Dungeons and Dragons Lore : Bebilith and Pale Night

Let's take a tour ride to the Abyss and the 600th layer, home of the Beast Lands, Baphomet, the Castle of Bone and the lair of Pale Night, mother of demons, creator of the Bebilith, enigmatic architect of the tanar'ri 'species' and enemy of the D&D universe.

In 3.5 you didn't get a willsave to resist madness when you saw her true form. You got a Fortitude save for your body failing to process what it saw so it never reaches your mind. If it DOES reach your mind, you just die. Flat out, instant death.

Ok that's actually a really interesting/ FU save. "make a DC 30 Fort save." "Nat 20 for 31! Booyah!" "Okay your body is able to handle the horrors that it sees long enough for that horror to be processed by your brain, where each synapse commits cellular suicide. Your gray matter leaks freely from your head in thick streams of bloody puss. Gimme your character sheet."

An aspect of her that you can meet in _Expedition to the Demonweb Pits_ has a limited version of this ability. Succeeding on the save has the same effect, but failing "just" causes 2d6 Wisdom damage (1 point of which is permanent drain).

Actually fought Grazzt once and got him to half health (I got a hyper buff from a planetar to do it due to being in an extreme holy site.) And on his turn he left but said he will get his mom. A few sessions ago I met his mom. She reduced me to 1 charisma before my turn came up I hit her twice and she respected me enough to use the true form to insta kill me rather then doing the horrific things that happen when you hit 0 charisma from a demon. All in all I would rate it a 9/10 of a time since she was not nearly as rude as some of the other demon lords i met.

@@sagesheahan6732 Pale Night is notoriously polite. Which tends to shock players who have experience with demons. If you manage to get to the Abyssal layer she lives on, and get past the infinite maze of Baphomet, and act nonhostile, she may let you live, or kill you quickly. If you act hostile, she'll kill you painfully and slowly.

@10:20 I caught that. Oh God. Your videos are always so good (I only just found them), but It's odd you left *out* some of the spookier details for this one. How creatures damaged by her touch can be reduced to incorporeal versions of themselves, wrapped in a shroud like hers and held in stasis forever and how she intentionally keeps these victims floating in her palace, like her own personal gallery of macabre art. How one of her combat tactics is simply to suppress the effect that hides her true form for a moment, and forcibly subject anyone fighting her to the understanding of what she really is. How in the fiendish codex from 3.5 the effect of failing the save isn't that spectacular ruinous madness you described but just outright death; the mind actually understanding what it sees and just *ceasing to function completely*. (Also I'd love to know where that description of madness came from. The only thing I can think of that's similar is the way *devils* see the world all the time, but being able to force that onto a character is awesome). And just, other people noted it in the comments, and I said it in another one, but in a species made entirely of Lovecraftian horrors she is the *most* terrible of all of them. She's the King in Yellow and the Black Goat with a Thousand Young and more, all at once, all wrapped together in what might be the very first 'Mother' in the D&D multiverse. That's the kind of understanding that leaves someone never quite the same. Again, great video like always.

The "fallen attackers are forcibly used as a defensive force" thing is also in the story "Maze of the Enchanter" written by Clark Ashton Smith in 1932. A powerful enchanter picks a woman from the tribes to go with him to his palace as a sort of tribute. This woman happens to have a smart and athletic man attempting her rescue from the enchanter. As the man makes his way through a maze at the front of the palace, he is attacked by mutant gorillas. Later, he understands they aren't mutant gorillas at all. They are actually the mutated humans of tribesmen who tried to rescue their own women. Slightly different concept, but pretty close in general.

Another great video (glitch insert horror) 😏 Question! Could you help elaborate on the differences of Pale Night and Queen of Chaos since both are the mother of demons. Plus what is there relationship like beyond that they both are Oberynth.

I wonder of these are just the "demons" that Iggwilv skipped, when writing her legendary book, or else why isn't she justa hagard, drooling nutjob, somewhere? And I get she's powerful; she could resist the taint of Graz'zt, and even turn it back on him some, while he wad fathering a child from her body, but some of this seems more mind-shattering than others, so i wonder if even she said "I don't need to know EVERTYTHING!" I guess I wasn't aware that that was the origins of the bebilith, and while I haven't started them for 5e, I do have some lingering in Lolth's domain, and since my own headcanon doesn't allow gods to pack with warlocks; they can grant real power to clerics, and a better grip on that soul, I have Her use her most ancient bebiliths to pact with Drow arachnomancers. I guess now I'm uncertain if the Spider Queen; a deity and once Demon Lord, Herself, could command these great abysmal arachnids, but I think I'll stick with She can, at least in my verse.

Seriously, the descriptions just sound like 1) They're from the Far Realm which is a section of their former universe. 2) The Far Realm is actually something outside normal time, formed and actually whats left of their former universe in the future when it truly ceases and all that remains is endless madness and temporal havoc.
