Bucharest inhabitant here. I can tell you that Ferentari got it's "fame" during the '90s to the mid '00s, back when almost ALL the neighborhoods were more dangerous. Nowadays it's not that dangerous anymore, especially if you go in broad daylight. Sure, it looks like crap and it's full of poor people, addicts, prostitution but the criminals are more reluctant now to attack random people passing through their hood. Also if you don't flex expensive stuff, the chances of getting robbed are very low. Still, I wouldn't venture there on foot after midnight.

I’m an Englishman living in Almaty, and spent time in Odesa, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Bishkek and Moscow…and I can say that’s just how it is. Looks grim and is pretty grim but it’s nothing too ghetto. Just drug addicts and poor people…no proper gang stuff. To be honest I feel more intimidated in my home city of Birmingham in England in the wrong area. The brutalist architecture is foreboding but inside you just have babushkas watching out for your safety lol

As a Romanian born and bread in Bucharest :D - Ferentari is not a suburb, it is a neighborhood. I think there's some political and economy implications. A suburb would be administrated by a local mayors office. Ferentari is administrated by the Bucharest General City Hall and also the 5th District City Hall. The 5 district also administrates one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city - Cotroceni. - 5:49 we have some even older trams (the Tatras) still woring on different lines :D - 7:33 - that long ass tin pipe is either an exterior garbage shoot, or a chimney tower for a restaurant located at the ground floor. If it's a restaurant they are oblidged by law to release the smoke above the building, and not into their windows :) - 10:51 - many of the residents in those buildings are drug users and ex-cons, illiterates, people who have turned their back to the system and the system turned its back to them. They live day to day, doing oddjobs to survive (foraging scrap metal, petty crime and so on) . Unfortunately these people exist in many countries and a city as big as Bucharest will naturally attract them. I hope you enjoyed your time in Bucharest :)

The General City Hall only administrates protected areas (Ferentari is not one of them) and main avenues. I think it lands on District 5 entirely. Everything else is just spot on. Too bad this area got stuck in time, it has been like this since forever.

That place was way worse when apparently it was still not the roughest part! But the amount of garbage, and the lack of metal.. there was a block with no doors and no railing, everything that could be stolen and scrapped, had been. But in terms of safety, it’s still pretty safe if you mind your business. Probably safer than all cities in America 😂 It’s just not pretty

Heyo, I have lived there for most of my life, to be exact in the big block shown at 05:23, for almost 23 years. My parents still do live there. Now, they have let me live in their studio which was bought back in the 90s, when retail prices weren't that crazy, situated in downtown Bucharest. They have kept it hidden it from me, to not let me think I am too much of a privillage, I guess. This studio was used to rent, and by being situated downtown, now they kinda give me a chance to live in much of a better place after I left home, finished school and started working 🙌 I know I am lucky lad, because rent prices/apartament prices in Bucharest have even passed central areas in some cities in Western Europe. Btw minimum salary in Romania is like 350 euros and the average rent in Bucharest is roughly 300 euro, where the average salary is around 800-900 euros. It was so funny seeing you taking 323 bus, because you know, that was my bus like 😂, been taking it all my life from the block to metro station or wherelse. Seen lots of crazy shit in that bus, like people fighting, opening doors while the car was still running, loots of roadmen and vagabonds using bus as a place to sleep for a few hours, avoiding winter's cold... Ferentari is a rough neighbourhood, indeed, but you can also meet interesting and kind people, not only drug addicts, pimps, smugglers, mafia and roadmen 😅 Also, on some streets around the places you walked, you have like crackhouse-crackhouse- 2 miliom euro house- same- crsckhouse. The distribution of wealth is highly unregulated in this neighbourhood and so visible. Even if you kinda missed its atmospheric vibe populated by manele playing out loud, I think you guys have an insight now hehe. Thanks for taking time to say hi to my neighbourhood 😎

Poverty and decay in that particular neighbourhood? For sure Very dangerous? Not really and you can take this from someone born, raised and who lived in Bucharest for 35 years. For 5 years I've been living in Berlin and I can tell you that everytime I'm going to certain areas of the city I have to look over my shoulder and keep a suficient amount of room between myself and other dodgy looking people on the street so that I can avoid any potential stabbing. Also being extra careful not staying too close to the ledge of the subway stations lol. Overall, it's 10x more dangerous here than in any area you can find in Bucharest, Romania or in most of eastern Europe for that matter, where the worst that can happen to you is to get robbed and maybe receive a couple of slaps and even that can be avoided with a bit of street smarts and common sense. Here, in Berlin, you can actually get killed. Don't even get me started on the possibility of a terrorist attack which is 100x higher in any large city in western europe than in eastern europe.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm from Poland living in UK and I only found out that actually Poland is much safer, after I moved out. I never realized that before as the narration of the western media is the oposite. E.g. you don't get to see much poverty or dangerous stuff in the town centres in easter parts of Europe - it's more in the neighbourhoods (with mostly locals living there, bit poor, alkohol, theft etc.) It's the oposite in UK (plus some rough neighbourhoods or streets too).

I live in Bucharest and I know Ferentari s reputation but I never been there. Judging just by the news on tv (not an accurate metric, agree) the place is left just with the reputation as I saw on tv no major crimes committed in there (such as shootings and stuff which are anyway extremely rare in Romania so if it happens will make Breaking News) and as we all noticed, with junkies and poverty.

You’ll find this type of brutalist architecture all over the eastern block of Europe. Some of these places might even not be too bad but they just look gloomy and unsafe. I think you’ll be fine as a tourist, the mafia usually just leaves tourists alone because their business model isn’t robbing tourists but racketeering and all the other traditional criminal forms of generating income. The only place I’ve ever felt unsafe was in Casablanca, Morocco. When you have groups of 10 men following you asking for money, then getting on a bus full of football hooligans, it’s definitely a bit intimidating.

Spanian, commercial television in Australia is missing out on a ratings winner, your interaction with the camera and audience would be ratings gold for a real travel show on Tv. Congratulations on the amazing turn around in your life. You may have caused me to shed a tear when you were reminiscing on the river bank in Switzerland

Brooo same. Underrated moment. I often have it in the back of my mind while watching his videos, how he must feel after making such a crazy turn around in life

Glad you enjoyed it but as most youtubers you chose to visit Ferentari midl of day. The fun part starts in the hot summer evenings when all the boys are out in the street as you cannot stay inside. Anyway good luck and keep up the good work
