Stop Wasting Energy On These 3 Undeniable Energy Wasters

Energy and attention are a finite resource. They run out easily.
Energy and attention are directly funded by the amount of sleep and rest an individual gets, both of which are notoriously thin in today’s world.
This is why most people will never be successful; most people’s lives are set up to drain energy and attention.

As long as those things you throw in these buckets aren't your kids. What may feel like your life's purpose will get lost in the ledger of your legacy if you fail to hold your offspring's well-being (not the size of their bedroom, amount of crap they own, or trips they take) tantamount to the sum of your other pursuits. Seriously, if you're concerned about your legacy, you may want to consider the people most likely to write you obit and eulogy.

Time Stamps: Say 'No' to: 1. Multitasking - Does not work. It makes you less efficient. Focus intensively on 1 or 2 tasks at a time (80/20 Rule) - 1:20 2. "Good" Opportunities - Only consider to apply scare resources, i.e. time, to GREAT opportunities (+ROI) - 3:08 3. Relations with the 'Wrong' People - End useless/tiring relationships with people out of your inner circle who do not contribute anything positive - 5:01

#2 can become a problem if you have no long term plan to focus on. Therefore, missing great opporunities because of missing good opportunities that will actually yield great opportunities (for people who doesn't know what to do with their life yet). The greatest things in life come unexpected. If you are too focus on your goal, you end up losing some great opportunities as well. Just a train of thought for discussion. Great video though!

My stream of thoughts exactly : opportunities can't really be differencied into great/good or even bad when you come upon them. You cannot connect the dots looking forward, only looking backward !

You can connect dots looking forward, it's called planning! However, every plan is made to be broken, so after you execute on your next plan step watch for circumstances that may lead to changing the plan for the better.

I think one can allow oneself other projects as long as they don't take too much time of your main ones... And as long as one can give all projects full attention when one is on them. When projects need to overlap something is going wrong. I just think focusing too much can narrow your perspective.

"Legacies" are largely pointless. Unless you're Nicola Tesla or something, most people fizzle from memory within a few generations. Just live a life that makes you happy and brings you peace.

And before him we only really remember people like Christopher Columbus, someone who found an entirely different continent for people to live on. Honestly it's just about living and being happy, if a legacy makes you happy then fine, if it doesn't then don't worry about it.

I think it extends a bit differently than this though. You may not be specifically remembered or acknowledged for it, but making a significant enough impact on people could change how they live their lives, stating with your own life, and compound, reaching down generations. Though you may not be remembered as the person who helped a kid be good or live a fulfilling life in 100+ years, you can certainly make some level of impact that can translate and echo across teachings and interactions between people for much time to come, even if it's relatively smaller impacts on fewer people. Regardless of how hard you work you may achieve a Nicola Tesla-level legacy, but that's not necessarily important. Plus, if you never try, you won't know if you'll ever be a Nicola Tesla. In the end, it's ultimately what you want to come from your life, and either way, you won't care once you're dead.

A legacy is not always about being remembered, lasting legacies are never about the person, they are about the gift you bring others, love acceptance, compassion, or what you give to society, e.g. peace, home computers. Legacy is about starting something that continues to grow after your own death: love for others, not about being remembered.

Lovely content. Still, I would argue that not everyone is focused on creating a legacy, no matter its size. Some people really enjoy discovering more than mastering. So, for those people, they do appear to jump from point to point with no "great" outcome, but that free knowledge and pleasure is basically what they are in the pursuit of.

It’s great to know I’m doing the right thing after watching this. I just started this mindset this year finding out that this works best for me. As an introvert it works for me and makes me happy so I don’t ever feel like I’m missing out on an opportunity. I tried doing that before just taking every opportunity I can and it turned out I didn’t continue everything not because it wasn’t useful but it didn’t help me reach my long term goals for myself. It’s good that I tried for a very short time though because having had that short experience only made me realize that I wasn’t really missing out on anything. I knew those opportunities weren’t for me. As a person who is easily distracted, multi tasking never worked for me. I thought I had to be a multi tasker but it only drained me. I think it only works for errands but for daily self work for improvement, I need a lot concentration. And now I also always say no to almost everything beyond my routine I planned for myself to improve my skills. And I pick wisely when and whom I only give my precious time to, the only people that really matter or those who I’ll really benefit or learn from. And being someone who couldn’t say no, to opportunities not right for me, to friends who call you up whenever they want to but will say no to you when you invite, It’s life changing. Now I don’t ever feel guilty prioritizing myself and what I want for me anymore. When you do this, there will be people/ friends who will start hating you for changing. But stand your ground.

Attention Drag! There's a name for it! Whew... I thought I was going crazy. I experience this when I have to switch from "field mode" to "office mode" in my yardwork business. They are different activities based on different mindsets, and changing the channel back and forth (what I have called it) wears you out. You get the physical drain from the field work, the mental drain from the office work, and a third drain from the channel changing "attention drag."

I agree with most things except for the side projects viewpoint. Being in a podcast could give you more fame, and depending on who you do it with it can even be fun. (and give you more fame!) And there's nothing wrong with giving spare time to a family member, especially if you're getting paid for it. Being effective doesn't have to mean being a robot.

Rasmus Lundqvist Sometimes it does mean being a robot. Many times in fact. We are biological robots. When I've said that people are mechanical to psychologists they agree with me. I became a homeowner by age 24 by not having a personal life. I told my parasitic mother to f off, same with the rest of my family. Robotic diligence is what it has taken for me to rise out of my social economic status.

This is excellent advice, but it depends on the career one has. For example, as a social worker, the more opportunities you take, the more networking you do and the greater the chance for a great opportunity to come my way. As a social worker, I am a brand and I must ensure that more know who I am and how good I am so that when great opportunities arise, I am strongly considered.

The argument around the 2% energy cost (whatever _that_ means) of task switching does not show that multitasking doesn’t work. At best it shows that multitasking is _less efficient_ . That’s good to know, but it’s not always possible to use in practice. Apparently the university is a superb multi-tasker because it often chucks multiple urgent things at us at once!

Teaching people to be selfish.... to be so individualistic and pursue their own goals.... until at the end they end up with so much material possessions.., and yet so distanced from the wholeness, the oneness of community and the need to devote some (significant) amount of time and energy to helping other people. No wonder at the end of such a person's project he/she must have so much stress and insecurity. Because he/she believes happiness is obtained by building high walls around yourself and doing your stuff. Not to say there are a couple of nuggets to take though. Focus is paramount, and negative energy is to be disdained.

THEN where's the "selfish"? Are we all supposed to starve to death in the idiotic attempt to undo all the world's wrongs all at once? OR could it be more feasible to scrutinize a certain particular shortcoming of society, WITH INTENSITY OF FOCUS, and see if there isn't a dynamic means to economically and feasibly fix that one thing... and then move on to another...? Maybe stop talking out your ass just to hear your head (or keyboard) rattle... AND think. ;o)

My point exactly. How many people know how there day is going to unfold.. NONE!! so dont pretend you know what is good and what is bad.. Allot of discernment and experience is required to be able to know the difference..

It seems like nowadays multitasking, signifies that one is very productive. This is a fresh perspective on that.

True! There's also a saying I've heard here on KZread that 80% of your productivity/success is a result of your 20% effort. As we grow as adults, time and energy becomes more finite, as we can do so many things unlike when we're very young or very old. I heard this once on stress management, once you managed your stress, stop entertaining opportunities that could add to it. So what are great opportunities? I guess those are opportunities that make you lose sleep thinking about it or something you have always wanted to do your entire existence.

Point #2 is very situational. Sure, if you already have a good income stream that makes sense, but if you are not in a good financial situation, you need to take on any sort of decent opportunities. Great opportunities might take a long time to materialize

I don’t multi task but being able to multitask varies, some people can do it well. But there are many benefits of focusing one task.

I multitask like crazy. BUT I only do one task at a location (eg. My desk). Chores need to be done, even if it’s putting away *some* laundry, so I’ll do part of a chore. When it’s done, I find something nearby that has to be done, and do that. I don’t use mental energy, since most chores are autopilot tasks, I have a variety of things I’m doing, and get quite a bit done. It’s only when I have to concentrate that I focus on one task at a time. Even then, distractions are useful to act as a break from work.

Thanks for sharing. I think you have stated the obvious. The trick is setting your objectives that will still be useful on completion and some time into the future. For example you might decide to become a petroleum engineer and oil reserves run out. Secondly you have to be able to discern useful fron useless interruptions. For example, when considering the financing of deep sea oil platforms to exploit off shore reserves, you might be undermined by electric cars technologyTo properly determine what to say no to, you need a risk assessment system. So tag on a risk assessment video and this video might have some application

I agree but what if the most important things to you are already too much and stretch your energy too thin to be able to do them effectively? For example, the most important things to me are: relationships with family and close friends, house keeping, career, health & exercise, and spirituality but I feel like I don't have the energy to do even 2 of those things!!!
