Learn how a deficiency in this essential trace mineral could be the missing link in hypertension.
0:00 Introduction: The most overlooked cause of hypertension
0:25 Essential hypertension
1:05 Hypertension and zinc deficiency
1:41 Zinc deficiency symptoms
2:53 Hypertension treatment and zinc
3:29 Zinc function
4:25 What causes a zinc deficiency?
4:50 Best sources of zinc
Around 90% of all hypertension is essential hypertension, which means it has no known cause.
Southern states have the highest risk of hypertension and the highest risk of strokes. They also have a much higher rate of zinc-deficient soils.
Doctors are often hyper-focused on reducing sodium to lower blood pressure, and people are surprised to find their blood pressure does not go down after reducing their salt intake.
If you’re deficient in zinc, your sense of taste and smell is often inhibited. This might cause you to add more salt to your food and crave junk food. The average American indeed consumes too much sodium from junk food and not enough potassium, but zinc deficiency is also a significant issue.
ACE 2 inhibitors are the number one blood pressure medication. This type of medication depletes zinc, potentially causing more blood pressure problems. Diuretics, antibiotics, antacids, and birth control pills also deplete zinc.
Zinc is a helper mineral for making nitric oxide, a vasodilator that helps relax the blood vessels. Zinc is required for nitric oxide to work. Zinc is also necessary to make certain antioxidants, including SOD, which helps to keep inflammation at bay.
You can become deficient in zinc by consuming food grown in zinc-deficient soils or if you don’t consume shellfish and red meat. Sugar, refined carbs, whole grains, alcohol, and fructose deplete zinc. Weak stomach acid interferes with mineral absorption, which can contribute to a zinc deficiency.
Oysters and other shellfish, as well as red meat, are the best sources of zinc.

I had just turned 46 and I’m menopausal, dealing with the list of my husband; I went for my physical abd my dr was adamant about prescribing me meds for the high blood pressure. I told him that I usually fast and will walk more. Especially every day, walking with my teen daughter to school. He literally told me to get used to taking meds because as we age, everyone will need meds. That turned me TF off. I went to get my vitamin d and iron prescription, which I rather purchase myself, there was a prescription for 5mg of hbd meds. I refuse to take it!!! I bought a blood pressure monitor cup, monitor my sodium intake( it’s LITERALLY IN EVERYTHING) and walk and drink water, as well as my vitamin regimen and this has helped a ton. I clearly see that these doctors, ignore, gaslight and talk to patients in a very condescending manner. They’re not to be trusted!!!

Note that this is not limited to Copper. Dr. Berg always recommends adding "ALL trace minerals" and taking them on and off when treating just one trace mineral deficiency. So for example, if you have a boron deficiency you should take extra doses of Boron x2-3 its DV + an all-encompassing Trace Mineral Complex daily for two weeks, then get off for the next two weeks, and take it again for another two weeks etc.

Correct, but not in ALL cases like an active infection. During an active infection you can literally take upwards of 250mg of zinc per day because your body is using it to fight the infection. During COVID I was recommending 250MG of zinc citrate, 2700mg NAC, and 20mg Zyrtec daily and 90% of people felt better within 3 days and tested negative within 7 days. This was a 5 day protocol and works every time regardless of underlying medical issues. There is a reason this combo works, but too much to explain here....BTW, I've trained in functional medicine for over a decade with nearly 30 years in healthcare.

I'm in my mid 40's and work outside almost every day so I probably get more sun than I need. Over the last year or so I've started incorporating more nuts (pecan, walnut, cashew) regularly into my diet hoping to get more magnesium and my bp has dropped to 110/80 or less. Hi Dr. Berg, Thank you so much for your knowledge and inspiration. I am currently on a prolonged fast (13 day’s and counting). I feel so much healthier and clear in my head. Also lost a lot of weight, wich makes me so happy. Feeling really proud, selfconfident and intelligent . After fasting i’m switching to the Keto diet, wich is really new to me. So excited! If i had known decades ago about this diet, i had switched a long time ago. My head is full of recipes and other plans. For example: i started to grow my own herbs and veggies. Planning to store them in winter time. And plans to grow veggies in the winter. Also switched completely to organic food, wich i order direct at local farms. So now i get a whole cow, chickens etc. Also the fish is caught in the wild. Looking forward to eat these delicious foods!! I’m planning to give my garden a mediterranean inspiration. So i want to get a fig tree, and eat some fresh figs. I’ve noticed that the figs are a bit high in fructose but have a good dose of potassium amongst other minerals etc. So my question is: does this fruit (fresh) fit in a Keto diet? Much love, Miranda. Last couple of years from your KZread posting on the benefits of Keto seemed attractive. Of course in the end it's my responsibility to accept your advice or not. I believe Keto diet was detrimental to my Blood Pressure and gratefully I found "Plant Based diet" an excellent substitute and now happily BP has been dramatically reduced to a very healthy level and I feel so much better.

It's more than simply "sugar-free". Many artificial sweeteners damage the gut biome, also some "sweet" in the mouth WILL trigger insulin release via The Cephalic Phase Response. Also chewing will cause the Chewing-Reflex with the bodily response to expecting incoming food to arrive. Drink black coffee, green-tea or water.

Great video once again! I have a question.....with all of these symptoms as they relate to vitamin deficiency, is there an all-encompassing blood test or some other test available to test for ALL vitamin deficiency so we can get an OVER-ALL look at where we are? I swear I've had to ASK my doc each time to test for Vit B12 (which was very low), Vit D (which I found was also extremely low) and was all she would test for. As for Zinc, magnesium, other B vitamins, I have no idea what's going on with me. Is there something we can ask for or purchase for home testing we send to a lab?? thanks Dr. Berg...
