The Most Important Skill Nobody Taught You

Being alone and connecting inwardly is a skill nobody ever teaches us. That’s ironic because it’s more important than most of the ones they do.

Lest we think this is a Hindu teaching, I will point out that is the point of an Ignatian retreat. There is no talking on a Catholic retreat. This practice goes back to the desert fathers of the second century who sought silence by living alone in the desert.

Yes, but take it as a middle step. Some years ago I moved to a different city knowing no one. I had to start meeting people and making friends from 0. I used to hang out with some work colleagues, but it was a group that caused me a bit of shame and not my ideal people. Even so, I was there just to do something and find some connections. I eventually made friends, groups, activities I was interested... So sometimes even being with people with nothing in common, is a little step towards more interesting relationships.

Thank you for this video. Pascal is one of my favorite philosophers and his insights really resonate with me. I experienced firsthand what he meant when I completed my first 10-day silent meditation retreat. No talking. No reading. No music. No cell phones or electronics. No contact with friends or family or the outside world (unless for emergencies only) for 10 days, sitting in meditation, witnessing the breath and the bodily sensations 10 hours/day. This was one of the most profound experiences of my life. It was like a boot camp for learning the self. Your mind won't shut up for the first few days. You're constantly seeking stimulation and excitement. Always thinking. Your legs hurt from all the sitting (despite having stretch/break periods). But you get glimpses. Glimpses of beauty, glimpses of insight and glimpses of the sublime. For a time, my senses became more acute. I could smell flowers from 100 yards away. I could hear different bird songs, and hear different INDIVIDUAL birds of the same species. I became transfixed on the iridescence on a butterfly's wing. One day, it took me one and a half hours to chew one spoonful of food, completely absorbed in the changing tastes and textures of the morsel of food, with barely any other thoughts in my mind. I learned a lot about myself and thought a lot about society. I realized that we are COMPLETELY ADDICTED TO what I call "noisemakers". There's always a TV or a radio or music playing in public. People are always on their phones. Couples on dates are gazing into their phones instead of in each other's eyes. We are always seeking something to do because we FEAR THE NOTHINGNESS OF BORDEM AND WE FEAR LOOKING DEEP WITHIN. We are afraid of what we may find. I cried almost every day thinking about my life during this period. I thought about those I hurt. I thought about those who have left me, including my father who passed away one year prior. We are afraid of our own souls, so we live life as one grand distraction. Oh, and us Introverts aren't off the hook, either. Many of us don't really understand what Pascal meant. Distractions don't just come from without, but also from within. Us introverts often will, if left to our own devices, DISTRACT AND OCCUPY OUR OWN MINDS with various fantasies, reveries, caprices, anxieties, hypotheticals, compulsions, and obsessions, instead of just witnessing and observing without attachment or craving or aversion. There's more to be said, but suffice it to say, I had a very valuable experience in solitude and silence learning a particular meditation technique and I think the whole world could benefit if everybody had this experience at least once in their lives.

For any given piece of advice, the exact opposite is going to turn out to be more appropriate for some people. Consider reversing any advice you hear, if it seems to apply to people much different than you. Failing to introspect is what you might consider a "failure mode" for extroverts. Failing to do _anything but_ introspect is the more likely failure mode for introverts. The thing most likely to be the opposite of the advice given in the video, is "get yourself out of your head, direct your attention outwards and start to connect with other people." That's the kind of thing I'm trying to start doing.

It's all related to time and the use we give it. Some philosophers believe time is undervalued, and therefore, wasted on trivialities. But this notion is even greater when you realize that time actually doesn't exist and that you create time by living the moment. These 'moments' or 'life experiences' are what memories are made of, and that's the true meaning of time.

At middle age i decided that I was not satisfied with my life and my direction. I made many huge changes to my daily life and my future preparations too. However; the single most important and beneficial discovery that I made and consequently added to my daily struggle. Was to implement a quiet time for myself each and everyday. I lay down and try to relax. I wouldn't call it a nap for I am in and out of consciousness. I simply try hard to relax and let my mind go where it wants to go. I have tried meditation very early on in my life and I was not quiet enough to allow meditation to work much less take hold. Now at 57 years young my daily meditations as I refer to them are the most important part of my day. I lay down on my bed with my dog by my side. My kitty also comes in and lays with us and we all relax together. I allow my mind to wander and go where it may. I also allow my body to nap/rest/relax; for whatever it needs to occur. I set a certain amount of time each day usually 2 hours but at the very least 1.5 hours. Nothing that I have changed in my new life has woken me up to learn more about myself than my daily meditation sessions. I encourage all of you; especially our youth to do like-wise or similar time spent to allow one self to relax and let your mind do what it wants. This was a fantastic video and I do appreciate that you have shared this was so many. I am pained by the lack of people that truly focus their lives upon BEing all that they can BEcome. Until we all put our maximum attentions to this goal then we will continue to wallow in the mire and stay irrevalent.

On the flip side, and this may be seen as a good thing or a bad thing, people who are constantly switched on and 'connected' can tire you very quickly, so much so that I choose the people I spend time with based on their ability to appreciate and accept any silence without feeling the need to break it. Great video, thanks!

Makes me feel better that I enjoy solitude. Society says it's lonely to be alone. I find it strange some people cannot be alone. I had friends who didn't want to do anything alone and always needed someone there.

I agree. Everytime i am alone, i dont feel alone. I am on introspecting what my purpose is. Being alone make u focus on ur goals much easier. However, u cant slay the dragon everytime and evryday. I need to take a break from these thoughts so i go socialize and have fun and do my favorite hobbies. Life is beautiful and i find that people who can't handle being alone do feel alone and i pity them.

As someone who has delt with a ridiculous amount of loss in the form of death of people I deeply cared about throughout my life, being alone often brings up the feelings of those that I miss, for me, that is the hardest thing to deal with when trying to embrace solitude. I do enjoy solitude because I can remember the memories of those I care about, however the flip side is I also feel the pain I'll just how much I miss them. I guess you could say it's a double-edged sword. Two sides to a coin.

I'm deeply sorry for your losses CurbsideUnderwood. I have to say that out of all these comments yours is the truest I've ever read. I've always been a loaner in the sense that I would only have a few friends and would only communicate with the people I know and trust. However, I find myself spending even more time alone as the people I love have become much more distant. I used to love solitude because it has allowed me to be much more insightful than anyone I have ever known. BUT, what is the point of this insight on life if knowledge seems to only bring sorrow? Now I find myself wanting to connect BACK with society because I see that this insight is useless to me. Knowledge is useless if you don't use it or share it and that's why I think once you have mastered a state of being alone you should use what you have learned and change people's lives. THAT TO ME IS WHAT I THINK TRUE HAPPINESS IS.

You need the opportunity to do this. Physical stability. Assistance gave me that. Before, it was a boring job I chased because my life depended on it. Then it was depending on someone else (that was bad-was conditional and not sustainable). I think bad stories in the news are just people trying to cope (not bad people, so much, although they can cause things indirectly). We all gotta survive 1st (or you don't get to do the other things). They taught us what they could, for the life they thought we'd have. Or our parents or caregivers couldn't be there for us. Crisis gives clarity but it's not healthy. I guess we have good days or bad days. I liked the previous video and one other (take care).

Being alone in a room is definitely not a good thing. Especially if a room is of inadequate size, furniture placing, daylight access etc. Being in nature alone in other hand, is completely different stuff. Because if you don't have enough sensory stimulants, like in quiet room, this is a good path to depression and madness. So get yourself big spacious room with fireplace, big windows with nice view, maybe aquarium. And a pet that is sitting beside you.

I have hidden in the coop with my chickens, in the barn with my horse, crawled around on the floor of my house, etc to hide from unexpected company. I've spent my entire adult life trying to spend as much time alone as possible. My problem with it is getting other people to cooperate & let me be alone.

From my own experiences "alone" has been a hallmark of my life. Not by choice, but by circumstance and feelings of comfort. I'm considered quite creative and have survived without too much financial distress although I have been homeless on occasion. I have patents to my name and have made a living off several mechanical and chemical innovations. I don't have much of an education. I can state that ALL of my formulations and mechanical ideas have come in times when I am alone with my thoughts for extended periods. I liken this phenomenon to the cycling fraternity. I have a cousin who stayed with us for a while who was a racing cyclist. He was pretty average racing in a bunch to a point where a winner crosses the line first. He excelled however during what was known as "Time trials." This is where the cyclists are set off singly, minutes between starts and the winner is the one with the quickest time to the finish line. You cycle entirely on your own and race against the clock. Relationships are difficult for me so I have one friend who I see maybe once a year if we are lucky. We don't talk on these occasions much, simply enjoy each others company. I am considered anything from weird to insane. I will have it no other way. I have experienced huge amounts of serious trauma of differing types in my life from day one. I know of no one personally who could have endured what I have without succumbing to life. I have only heard of such folk. I don't consider myself good or bad, weird or normal, just different. I have been attracted to ladies in my life but never had the skills to make a successful relationship out of them. I am not gay. I am not criminally inclined and vigorously defend the underdog or down trodden whenever they cross my path. One such event got me into major trouble. I don't do these things for recognition or thanks. I have no expectations of the many times I have helped someone who has stumbled by the wayside of life. On most of these countless occasions I have been bitten in any case. It's OK. Socially I am awkward and my lips seem to have a mind of their own. I get passionate about things and can focus for long periods. My latest focus is the child trafficking going on in the World that absolutely disgusts and shatters me to my core. Paradoxically I have been told people are attracted to me and warm to me easily. People tell me I am calm and collected and above averagely capable. Inwardly I feel exceptionally anxious. I like ocasional gatherings of a dozen or so folk but for short periods only. During these occasions I can usually be found under a tree or on a seat, on my own. Small talk I find especially annoying. Television is offensive to me. Mainstream news misinforms me but I am not uninformed. I consider myself to be lazy though people tell me I`m super unlazy. I have several interests such as aviation ( Pilot), martial arts ( Practise), music (Piano - drums), dancing (Tap my passion), science, technology, psychology, writing and a few more, though I am not particularly good at at any of them except have been vigorously, by many folk, urged to follow one in particular. Well I have gotten that off of my chest. Blessings to everyone!

I’ve always enjoyed sitting in a somewhat dark room and just look out the window or my hands or the ant on the ground I’m often accused of being depressed but I actually feel really good if I’m given the chance to do it without being harassed Then afterwards I will feel good about being around people and noise and light I think I’ve had time to process my thoughts and have learned in my early 30s that facing my fears is scary but then I feel freedom There’s no sense in carrying the weight of suppression I then decide if I’m ready to pursue working on the fearful topic or if it’s too much and I put it aside and think that perhaps in a month I can revisit it Even that helps me to sort things out

Most people are just shallow oceans, when I am alone with my thoughts I am not overcome with my own profundity, I am tormented by just how simple I truly am, a mere collection of purposeless desires and self interest. I spent a few years working alone, with a great deal of time of just me and my thoughts and if anything all I got for my trouble was some eroded social skills and I became marginally better at writing.

This is one of the most ironic topics anyone could discuss. Being alone can be a blessing and a curse. If you can't handle being alone, you need to work on improving yourself, yet if you're drawn to isolation, than you probably have to work more on social skills.

I couldn't agree more with the message that is being put forth in this video. Every person is born with an internal guidance system (IGS) that is completely unencumbered. It is isolated from the "noise" of the material world. From it's vantage point, it is able to perceive events across time as being simultaneous, whereas, the bulk of a person's attention is buried and/or consumed by the noise of the world. IGS; aka, intuition, gut, higher-self, spirit guide, ESP, Holy Spirit and many more labels, is constantly attempting to inform the person in a manner that will serve the person's best interests. The person, while they might believe they know what's in their best interests, really don't have a clue (field of perception is just too narrow). When one can develop the ability to comfortably exist in a state of stillness and quiet away from the distractions of the world, they create a circumstance whereby they can actually hear their IGS. Usually not so much as a voice in their head, but more an experience of thoughts bubbling up into their conscious awareness. The IGS is not something that is separate from the person, indeed, it is very much a part of the person. Unfortunately, though, the IGS is masked over by the plethora of distractions generated in the world so the person never has the opportunity to get to know a very important part of who they are. For me, my favorite time for solitude, stillness and quiet is early in the morning an hour or two before daybreak. I sit alone in the quiet darkness of my living room nurturing a cup of hot coffee and join with my IGS. Over the years I've developed a strong enough rapport and trusting relationship with my IGS that, even when the noise of the world is blaring, I can still hear my IGS and follow its guidance.
