As a Belgrader I can assure you that it doesn't take a courage to go to the blocks, it has a reputation of a hood from the turbulent 90s and that is it. Crime rate is as low as in the rest of the city. This part is turning into a business center due to its infrastructure and easy access. By its aesthetics it can remind you of a dangerous hood but it is nothing to compare to similar looking parts of Paris or London. In eastern Europe this is normalized, I mean the blocks were not the places filled with people from lower margin. I now doubt how really dangerous Bucharest was🙂 However, I like the way Spanian does the things and I'm looking forward to upcoming videos

yes I have to agree, this can't really be called a Hood Tour. As under communism the majority of people lived in public housing. So any former communist country Spanian has gone too this is kinder a misnomer and cant be considered Hood or overly dangerous.

Been to Belgrade, Serbians have strong family structure, which means kids aren't running wild in gangs shooting at each other. The infrastructure is crumbling due to political corruption. Otherwise it's safe everywhere.

Bollocks, kids are running wild in gangs more than in any other country in the balkans, literally, not sure for greece, but any other country. Google "narodne patrole", a paramilitary group of youth hunting foreigners, especially brown ones, lgbt and such. Google "delije" and "grobari" football hooligans, organised in literall gangs attacking protesters and political oposition on behalf of the regime, when they are not stabbing each other ofc. Just last evenimg, delije of red star, attacked partizan baskeball fans, not hooligans but ordinary people, even people with children, not football fans, basketball fans - armed with axes, nats and bars, several people admited at urgent care ward in the hospita, so serious injuries - no comment from police. Serbia is completely ridden with crime, google "belivuk" klan, a gang that minced members of the other gang into minced meat in industrial meat grinder and made cevapcici out of them. You are either exteremely insincere, not to say lying thru your teeth or absolutely have no bloody idea what are you talking about.

Serbians are well known for orgamized criminal and criminals. But it is different mode of criminal, not too much gang type and no more on street. They have criminal organisations which going outside country in Europe to make jobs, at home they coming back to spend money. This type of criminal was in all Balkan countries, especially in 80-90's.

What we saw in this video is very depressing and I would not enjoy walking around at night. Maybe there are better parts, but there are people who live right there and they seem to be locked up in their homes in those dilapidated buildings. They probably can’t collect enough money within each building to fix it up. On the other hand, why is the trash all around? It takes a bit of effort to pick it up and that’s it.

I don't know if you're influenced by the hoodies in, for example, Stockholm or Paris, or if you're just creating a bit of drama, but Belgrade blocks can in no way be compared either to the hoods in Stockholm, Paris, or even Scampia in Naples. I guarantee that you can take a walk in Belgrade's blocks at any time of the day, and nothing unpleasant will happen to you because the crime rate is minimal. Just like anywhere else in Serbia. Not only is the crime rate low in these neighborhoods, but they are also becoming very attractive and expensive due to their business and strategic location in city. Below a Serbian hip-hop song where the artist raps about the ghetto in the Blocks, I saw a comment where someone joked about them rapping about the ghetto and a tough life while the price per square meter in the Blocks is rising :D. As for the buildings themselves, compared to European cities and their outskirts, some blocks may look disorderly, but the majority of the individual apartments themselves are in quite good condition. I live in a similar building to the blocks, the apartment is over 90 square meters, and the exterior walls are literally 60cm thick. The building has its own transformer station and a boiler room for heating. The entire complex of buildings in the neighborhood where I live has satellite antennas as well as atomic shelters. Some of this facilities may it's outdated, but some isn't. :) Most people make a mistake, especially those from Russia and around the world when they compare Serbian communist era buildings with Soviet ones. In the vast majority of cases, this is a mistake. Another thing, someone wrote about how the communists built the Blocks and how in some buildings, workers from a specific factory live. That is true and that is what differentiates the outskirts of Paris and Stockholm from the outskirts of Belgrade. In the Blocks, people from various professions really live, from doctors and politicians to ordinary workers. And yes, Serbia is not the most attractive destination for migrants, nor has it ever made an effort to encourage their arrival, which certainly, whether acknowledged or not, has an impact on the security and crime rate of the community. Btw, the Vandal Boys are a fan group of Grobari who support Partizan. The only thing that could have caused you trouble is wearing the jersey of their biggest rival Red Star, In their neighborhood. :)

In addition, they are absolutelly safe, I never met someone who was mugged or anything else. People there are very friendly and will always help, especially a tourist! Most of the inhabitants in them are middle class and up, not a lot of poverty. Just that the buildings are in need of renovation, at least on the outside 😁

Oi Spanian, glad you came to Belgrade. Hope you enjoyed it here. As a fellow guy from Belgrade commented here, New Belgrade is far from its reputation it had in the '90s and '00s. The only thing that remained the same are those "beaten down" buildings. Nowdays, you could have a problem in a Block because you have a Red Star/Partizan jersey/T-shirt etc. or if you are provoking the locals. If you are a normal guy, minding your own buisness nothing will happen to you. In this specific ocassion, you wore a Red Star jersey in a Partizan fans hood, so you could have had a problem there, especially in Blocks 61,62. Whole of New Belgrade was designed and built during the '50s, '60s and '70s for working class people working in factories, government firms and so on. Because the communists moved people from the rural places to cities on mass. If you ask me, those buildings have a certain vibe to them. Many people from abroad come to visit and take photos of those blocks. During the '90s New Belgrade got its reputation because of crime swallowing whole of Serbia, sanctions, poverty, etc. Now, in 2024, New Belgrade is a ok municipality. Maybe you have a couple of blocks that have minor problems here and there, but as a whole its not so dangerous. All those old factories are getting torn down and new modern apartment and buisness complexes are being built on a regular basis, because of New Belgrades location and its vastness. So now you have old socialist housing next to ultra rich apartment complex.

As an Aussie who has been living in Belgrade for 8 years I found this kinda funny and I can see why you'd be so shocked seeing the blokovi for the very first time 😂. The blokovi where you were along the Sava river are hell grim looking and rundown but not all blokovi in New Belgrade are like that. If you go to blocks along the Danube, near Hotel Yugoslavia, and around Stark Arena, they are in better condition. And you've got many new blocks recently built like Block A, West 65, Sun City, YUBC, in New Belgrade that are very modern and well maintained. On the safety side, it's nowhere not as bad as it looks either. For example, I feel safer walking around those blocks you were in at night than walking around at night in the centre of many Western cities I've been to.

Everything depends on how you present it and what you focus on, for example instead of focusing on garages and parking lots, I would have focused on parks, which for example in my block takes up 71% of the entire space. Also, at 9:33, while you were showing graffiti and more garages, you were 50 meters away from the beautiful Sava river and the riverwalk. So luckily, there's material for more videos :)

Throughout eastern Europe a lot of these commie blocks were built to replace the houses that got completely destroyed as a result of WW2. The sheer devastation is indescribable. Serbia was apart of Yugoslavia at the time, separate republic from the USSR. Most of the Eastern block started to develop somewhere between 1920-50, as a result of their late development they had to make do with cheaply made housing projects with low quality cement, no fault of their own. Whilst commie blocks today look ugly, they are apples and oranges to when they were first built, on top of that brutalist architecture was adopted from London and at the time was a new a futuristic aesthetic. Throughout the former Yugoslav republics you will come across brutalist memorials that look like something from a Ridley Scott film.

The entrance and staircase would often be filled with black dust and cobwebs, the windows were almost always shattered. I think they were built shortly after WW2. For some reason, I always felt comfortable visiting my grandmother there and staying for a few weeks. As a kid, I never looked at it twice and just accepted that the lifestyle was so much different compared to Australia. Luckily there are new developers who have moved in with the help of the European Union. They're planning on destroying the old neighbourhood buildings and replacing them all with new apartment blocks. But I still feel sad because I have so many memories of my grandmother's apartment and playing football in the schoolyard.

Im from there and i can tell you its one of the best and most humane areas in Belgrade and my childhood there was great. It used to be bad during the 90s and early 00s because of gangsters and football hooligans but now it's pretty good. The price of a one bedroom apartment there (50m) like the one i grew up in is from 120-150k euros and the average salary in belgrade is about 1k euros so i would definitely live there if i could afford it. The building you pointed out with the staircase is the one i lived in and the staircase is only a fire hazard one and was used once when a coffee shop in the basement burst into flames and my family had to get down using it.

At the time when such apartments were built, the walls were thick and you couldn't hear your neighbors while they were talking like today in new buildings, the facades were made to last for more than ten years and not like today where the facade lasts until all the apartments are sold and then it starts fall away, you had several elevators in one building that the city maintained for free, not like today, if you are lucky enough to have an elevator in the building, then it is guaranteed for a few months and all costs are paid by the tenants, you had stairs that you could use to leave the building in case of danger which were located outside the building and not like today that if the building catches fire the only way to get out is to jump through the window, each apartment had a basement and not like today where no new building even has a common basement, each apartment had its own a garage or a huge parking lot in front and not like today when you have to pay extra for a parking space that is sold illegally...

You have parks and greenery, walking lanes all arround, playgrounds on every corner, terrains for basketball, buildings are a bit devasted over time but still social aspect of this hood and functional aspect is better than most of burbs arround europe which have much bigger density and less greenery. So be realistic, london is full of depressing one floor houses, with no tree in streets, so comparing to those this is like a urban mirracle. And architecture of this is top.

This is very nostalgic for me these types of buildings are very common around the Balkans. Back in the day it would have been a wonderful place to grow up with families and children running around. You can probably still see the communist style parks and playgrounds which would be mostly run down now but they still exist in pockets. When you walk past these buildings the hallways have a distinct scent that every Balkan person would know exactly what I mean by the scent 😅

The area may look a bit rough but for people which live in countries of the former Sovjetunion it's normal to live in these type of houses. Not only it isn't dangerous in these areas but also the appertements themselves are usually pretty nice. In fact even wealthy people such as doctors live in such blocks and they're happy with it. It really just is a different mentallity and being used to it.
