i think i noticed one flaw, if they see benefitting their god as a benefit to the community or to themselfs, won't that eliminate the benefit, paradoxically. See that is the thing about magical deals and contracts, like the covenant with a god, you have to be very anal about it, HAVE TO BE, *each* *word* will affect the world in a very tangible way, isn't it? So if you leave a loophole any loophole, it will be exploited, or make the contract fail or backfire. Hang on, how long they've being doing this? and that deity is nowhere NEAR awekening?

I see having Snake People as needing options for whom they identify with cosmologically so who they worship and act like is a choice rather than "well toppling civilization is only option I have because my creators made me this way." Ambivalent creator, multiple contrasting preservers, and a destroyer are good archetypes when filling out a niche or sphere of influence to keep shoe-horning. Coutl in d&d are angelic, nearly divine, and Naga are usually fiendish or spiritually fierce, having them both as like angels or ancient spirits that guide the race in service to their particular old serpent gives variety. Quetzecoutl in mythology is more capricious than we give credit, and Jormungdr isn't a Saint, but neither are as reviled as Apep, and even Apep is just doing what they're cosmologically supposed to. I see yuanti, and all other fantasy races, as having theologically complex doctrines, that don't fit the Good/evil/law/chaos dichotomy but instead fit specific dichotomies valued by that sphere and niche. Yuan-Ti are the perfect villainous race. So easy to set up for low and mid level play, and create some really interesting and gruesome plots! Also, I love the description of the Black Broth. Its ingredients make it both fantastical and realistic. Nice stuff!
Some years ago I watched your Skyrim vids but for a couple of weeks now I have been watching your D&D stuff even though I don't play the game. The lore is interesting and you narrate it well so keep up the good work
Here's a quest hook idea: a group of Yuan-ti are orchestrating trouble in such a way to get a party of adventurers in conflict with an Anathema without directly sending one towards the other. This way the adventures can get rid of the Anathema without the Yuan-ti being directly involved in this heresy.
All I’ve realised from these videos is that the Yuan-Ti were heavily inspired by Dune’s Shai-Hulud and the God-Emperor Leto.

I'd like your explanation. In what ways are they similar?
@Gothic_Analogue
Жыл бұрын
@@bayoubilly5176 perhaps my use of the word “heavily” is far too hyperbolic. But the similarities are in the process of humans wanting to reach the form of the Shai-Hulud, the use of narcotics made to further such transformations (Spice), and that the Yuan-Ti abominations are most likely to be leaders in the society similar to Leto and I think the spice-melange did something with pre-borns (could be misremembering). The Fremen also started worshipping the Shai-Hulud like Yuan-Ti humanoids worshipped their serpentine gods. I’m seeing a lot of parallels, and Frank Herbert wrote Dune in 65, Messiah in 69, Children of in 76, and God Emperor in 81. Kind of predates the conception of the Yuan-Ti, so I’m seeing some flavouring of the Shai-Hulud and Fremen society in the Yuan-Ti.

I noticed you haven't mentioned the 3.5 edition lore book,Serpent Kingdoms. That source book goes into great detail about the poisons Yuan ti produce.

17:48 I remember reading about that in an old fantasy book in a library when I was 5 but it was a small dragon instead art depicted it chasing after someone on a bike with its hoop maneuver XD
I have a Yuan-ti character on a game i'm currently playing, princess called "Neshtiria Mamibaam Acanthophis" that is a child of two abominations, but she was born as a pure blood, and despite making any sort of ritual and ingesting any type of potion and venom and asking all gods for help never could change her appearance, so she was chased away by force when her sister tried to take away the right of control of the city and now she is travelling with a adventure group plotting how she'll go back to take back what she lost, while hating the snake gods for abandoning her. She is my favourite character and with each video you make the depth on her lore grows more and more and i thank you so much for that.
Your content is always so solid. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Also, THANK YOU MrRhexx for the World of Greyhawk shout-out. I realize that world might not be your jam, but as an older player I got my start in D&D in that world and I truly have a soft spot for it. It's worth taking a second look at.

Orochimaru would fit in nicely. Except harming snakes part.
Been counting the days for this to come out!!!! thanks again Rhexx
Great video as always! I love this series on Yuan-Ti which are one of my favorite races in D&D.
In the setting I run all we have are purebloods right now. The black broth is a finite substance made from a long dead gods blood, and the yuan-ti are used as slaves by a faction of wizards. Abominatios and more are on the way in the coming years. What was neat about the stuff though was it effected other races than humans. Out in the badlands there was a clan of orcs that got wiped out by the other clans, and while the players don't exactly know why there where hints that they where using the broth in warrior rituals, and producing snake orc monstrosities to conquer the badlands. So the other clans banded together to bring the hammer down on that problem before it got out of hand, and that's what wound up forming the dark tides empire, in the badlands. Yuan-ti are a nice spice to toss into any setting. The Conanic feel of them is loads of fun.
Yuan Ti have always been my favorite race since discovering them
Yaun-ti:ruin entire civilizations Mean while Drukhari :looks like they mimic a faction of owr power.

Yuan-Ti have long been a favorite of mine. I developed a whole campaign around them, that started with a humble encounter with a few lowly Lizard-Folk when the party were fledgling adventurers. It is one of my favorites (and the players had fun too! 😁)
Mostly commenting just to help MrRhexx with the algorithm, but I’ve got a bit of relevant lore from my homebrew setting to share: Tsahkmalid is a deity native to the realm of Tzihornya, and one of the most powerful therein, they are a reptilian god, whose domains include both that of all reptilian life, snakes especially, but also the sun, heat, light, and life energy, with some multiversal travelers theorizing them to be the mutated Tzihornyan manifestation of Palor. Being a lawful deity, whose creeds and doctrines range from good, to neutral, with the destruction of evil being highest among all their tenets, but one who also holds to a veneration of reptilian life, it is said that Tsahkmalid changed not only the societies of sapient reptilian life on Tzihornya through their practices and teachings, but also their very biology through their divine magics, having physically altered their psychology, allowing them to more easily experience human-like emotions, in order for them to better serve as bringers and messengers of Tsahkmalid’s will, the Yuan-Ti in particular acting as their favored servants. While the many changes brought about by Tsahkmalid have allowed Yuan-Ti to largely co-exist with other sapient races, as well reclaim much of their former glory, the other races still largely view the Yuan-Ti with suspicion and mistrust, as, while most have sworn their lives to Tsahkmalid, some still secretly venerate the old serpent gods of the Yuan-Ti, and while both such worship, and the blood-sacrificing of sapient lives, have been outlawed by the modern Yuan-Ti’s Tsahkmalidian society, the production of White-Resin has not, and while most would still view it as an abhorrent act, some even amongst those loyal to Tsahkmalid still cling to the creation of broodguard by the force-feeding of Black-Broth to other sapient beings, seeing it as a way to bolster the ranks of Tsahkmalid’s armies in order to better combat the forces of evil, failing or refusing to see the evil in doing so, or considering it to be a necessary sacrifice for the greater good.
Some of the most lore for a race in all of D&D, and they gave it to the snake people. That’s incredible.
