I think even the under-dark dwellers would die out from just the sun dissapearing. They may not like direct sunlight, but the climate they prefer is supposedly somewhat hot, and without the sun it would get extremely cold. Also important to ask if any joint in their food-chain depends on sunlight more directly, like even vampires would be indirectly dependent on the sun because their prey needs it so survive, but the underdarkk could be so isolated that only the cold would really matter for that

It may come as a surprise to learn that cobras and orangutans have a unique relationship in the wild. While cobras are known for their venomous bites, they actually form a mutually beneficial partnership with orangutans. Orangutans have been observed using sticks to catch cobras, and in return, the cobras' presence helps keep the orangutans safe from predators. This type of symbiotic relationship between seemingly incompatible species is a fascinating example of the intricacies of nature.

In my first Eberron campaign, Dendar was the reason that the Quori were trying to stop the Turning of the Age. She’d burrowed into the heart of the plane as a means to access Eberron’s crystal sphere, and would emerge to consume all reality once the age turned. Sadly, my players were not able to stop this (they actually caused it by accident). However, it is campaign canon that the parents of one of the PCs from my current campaign ultimately saved the world by using Xoriat to travel back in time by several millennia.

Regarding the idea of Dendar actually saving the world from Surtur and the other actors of Ragnarok, as kind of like a hero: I love the thought of Dendar being neither really good nor evil. But just like a presence, an inevitability that just happens. No matter who it might profit in the situation.

  • @Gomjibar

Your idea of Dendar being the 'hero' at the end of Ragnarok and basically causing the whole world to restart reminds me of the one version of the true beginning/form of Asmodeus, with him being a colossal serpent and being responsible for the creation of the world. If your theory is true, then it could be that Dendar is the next Asmodeus in some future universe, or else that time keeps on repeating, so Dendar as we know them now, will be Asmodeus in the future, and Asmodeus was Dendar in the past...

  • @necroarcanistxiii

    @necroarcanistxiii

    2 жыл бұрын

I like the idea. My campaign is similarly based on the recurring theme of history stuck repeating itself, both good and bad, just recycled into a different form. You have a creator who is very Old Testament-tyrannical in wanting to be in control of all creation, and his anti-god parallel who wants to destroy it all, but only because God is using her dreams as the fabric of reality. (AKA, the universe literally runs on nightmare fuel.) Although the universe sees her as absolute evil as she is the Destroyer of All things, if they actually let her kill her brother and get some decent f*king sleep, she would have the power to restore the multiverse to the way it was before God overthrew the cosmos to rebuild it in his image, but not many actually know that truth, and the few that do would rather not be erased, even if their reality as they know it could eventually come back. The players in this situation are people caught up in the battle between the old "heroes" trying to keep reality intact, and the primordial beings wanting to assert control or destroy it all. Ironically though, it's their interference that can break the centuries-old stalemate, for better or worse. Especially now that there's a black water going around glitching people into Lovecraftian Far Realm zombies.

Is there any lore to suggest that the sun in Forgotten Realms is connected to dreams? Either thar it is a dream made manifest, or it's a portal to the realm of dreams, etc. Or maybe even that it naturally banishes nightmares? That might explain why Dendar is so focused on devouring it.

No direct connection to Dendar, other than both being evil, serpentine supergods and filling similar niches on opposite sides of an edition-change retcon. The "Asmodeus = Ahriman the Evil Cosmic Serpent" thing was 2E. It goes that there were two Cosmic Serpents, the source-&-embodiment of all Law in existence before the current multiverse. When they fought over whether heaven or hell should become the center of newborn reality, the good one was wounded so badly she was demoted to setting-neutral LG deity, and drops of her blood became the first couatls. The evil one, borrowing from Dante's Inferno almost to the letter, crashed through the "floor" of reality and the resulting crater is Baator. In this version """""Asmodeus""""" is pure theatrics put on by Ahriman, whose real body is barely alive but slowly healing at the bottom of Nessus. What heals him is eating the souls of people who die without believing in *anything* strongly enough to draw the soul to a normal afterlife, *even based on plane-alignment affinity.* Once he's fully healed, by nutritional value of the Nietzschean "Last Man" apparently, he will remake the multiverse as he likes; "destroy" being a relatively benign term here. AFAIK he is now actually "just" the most powerful Devil and those two functions are filled by the Wall of the Faithless and Dendar absorbing nightmares.

this lore adnd2 according to him Ahriman+Jazirian was a cosmic serpent of order, but also according to him they belonged to the ancient brethren, the ancient brethren included Ahriman+Jazirian, lady of pain and the nameless serpent, the ancient brethren were stronger than anyone else , they were higher than the overgod ao and everyone else, but ahriman + Jazirian during the conflict lost a huge part of their former power and left to heal their wounds, so according to adnd2 the lade of pain and nameless one serpent, the strongest creatures currently known, it was also said that ahriman +Jazirian spread a bunch of lies about themselves and all the plans all the gods and others do not know their true origin, their origin is known by lady of pain and serpent, and according to the lore adnd , no one except themselves and the ancient brethren can give them any kind of challenge,Ahriman+Jazirian are weakened and licking their wounds from their great battle and waiting for the day when they fight again, asmodeus-ahriman consumes the souls of non believers, Ahriman+Jazirian and, lady of pain and the nameless serpent, not the only members of the ancient brethren, those who are known and even those who are known are known to a couple of beings from all existence I personally assume Lady Pain has become a replacement for Ahriman+Jazirian, and the nameless serpent (some people call him mok'slyk, but I can tell he's definitely not called that) his exact targets are unknown, but he's definitely not averse to someone breaking the sigil and opening the infinite spire, and secretly spreading knowledge behind the scenes to individuals through knowledge and so on achieves its goals, without acting with its own hands so according to adnd2 lore - dendar, even tharizdun, atropus, elder elemental eye and others not the biggest threat to cause collapse of all things, but without a doubt they are able to destroy a couple of worlds or plans mb tharizdun mb this guy is probably bigger than the others, but it's impossible to say for sure

As a primordial, which you mentioned are not subject to the same laws or reasoning as the gods, Dendar may be the engine of the cyclical nature of the universe you mentioned. It was focused on the Nordic tribes of the far north like Icewind Dale and the Spine of the World, residing there I had a homebrewed living dragon god that slumbered within deep within the mountains, and she was essentially the last line of defense against the Great Old Ones invasion into the realm, but more specifically Dendar aka Nidhogg. The party was essentially the slumbering dragon goddess' champions and agents tasked with fending off the invading forces of the Great Old Ones, especially in the case of Nidhogg whom the two dragonness' saw each other as rivals.

This may suggest that beings of elemental chaos have an inate instinct to destroy everything that is not themselves. It's possible this very act of conflict defines the primordials as individuals; if the many elements of the universe didn't constantly clash, burn and react with one another, would anything truly exist? What did the first beings of the Upper and Lower planes do before the birth of mortals? They fought against their other, constantly seeking the destruction of one another even when there was none to be judged by them.

If you look deeply into it, Aasmodeus is an even bigger villain, as well as ironically being half-creator of the AD&D multiverse. From his immobile near-dead state, he's been ruler and core physical being as well as power of pretty much the AD&D devils and their 9-layered outer plane. He is healing by eating immortal souls. He's the reason that those who consume souls merely have a temporary boost and are hungry again, the immortal soul eventually bleeds over to Asmodeus for him to finish absorbing. If he ever heals enough to merely move and bursts out carelessly, the multiverse snaps to pieces, starting with the 9 hells. And, to get to his hell-creating near-death state in which he's still a godlike devil, he fell an effective infinite distance at an effectively infinite speed but survived instead of died to form an infinitely large 9-layer outer plane around his body. He pretty much IS the Lawful Evil 9-layer outer plane. I think he'd see any other being aside from the Mt. Celestia denizen and other-half of the multiversal creation as mere nuisances. You are one of KZread's top AD&D sages, so you have to know what I'm talking about, my friend. Aasmodeus probably is pushing for Ragnarök for his own reasons. 😈🤔

It just flies into space and devours the sun whole. It's a lot smaller when we fight it though, and we defeat it using the literal power of bacon. No, I'm not kidding. Bacon is an element in this game, and we use a powerful, elemental bacon artifact to kill the sun eater. This game is wonderfully silly some times.

Or maybe your talking about the part of Dendar that is in the plane of fugue, where anything less than very powerful stop to exist if they wander too far/long and army of evil being could just attack them from behind ? Yeah, i don't think it can be done... Probably would be a good idea to get small groups of powerful being to hinder it or make more things like the door for when Dendar escape tho.

Trying to march an army into the second layer of evil plane would be idiotic, but popping few strong individuals right at the beasts location didn't sound so ludicrous. And yes, evil gods will be much stronger in thei own plane, but really, what do they care. Serpent breaking out means that the creatures that they enjoy subjugating will simply perish. for many this is their own demise, for others end of entertainment, reason to exist etc. Nitthog isn't allied with anyone, he just wants to eat the sun, and from evil gods perspective this would be just forces of good weakening themselves, doeing somethig that might benefit them too. Probably this logic has flaws, I have no ideas how traveling along the world tree would look like, it was just a random thought

The gods simply aren’t that powerful. The Blood War is pretty much the only reason the prime material plane and basically all the planes can exist, because demons and devils so greatly outnumber and out-power the celestial forces that if they weren’t fighting each other they’d slaughter everything. I forget her name but that Angel who fell and is now an archdemon basically learned that the hard way when she tried to lead an attack on the 9 hells and got massacred, and for as powerful as demons and devils appear to be it’s also lore that Asmodeus could win it at any time but chooses to maintain the balance to disguise his true nature and continue to heal.

@@plagueofjoe Asmodeus needs the war so he can get more souls from the prime, true, but it seems strange to me that forces of good and evil are so severly outbalanced. Shouldn’t the universe keep some sort of equilibrium, so that even if demons and devils stopped killing themselves actively some sort of thin balance would emerge between good between good evil? Even if Asmodeus would beat the Tenari, good creatures would be much stronger on plains of their alingment, and good or neutral gods are venerated in much greater number on earth, so they would have greater agency at stopping a massive invasion. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that impending doom would make people belive more thus empowering gods. And we are talking about exerting influence directly from Ygdrassil, second layer of Hades is far from Blood Wars, and from main Demon/Devil armies. Even if after one such venture the place would become guarded, hindering World Serpent is worth it even if you do it slightly or just once

That's a tall order. Outside of Asmodeus (him as Ahriman), Ahriman (as a distinct entity), Dendar, Tharizdun, the Demons (inclusive), and a few other deities that desire the end of the world and/or multiverse, I don't know all of the players. But I guess this question could be approached from two angles: the first is raw and situational power against each other, which mostly comes down to narrative arguments once you throw the ties that currently bind them out the door; the second is based on motivations, and I think that's where we might be able to pin down an easier answer. At least if we know the ultimate goals of all parties involved, who allies, etc... But it seems like we don't have that info on all of them. All that being said, I think that laying out a set of assumptions at the top of a video to get rid of any ambiguities, there's plenty of information available to do both videos. But it would be a massive undertaking that would leave no stone in every setting unturned.

Maybe more of them, like a parent with children and by stopping this cycle the current universe slowly weakens and when it dies that is the end of all creation. No rebirth. Of course anyone in a cycle of a particular universe would never want to die, or wouldn't know that the cycle is needed, or just wants to keep their power. And remember, victors write the history. So as Dendar was defeated, of course she would be written as a villian.

I kinda wanna run a game some day that crosses over all of these doomsday prophecies. My first thought would be to make it that stories like that of Nidhogg were correct, that the world will end some day, but to make so that the most important detail is HOW it ends. All of these apocalyptic forces trying to be the first one to the finish line so to speak, but regardless of who is struggling for the end, everyone is on a timer. For you see, the one that manages to end the world will be the one to bring a new future, a new world, into existence. And if no one can get it done on time it will simply end with no remnants of the original to bring into the new world. Thats were our "heroes" come in. The players stumble upon a forbidden knowledge meant only for the highest gods and those linked to the prophecy of the end. They realize their fate and set out to be the ones to "End the World". And they are way behind schedule.
