    It is a shame they are not in the rock and roll hall of fame. They were one of the first great female musical groups. I think the rock and roll hall of fame is based on popularity. WBPTV, great video always. 👍

    I think so too. There’s a lot of people who have GREAT catalogs but they are not in, and there’s alot that has small catalogs but ARE in. It’s very confusing I believe it is base on popularity among other things. That’s why I believe we as BLACK people need our own. You can say the R&B HOF but they kinda fall under the same regime as the RnR HOF. Honestly I think the HOF should consider Catalog, Popularity and just Pure Talent

    Not in the R & R Hall of Fame? They weren’t even invited to the Motown 25. It took over 40 years for Please Mr. Postman to become a gold record. You should read their book the Marvelettes: Motown’s Mystery Girl Group. It is sad that they aren’t inducted. It might be business but if Gordy was thinking he would’ve prospered more by promoting all of the girl groups.

    Let me say something motown and berry pushed aside lots of groups who gave them number 1 hits the marvelettes is one of them. And Martha and The Vandellas and let's not forget even though Motown and berry were only focused on the supremes let's remember they were only focused on diana they didn't give a care about Florence or mary so Motown and berry pushed aside a lot of talent because they were only focused on Diana and getting her to a Solo career.

    I strongly advocate what you said. Berry Gordy steamrolled over plenty of artists who were far more talented superior to the Supremes. Berry Gordy placed his emphasis on Diana Ross due to their intimate relationship. He was preparing her for a solo career. He didn't care about the Marvelettes or Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Both groups were far more "naturally talented" than the Supremes. He didn't give a crap about Florence Ballard, whose voice was far more talented to Diana Rosses voice or Mary Wilson either.

    @@Leatherbro Berry Gordy didn't focus on the Supremes just because of his romance with Diana, he was always business first, last and always! Diana didn't rule him, he saw the Supremes could put Motown on the map the way the other groups just couldn't. Diana was ambitious as were all the others at Motown. What Motown said, Diana did! She NEVER showed up to work late, high, drunk or unprepared, didn't get "knocked up", she didn't give half when all was called for, she gave her all at all times, she arrived before everyone, stayed later than most others to learn her craft, she worked damned hard, and didn't fight over the decisions that Motown came to even when she didn't like them. Berry Gordy would NEVER let Diana front the group if Flo was THE better choice, each girl, Barbara, Betty, Florence, Mary and Diana had turns singing lead and had singles released on them and all flopped, until Diana in the lead caught on, she was put up front because her voice stood out in the background, listen to the Supremes doing background vocals for Mary Wells. The Marveletts only had one #1 record. If Motown went even one year WITHOUT a #1 record, the whole thing would have collapsed, so he opted to spend his slim resources on the ones that made the company the most MONEY! Diana, Micheal, Marvin, The Tops, The Temps etc,etc,etc.

  • @fredgillis591

    @fredgillis591

    You are wrong! Florence had so many problems steming from her rape, she couldn't get out of her own way, even Mary Wilson finally told her look just be cool, Diana will be gone soon and we can do whatever we want, Flo got fat, stayed drunk, missed rehearsals and shows and fought with all the producers and Berry until, Mary concluded Flo couldn't be helped and she too agreed Florence Ballard, whom she loved had to go, Florence never stopped loving Diana, but she stayed mad at her for a very long time, Diana understood that and did what she could to help Flo financially when enough time passed, all the others you mentioned had very large drug problems, Martha's was cocaine, alcohol and crack, much the same with Marvin, and some session musicians and many others, he just got tired of fighting these endless battles and dragging what should have been professionals out of clubs and flop houses. Motown had to be protected at any cost, did he make mistakes, you bet! And he owned up to them. Berry also ruled by committee with the group deciding who got what song, etc, although he and very often Smoky made the final decisions. Martha Reeves talked extensively about her drug problems which in my opinion destroyed her voice, so many people at Motown self destructed and were fuming at Diana when HE pulled the plug on them. Diana never interfered with the other girls at Motown making as much progress as they wanted, but they all wanted her to step aside and let them shine in her spot, Ms Ross would NEVER even think such a thing. True winners don't.

But since Motown was an up and coming company, they were willing to be patient and invest in them. On the flip side I don’t think they were getting paid paid for those flops so they were basically working for nothing.

Not a lot of people understand how enormously important groups like the Marvelettes and other Motown groups are in the history of popular music. The musical talent and creativity of these artists and their songwriters and producers was so excellent and so unique that everybody else tried to come up to the same level. They were like a gold standard of excellence. They were a role model of how good you had to be to get to the same level. Just ask the Beatles.

    It was "Please Mr. Postman" and "Beechwood 4-5789" that got me into this group as a kid in the Midwest. I hung in there with them as a fan, but once they started doing songs that were more adult-themed or MOR my interest began waning. I actually think their best single was "Too Many Fish in the Sea". Their most intriguing singles were "I'm Gonna Hold On (Long as I Can)" (classic soul vocals instead of pop; very gospel sounding similar in respects to the take 'em to church style of "Locking Up My Heart") and the Twilight Zone-ish "Destination: Anywhere" (an early songwriting effort of Ashford and Simpson).

Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin were signed to Motown as The Supremes on January 15, 1961. Gladys' group did not sign until July of that same year.

Maybe yes maybe no, It is good that the performance law is allowed only if one of the originals is performing in the group. Personally, I do not want to see other than originals. It appears that numerous laws that negatively affect performers must be updated to benefit the performers now in 2023. The uncertainty of their and their families health leaves them out in the cold and everybody is a human being first. The FAUNT CLAUSE MUST BE ELIMINATED AND MADE ILLEGAL IMMEDIATELY WORLDWIDE.

    It still bothers me that Motown abandoned The Marvellettes, plus Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, to focus on Diana Ross & The Supremes. The added annoyance is that other companies follow this negative pattern. I don't remember this happening to male groups and male solists. IJS.

    That’s just business let me remind you Motown Still was trying to establish themselves in a white own business Business wise you’re gonna keep on bringing in more groups which each You’re going to keep tweak it and tweak it until you can reach the level of success that you’re looking for weather is the Marvelettes to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas to The Supremes or Mav Johnson to Barrett Strong to Marvin Gaye sometimes when people discuss things they think I’m from non business Point of view

    The truth is the Supremes went years without a hit before they got on a roll. Were they being pushed aside? The public buys the records and The Marvelletes turned down " Where did Our Love Go". That was a mistake.

    As far as Motown girl groups go #1 Marvelettes #2 Martha & The Vandellas #3 Supremes #4 Velvelettes #5 Elgins... not really a girl group, but had a female lead singer When you know, you know.

    The Marvelettes equals the screwjob from Berry Gordy & Motown. I saw the UNSUNG episode that this episode is resourced from. Just a tragedy all the way around.😢😢 Although both the Supremes & the Vandellas are in, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame wouldn't let them in. 💔💔🎶🎤🎤🎤🎤🎶
