I grew up in Cincinnati, live here to this day. Started playing drums in 61. Started playing free shows with different groups on fountain Square. The Isleys would pull up in their caddys get out watch. Talk about being nervous, okelly , Rudy were the coolest guys you could ever meet. They would watch the show and tell you where you needed to improve And they were right every time. They would tell us about the latest tour or record release. They never forget their old friends in the hood trying to make it and they would help were ever they could. Bootsy Collins the same way.

Ernie was my primary influence on guitar before I switched to drums. To this day, when white guitar cats start espousing praise on Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page & then they mention Jimi (Hendrix) in a tag-along fashion, I AM quick to quiz them about Ernie Isley so that the brother & his brothers get the musical respect that is just due. The Isley Brothers were the perfect sonic blend between R&B/Soul, Funk & Rock. Their classic "Fight The Power" was a game changer for me. 🎵🎵🎵

In the Isley Brothers "3+3" era (the 70s), Ernie had a different color Fender Stratocaster on every cover while Marvin did the same with a Fender Jazz Bass. Somehow, it never occurred to the Fender Musical Instrument Company to give the band an instrument endorsement despite the parent company, CBS, distributing the Isley's T-Neck label imprint and LPs!! To this day, no Jimi Hendrix Strat exists!! There's a Clapton, SRV, Beck, and David Gilmore models along with a host of Strats from bands no one has ever heard of, but no Hendrix model? I was told by a company rep once black artist endorsements don't translate into sales. Really?!

The Isley Brothers are musical icons, hands down. Some of their classic hits were redone by other artists and should be considered the grandest of compliments because their music 🎼 has stood the test of time. Plus, The Isley Brothers are one of most sampled artists of all time by hip hop legends in their own right. That’s the impact and influence that The Isleys had on the culture has we know it. during the early 70,s they were experimenting with popular white music like Carol King Seals Croft Jim Croce James Taylor and others. Up until this point it was unheard of. Yet during this period they had challenged the boundaries and or norms of mainstream pop culture with very little acknowledgement...This alone has put them in a unique musical stance unlike any other Brand name artist. Even to this day music Historians that speak of them gloss over this as if this were an accident. This is an example of them not getting their "DUE". Also it was Not Jimmy Hendrix but Jose Feliciano remake of "Light my fire" that inspired Ernest Isley to pick up the Guitar in 1971.

They weren't the only ones doing covers of "white music". This practice goes far back into the 60's when Joe Simon was doing Choking kind. Sam Cooke did Tennessee Waltz, Summer Time and so forth. It goes back even farther. And more importantly, it goes both ways as many popular songs today such as Mustang Sally I Can't Get No Satisfaction were originally hits by black artitst, but white artist redid them and with a larger audience pool as well as making the song where they could dance to it, the songs have been historically been thought of as their original work until it is investigated. Several of Al Green's biggest hits were originals by The Bee Gees, and Kris Kristoferson. Again on the other side, all Linda Ronstandt ever did was cover songs by black artitst to get her hit songs, Rolling Stones etc. It goes on and on and both ways. Isley didn't start this.

Thank you Charles for the correction. Likewise did Luther Vandross biggest hits done by other artist. The Isley Brothers Title Album was called “Given it back” that spoke to the plundering of Black music by white artist. Including themselves. This was an album dedicated to this. Yes I am sure they liked the music yet I as they evolved I am sure they saw a pattern and wanted to let the world know that we can do it to.
