Hi! as someone living around this area. It is renovated and improved since the design from the 60's turned out to be a disaster. And indeed it was very dangerous. Nowadays it is not that bad. Two things. 1. There are only around 800k people living in Amsterdam. In the Bijlmer area where you went live about 25k people in 14k houses. And as massive as these buildings are, believe it or not, the density of that area is lower then average in the Netherlands, so it is really not crowded at all. 2. You walk a lot on the bike path mate!

Look i just hate it when people go to the BHijlmer and show the absolute worst, ive lived here my whole life and i have never seen a fight i have never seen like gangs and such and i have never felt unsafe anywhere in the bijlmer. its so sad that people dont show the cultural capital of amsterdam that it is. the amazing markets and great public transit. even friends of mine still believe that the Bijlmer is a dodgy place even though everyone here is ten times more friendly than anywhere in amsterdam. i have never regretted living here and i feel like people should know that the Bijlmer isnt a "hood" its the pinacle of improving something that was at some point a dodgy place. kind regards -A friendly dude who lives in the Bijlmer now you have an amazing day and come visit the bijlmer sometime!

Imaging being in “the hood” and the most scary moment is walking in peace and quiet. Small housing is common and normal in the small and densely populated Netherlands. IKEA like houses are mostly build after the war and a bit later when there was a big shortage of houses. They are also quire common all over the country.

The spikes and barbed wire at 6:49 are there for graffiti reasons indeed. This was a hotspot for train painters for decades. It has now been equiped with sensors, and most people avoid this spot, hence the spikes are still intact. Previously those would've been destroyed by the painters.

Actually the plane disaster in the Bijlmer was a cargo plane from El Al, it was in '92 and didnt crash right after take-off, it got into problems after take-off but then turned back, ignored flight control instructions and did a sort of huge spiral shape before crashing on 2 appartment buildings.

It had nothing to do with not following flight instructions. The accident was caused by faulty fuse pins (big ass main bolts that connect the engine to the airframe) that became overstressed by and fractured off the plane. Engine 3 fell away in the incorrect manor it was designed to (it flew to the side rather than falling down and away from the plane) and destroyed engine 4 and a large section of the leading edge on the right wing, thus creating unprecedented amounts of drag on the right wing. As the crew called mayday and went for a turn and emergency landing, the standard procedure of slowing down for landing created so little lift and increase of drag on the right wing the plane then fell into an inescapable bank. The pilots did nothing wrong the CVR transmission show nothing but professionalism from the pilots, the blame lies square at the feet of the plane's designer... Boeing. Which they've seemed to have a much longer history with than the current whistle blowers are even alleging.

It’s nice to see you walk around my neighbourhood. The Bijlmer has transformed into a desirable place to live. Two to three decades ago, it wasn't an ideal choice. Today, there’s a different form of crime (at a higher abstract), mostly unrelated to the general citizens, except for some street robberies and burglaries but those happen everywhere, of course. One thing you should keep in mind in to have a happy life in the Bijlmer is to simply mind your own business. Most people are kind but direct and very creative. Nice video, enjoyed it 👍🏼

The end of the line is where a lot of graffiti is going on on the trains that are left for the night. That is why it is fenced of like a jail. The first area where you just got out at Gaasperplas is called Nellestein, and that neighborhood is less worse and more expensive than the other parts of the Bijlmer. The appearance of a hospital ward is correct, because that part IS a hospital ward! The central building is where old people live that need daily care, the building around it is where people need care but less of it or they want to be close if they need it in the (near) future. Nice to see parts of Amsterdam where I grew up, as seen by someone like you. Thanks!

That first neighbourhood, Gaasperdam, is actually a pretty fancy neighbourhood. You may not notice it from outside, but the flats are large and luxurious. The everage dutch person can't afford those. They are also not public housing. Most of the residents own those flats. It is close to a popular body of water that even attracts tourists so that is how the housing there is better then in the rest of the Bijlmer.

I used to live there and I remember that this bizarre quiet in de Bijlmer that you mentioned was creepy indeed. Though I have to counter that things are slightly better during the spring and summer time. That notwithstanding many areas always had this pervasive feeling of dread which kept people (including me) inside which consequently made things worse outside on the streets. Over the decades many housing 'experts' have had their say over how to save the Bijlmer from further decline, a problem many politicians for a long time flatly denied even existed. Ambitious politicians rarely care for those living on the fringes of society. I wish we could have had this video decades ago to show what it really feels like. I think you have captured the atmosphere in de Bijlmer pretty well. It may not look like your classical hood - but living there it often felt like one. A modernist nightmare that is effectively cut off from the city life in Amsterdam. Things may have improved over the years but the overall situation is still bad by Dutch standards. As an afterthought; many of the people I knew who grew up in de Bijlmer didn't consider it a troubled hood. They either adapted to its depressing reality or got out when they could.

I only realised as an adult how rough my childhood neighbourhood was. I had nothing to compare it to at the time. In my second year of high school my parents moved to a completely different part of the country, middle class, safe but I didn't really think about it, I just missed my old home and friends. Now when I remember where I was born and spent the first 11 years or so of my life I see it as it was, rough and full of sketchy behaviour. I remember one evening hanging out with my friends playing in an underpass. Grown man walked by and just punched me to the ground.

Your pronunciation for Kraaiennest was spot on. Also no, you don't always have to press the button to open the metro's doors, it's dependant on the driver, about 70% of the time in Rotterdam (at least when i get on) the doors are opened for you, especially when it's very busy on the metro. As far as trash goes in my own neighborhood, it's quite trashy and we go through stages depending on who lives here and who gets kicked out their homes, we've had rat and mice infestations for years.. :) The thing about the Netherlands is that we really like our nature, most of our places look pretty good regardless of the kinds of people living there. Without saying particularly where i live, i've heard and seen plenty of things where i live, from junkies to gunshots. It's just mostly when people think of bad places or hoods that violence or poverty is instantly a driving force but that doesn't have to be true everywhere, so where i live you're mostly fine walking about both during the day and night time, yet plenty of people get stabbed or shot here, i hear the lifeliner and police helicopters frequently, from 4-5 times a week to potentially multiple times a day.
