable on emulators, and the GameCube version has better texture filtering than the PS2 version, making it a enhanced graphics version of sorts. Plus, the fact Dolphin can easily take HD texture mods makes the EU GameCube version the best of the all for me.
i WAS PLAYING THIS ON AN EMULATOR MONTHS AGO. Art style is amazing.
I remember playing this as a kid with the US version. I can vaguely remember the controls being weird but I just thought I was bad at the game. The customization of cars and garage kept me entertained, as thats what I remember the most about it. That and the sound track and graphics. Im glad this game isnt forgotten. Hopefully someone can modify the US version to have the controls of the EU version, so we can have the extra content + better controls.
I had no idea Auto Modellista US was so much worse. I remember buying it for XBox because I really liked the artstyle, only to absolutely hate the physics. I'd try again every once in a while when talking with some of my online Euro friends about it, just to think they were crazy for liking such a janky game. I feel so deceived... lol

It would be nice to get american cars in PAL version. And I wish Capcom would make sequel, especially now when they're doing great job with remakes.
I havent watched yet. But its such a coincidence that you post this because ive been looking into buying a copy of it after hearing about it recently lol.
I've actually heard of this game, I tried playing it but I never found an iso to emulate it with.
Surprisingly enough I find that the US version of Auto Modellista is more intriguing to play in large part thanks to the physics. The most common mistake I've seen people do is attempt to drive just like in any other racing game, where you steer the car to keep turning. With US tune, you'll need to slow down to the appropriate speed, then rotate the car towards the direction you wanna exit, then just keep it pointing there. You do not turn in the US version of Auto Modellista: the car turns for you and you tell it where it should be pointing. It's so unlike any racing game I've played, even including rally games where you'd expect this sort of behavior the most. Once you get that trick down, it'll be a real standout. JP/EU release tends to use a more conventional driving model where the car keeps turning as you as you keep adding steering input, but every single game does that. Give me the weird shit every single time. I'd recommend getting a feel for the physics on the oval then try expanding from there. Though sadly my general opinion of Auto Modellista is that it's the equivalent of one of those small rather nice novelty chocolates. The aesthetic and car feel are rather intriguing, but only enough to last like what, an hour or two before it runs out? There really isn't enough of it. Even tuning is a mess there. Because of Capcom's pretty weird design decisions you get racing slicks that are better on every single surface and any of the max speed gear ratios just end up being underwhelming compared to pure max acceleration due to how short the straightaways are.
apparently the Japanese version of this game has tonnes of grip but the EU and USa versin the cars just slide like crazy

I always liked how you pause a bit before starting the vid. Reminds me of the PS2 boot up before the splash screen
So the US version of the game pretty much feels like NFS Most Wanted, the feeling of having a broken analog stick 🤔
What an interesting game! I love the visuals, but it does sound like it needed to better match the physics and AI interactions to how the game looked- I imagine that might have been why it didn’t do so well. As ever, thanks for the upload!
I have no idea how many hours I have in this game when I had my ps2. It was literally the only thing I would play. I didn’t even know there were other versions. And to think I got used to the cars handling like they are on ice I can’t imagine what the other versions feel like . Im definitely gonna find myself a euro copy to play.

i designed houses /garage in Automodelista before i played the Sims 2 😂
Auto Modellista was a great game. One of the first games that allowed you to swap engines and add performance components that actually mattered and changed performance the way they would have in a real car. The cell shading style was a great design choice and made the speed you were going feel real. I think I still have this on my Xbx hard drive and I may just have to fire it up again.
I love how it looks. It looks like a playable anime.
I loved playing Auto Modellista, it’s definitely fun! I have another unique car game you should try! The series is called Choro Q! (Penny racers/ gadget racers in USA/EU). Based off the toy cars made by Takara; who made tomica cars and other toy products. The main games I’d suggest reviewing is Choro Q wonderful and Choro Q HG2 (road trip adventures)! They’re basically rpgs but in a car world.
The graphics always get me. Soooo good
Can't seem to ignore the title 😂. I miss playing this game. I still have the copy, somewhere. The cell shading graphics has almost zero loading times. I hope Capcom revives this game. This is one of my top racing games next to GT2 and Tokyo Extreme racer: Drift2
After beating the American campaign, I can confirm, it IS fun though. I have played both versions, and you can get used to the weird drifting. It is very bad and awkward but... it kinda feels very cool to slide around so much. It is very finnicky and awkward so I dont blame anyone for not giving it a chance. However, the EU version has so much understeer and the handbrake is so punishing it makes driving kinda normal and with the easy AI, the game is just easy.
I've discovered this game a few months ago and didn't know it have 3 versions. I've finished the Garage Mode in a US version and i simply loved the game (but always got the feeling that the handling on cars was a bit weird). Now i def want to try out the EU version of it.

Though only one that stay relevant and competitive with gran turismo is forza motorsports. I do wish capcom one day make a return to this game and make a new one for fun

I love this game. I spent countless hours drifting the corners of akagi hill and rokko hill
this game looks like a fever dream
Huh. I had a great time with the US version. I'm still sad there wasn't a sequel to it.
I had this game. I really wanted to love it. The concepts were pretty damn nice, the anime-style cell-shaded artwork was gorgeous, but... I really didn't enjoy the driving itself. It had so much potential, but failed to deliver exciting racing to me. I mean look at the clip at 3:31 on the video: 227km/h (141mph), and it looks and feels dreadfully slow. That kind of speed on roads where the walls are so close should feel terrifying and yet I felt bored playing it.
Auto Modellista: ETA Prime has entered the chat.
Still have Auto Modellista. I made a car based on Beyond the Grave, from Gun Grave.
A car game I haven't seen since I was a kid. MidTown Madness! You should try it!
Not sure if he plays Japanese games, but there’s a game called c1 gran prix, it’s based on the Tokyo xtreme racer series
Love how he says there isn't much customisation, and you can only really change 2 to three bumpers for every car. But that's literally still better than what you could say for Forza Horizon these days; customisation in those games were a massive let down.
